Pink Addresses US ‘Popularity Contest’

Published: Saturday 25th Aug 2012 by David

Rising to fame at the turn of the millennium as the poster child for Urban Pop, P!nk surprised many a critic when she made the transition from Pop Princess to Pop Rock riot.

Despite enjoying her first US #1 with ‘Lady Marmalade‘ in 2001, the singer- believe it or not- was unable to match the feat until seven years later with ‘So What’.

Now she has addressed her popularity- or lack of it- in the United States and how touring served to counteract any commercial shortcomings she faced in the market.

Details below…

Speaking to Billboard Magazine she explained:

“I was always on the road in the U.K. and Australia, and things were really great over there. Then I got to come home and be left alone. And you know what? It gave me lot of time to create my show and to become a performer.

I would go on 22-month tours and work my ass off, and it’s been the biggest blessing of my life that now I am a touring artist. It got me out of the popularity contest that music can be sometimes and gave me time to hone my craft as a stage performer.

I’m also grateful, and I got to come back and do the Grammys [in 2010]. That was my ‘A-ha.’

Considering her name has always seemed to enjoy notoriety globally, the idea that P!nk was anything but a ‘star’ in the US may seem a little strange to her fans overseas.

However, in what saw we’d say has worked in her favor, touring as much as she has cemented her status as premium entertainer- enjoying critical accolades many of her contemporaries stay falling short of receiving.

I love her… that picture is so beautiful..

  2. christinastherealtalent August 25, 2012

I love Pink and always rooting for her but I don’t think she’ll be as big this time around as her Funhouse era. She’s got a great personality and funny as s***. I think she’s a young Pat Benetar meets Janis Joplin with a Madonna twist.

Floptina will always live in the shadows of Pink, Britney, and Gaga

    • HauteHottie August 25, 2012

HAHAHA! Get outta here. . . ur retarded if you really think Christina Aguilera is really in the P!nk’s shadow. . . I mean come on now. . . lets get it together. . .

      • Öz Firdevs August 25, 2012

Why you talkin about XTINA now ?? why you thinking about Xtina at a pink post ?? Xtina is always relevant, you see !!! She is the best !

      • all4u1 August 25, 2012

Christina has and always will be on people’s mind….that’s a known fact!

      • Live ur life August 26, 2012

Christina Will never be in pink shadow why do you think Pink always Poke fun at her and britney Cus she a hater

  4. HauteHottie August 25, 2012

In the United States we like artists that come out and stay loyal to their brand and their sound, she came out one way, and then changed her sound a couple of times so people got tired of it. . . NOW she finally chose a sound and kept the sound. . .I don’t know about popularity but I do know that Brand Recognition was her downfall. . .but congrats she finally made it.

    • S****** Blonde August 25, 2012

That’s not true, Madonna has always changed her sounds and looks and well you know she’s Madonna.

      • YouDoRealize… August 25, 2012

But Madonna always kept one thing. Her stand on s**. I’m not even throwing shade.

      • S****** Blonde August 25, 2012

LMAO! but Pink is still the same girl.

      • HauteHottie August 25, 2012

Madonna has always stayed true to her message, and her brand. . . you can always change the image of the brand, but you can’t constantly change the message. . . every other song with P!nk is a change of message so you never know if she is strong and independent, or if she is sad and vulnerable, or if she likes men, or if she likes women. . . Vogue Magazine changes covers every month buts its always fashion. . . God forbid its Auto one month, then Lifestyle, then Fashion the next month. . . no one in the America would be interested. =^_^=

thats not true pink started out as r&b because of her label laface which is an r&b/hip hop label and when you get signed for the first time youre going to do what the record label wants you to because theyre paying for everything and when she got platinum on her first album and got money she then changed to what she really wanted and that was punk pop rock and she hasnt changed since the same happened with mariah carey and xtina ppl like what the record labels create and then when the artist try to be themselves ppl just dont like that and say “well she ‘s acting crazy and i wish she go back yada yada” and thats sad! thats what wrong with music period ppl like products instead of actual human beings and actual change its pretty self explanatory just watch vh1 behind the music and im sure 100% of the time this happens in everyones story. the question is why would you NOT want someone to change if she didnt change then youll definitely be tired of her just like eating somewhere like mcdonalds and never going to someplace else..

  5. POP ROYALTY ( F*** Yo Fav) August 25, 2012

I Like her As a Person more than an artist for obvious Reasons , her Albums/material Always were S***** To me ! Funhouse tho >>>>

and she was the Least to have popularity in the world of Xtina and britney !! she’s underrated , but her material is horrible.
i see her getting better and branding herself 🙂 , go P!nk

    • Öz Firdevs August 25, 2012

    • Back2Business August 25, 2012

& yet you stan for Rihanna…

    • Live ur life August 26, 2012

Pink and rihanna aren’t my fav artist But if you talk bout uninspiring s*** generic pop s** music its Rihanna she is the poster child for that Pink worst selling single will have more relevancy than any ri single besides (umbrella) Pink makes music that’s Fun and with meaning Not a beat and 3 words

  6. B0SS August 25, 2012

Pink will forever be relegated to the background. Glad she’s owning it now.

    • Theman August 25, 2012

Keep playing, that girl in your pic has been relegated to the backround now lol, Pink’s last album outsold it in the states and ww. Sit on that loooool

      • KingBey August 25, 2012

B****, Compare Funhouse to I Am… Sasha Fierce, Because They Came Out Around The Same Time. And IASF Out Sold It. Second, Her e.p. And Two top ten singles. Still Only Went Platinum. Sit The F*** Down.

  7. ajm265 August 25, 2012

Pink is the Monica of pop music. It’s like “I have the talent to be much more than I am but I’m ok with doing just enough to make most of my fans happy. And it’s ok for me to be slept on” some times I wish they would strive to do what their counter parts do to get to the next level. #ohwell she still is one of my favorite pop artist.

    • bobby12 August 25, 2012

‘slept on’ = Over 40 million albums and 70 million singles worldwide, as of January 2012. sleep on me please.

    • Öz Firdevs August 25, 2012

Thats not right ! Pink is getting ready to come back again. She was always very successful, wait she is comin !

  8. S****** Blonde August 25, 2012

I’m a big fan of her music, at the beginning she was Urban but to me she’s at her best when she is a Rock star, her best song to me is “Just like a Pill”, her best albums are “Missundaztood”, “I’m Not Dead” and “Funhouse”, to me she’s a mix between Janis Joplin and Madonna, she said this about Madonna:

“I wanted to do it my way with my career, and I had this arrogant notion that people weren’t just interested in my music but me as a person. That was my bit of arrogance, I guess. That’s something I learned from Madonna. I was a fan right from the first time I heard ‘Holiday’.”

  9. ASAP (As Sincere As Possible) August 25, 2012

Well, that may explain why I went from being a fan to not giving a f*** about her.

During her first 2 albums, back when nobody cared about her existence in the US market, she was cool, hip and unique. When she chose to get more popular in the US and focus on that, she totally lost it. She became another Max Martin girl in exchange for greater success in the States. Her first US #1 was ‘So What’? Not a coincidence.

  10. Benron (King Of The Navy) August 25, 2012

I still most of her interview quotes, she is great. But her new music is boring, too much of the same s*** over and over. She needs to re-invent herself.

  11. Elle Varner fan August 25, 2012

PINK is the best stage performer of her generation. She is the biggest touring act of her generation after GaGa…. yes her tours gross more than Beyonce. I like Beyonce but Pink is a more authentic performer. Her success is well deserved!

    • Live ur life August 26, 2012

Pink is not the best performer she just sings Well and just cus she hang upside down doesn’t maker her the best Beyonce. Gaga etc are far superior to her

      • Uh your wrong September 11, 2012

Umm im pretty sure your wrong mate. P!nk is the best live performer of her generation as said above. No argument about it!

  12. BitchICan’tEvenSpellWelfare August 25, 2012

My favorite Pink song of all time is “Just Like a Pill.” & “Missundaztood” is my favorite album. Though I also love “Can’t Take Me Home.”

“Who Knew” from “Im Not Dead” I also love.

A lot of people ignored “Try This” but “Waiting for Love,” “Save My Life,” and “Humble Neighborhoods” are great.

Her current music, though, I’m not feeling at all. It sounds like it could be sung by anyone.

  13. Vandrea August 25, 2012

There’s not enough consistency with Pink. You never know what “face” she’s gonna wear with her latest album. Her going from R&B to pop/rock to rock to pop to dance, etc., etc. is too jarring to reconcile. It’s one thing to not wanna be confined to a box, it’s another to have multiple personality disorder. Part of how you create and maintain an audience is with consistency. You can’t expect to keep the fans you won over with one type of music by giving them something that is too contrary to what drew them to begin with.

Oh well, I guess that’s just her. That’s why she goes in and out of style every other year.

  14. Kathy August 25, 2012

Is everyone really complaining about about Pink mixing it up, but all of your favorites do the same and more for each album?

    • ADC143 August 25, 2012

They wouldn’t be my favorites if I wasn’t secure in knowing what to expect. My favs can’t come out with a heavy metal album and expect me to still like them.

  15. Miguel August 25, 2012

She’s pretty popular in the States

Her new song was a top 10 hit, and her previous 2 (“Raise Your Glass” & “Perfect”) were top 5 hits on the Hot 100. Plus she’s always performing the major award shows & touring all over…

  16. Ugh August 25, 2012

If you’re not Bey, Rih or Gaga nobody gives a f*** about you. Blame these retarded stans and the BIASED ASS MEDIA *MOB Voice*

  17. Theman August 25, 2012

Pink is very popular, although she likes to play it down. She is a legit artist. She is amazing. Her music is amazing. She’s a worldwide star as well. The point of being an artist is to show growth which is what she does. Staying the same will get an artist nowhere.

  18. YESIDIDBITCH August 25, 2012

    I love pink!

  19. Gigi August 25, 2012

Pink is great. B**** can SING !!!!

  20. LOURDES August 25, 2012

Huh? Pink isn’t popular her in America? But hasn’t she sold millions and millions and millions of records? o__OI

    • BitchICan’tEvenSpellWelfare August 26, 2012

      That’s what I was thinking.

EVERY album that P!nk has released in the United States has gone platinum, including “Missundaztood” which sold 5 million.

I guess they’re comparing her to a Britney & a Christina of the day in terms of popularity but I feel like P!nk is pretty popular here in the states. No comparison to Australia where she is absolutely adored, of course, but still popular.

  21. LOURDES August 25, 2012

Huh? Pink isn’t popular here in America? But hasn’t she sold millions and millions and millions of records? o__OI

  22. commanderofthedancefloor August 26, 2012

i love pink, she is always amazing to me, i can wait for this album, and i just wanted to sa the album cover gives me life.

  23. NICK August 26, 2012

P!nk is talented, but she always tries to shut other people down when she says things like this, as if she is better than the populars…let it be, be creative, do your thing & dont worry about others, everyone has their lane, find yours & run it!!!! if u hot u hot

  24. Mad-On-Her August 27, 2012

I don’t understand – which of her albums flopped in the US? Try This, perhaps, but that flopped everywhere. I get that she’s more popular in the UK and Oz than the US but she’s always still been a major star. She’s the female with the 3rd most top ten hits since 2000 , behind only Rihanna and Beyonce. So she’s had more top ten hits since she launched than Britney, Christina, Mariah, Madonna, Kelly Clarkson, Avril, Shakira and J Lo. That doesn’t sound like a flop to me.

  25. Julian August 28, 2012

She is considered royalty here, in Australia. A deity in the form of P!NK
She’s one of us… The “I’m Not Dead Yet” era enlisted her as an Australian citizen.

  26. Uh your wrong September 11, 2012

Yeah Australia gives P!nk the respect she earns.
Guys really if you want to listen to your auto tuned and fake face Katy Perry, go right ahead but when you go to their live concert, you’ll be disappointed. Pink never disappoints and to all those who say P!nk changes her style of music to often. Katy Perry went from hot and cold (dance), to firework (pop), to some s***** wide awake.
