For all the strides society has made, racial injustice sadly remains a very real reality.
A fact made oh so apparent to a Black taxi driver in Dublin, Ireland this week.
Because what started as a standard pick-up turned into an all-out racist assault.
The shocking video after the jump…
Per the footage, mid-journey the passenger turns to the driver (known only as Sam) and asks: “What’s your favourite position?”
Puzzled, he replied that he doesn’t understand. Things then took a turn for the worse when the enraged passenger branded him a n***er.
Claiming he was a police officer, the ill-willed attacker then attempted to physically strike the driver. Repeatedly.
Thankfully, Sam was able to fend off much of the violence, but was understandably rattled as he drove away. He reported the incident to authorities the next day.
According to The Irish Times, the passenger later presented himself at a police station, where he gave a statement. He was not arrested and it’s not immediately clear whether the footage above had been seen by investigators at the time. Nor is it known what – if any – ramifications there have been now the clip has gone viral.
Nigerian-born Sam, however, is adamant that justice be served.
He said:
“I could be dead. Something terrible could have happened on that night. I have children, I have a wife. What would be there fate?”
As for how he kept his cool, he says he followed his faith and was also trying to be safe:
“I think I just followed the example of Jesus Christ, that is exactly what comes to my mind, I tried to be calm.
All along I was ignoring whatever he says but when he held the steering wheel I cannot allow him to take control… that would be a serious accident.”
He noted that he had experienced verbal abuse on a number of prior occasions.
