Meghan Markle amassed ample support in the aftermath of her and Prince Harry‘s shocking interview with Oprah Winfrey.
And it’s become clear Michelle Obama is one of the many rallying around the Duchess of Sussex with support.
As widely reported, Markle relayed feelings of uneven treatment towards her and her family by both the media and “the firm.” She and her husband Harry made clear they felt said treatment was rooted in racism.
During a press run for her new Netflix chidlren’s show ‘Waffles + Mochi,’ the former First Lady was clear about her alignment with Markle and her empathy for her too.
Her words below…
When asked for thoughts on Markle’s feelings of racism, Obama began by saying:
“I feel like that was heartbreaking to hear that she felt like she was—in her own family. Her own family thought differently of her.”
She continued:
“Race isn’t a new construct in this world for people of color. So, it wasn’t a complete surprise to hear her feelings and to have them articulated.”
Obama concluded:
“The thing that I hope for and the thing I think about is that this first and foremost is a family and I pray for forgiveness and healing for them,” Michelle said, “so that they can use this as a teachable moment for us all.”
