Before Beyonce‘s solo debut hit Pop’s scene in 2003, Ashanti ruled Urban Pop seas alongside ‘Maid in Manhattan’ Jennifer Lopez…a fact oft forgotten by Pop’s ‘less informed’ critics.

This year, twelves years after opening with first week sales of 503,000 units, the ‘Only U‘ singer’s self-titled debut finds itself celebrated with fresh ears following the launch of her latest LP ‘Braveheart’, the topic of discussion during a recent interview with ‘Idolator.’

Why Ashanti continues to be hailed one of R&B’s strongest assets?

Her words below…

Lol. She talking like she had a Whitney Houston Bodygaurd type of success. Girl, Ashanti you was hot wit’ those Elvis Presley side burns for like 2 years. As for making history, didn’t Mariah Carey & Boys Too Men still currently holds the record for the most weeks at number 1.

She had her moment during my high school years tho. Lol. I remember everybody was singing her songs. “Baby, Baby, Baby” was my jam & “Rain On Me”… But now she is a has been. She didn’t not reach legend status nor Icon status so there for she is a has been. She still pretty & rich tho…

Her singing voice is everything now, sad that she’s not getting the right spotlight to showcase it. She’s in my top 5 of R&B female singers of this generation

    • Skyfall April 13, 2014

      I mean top 10

      • metzo April 13, 2014

        What’s your top 10 list?

    • anonymous April 13, 2014

you’re right she was one of my favorites too.

  3. metzo April 13, 2014

I loved her during that ERA! (2002-2004). Her Beyonce and Alicia Keys were on top of their Game in the RnB category! Bey is still holding her own a decade later. #1 Chick in the Game.

SCREAMING!!!!! Lol leave Ashanti alone. She’s trying.

  5. Beyonce ended her April 13, 2014

She scooted in (no pun intended) at the right time. Aaliyah had just passed and bathe industry was searching for a new chick. Her voice was basic, her performances were below average and her music was cute for high school girls. She died along with Ja rule and Irv Gotti. Didn’t def jam buy most of her albums anyway?

  6. oh April 13, 2014

Must suck to have peaked in your first few years. 12 years later, no growth in the music, performances, vocals etc. Mainstream success completely gone and now it’s just nostalgia.
    There’s a lesson here somewhere.
(But kudos to her for being adjacent to relevant and still trying, a lot have completely faded into oblivion)

    • Primo April 13, 2014

Her vocals are 100X better now, I thought she was another janet/britney vocally when she first came out…. Her vocals are soaring now.. but her performance skills still leave something to be desired.

  7. Monstarebel April 13, 2014

I can’t with Ashy knees Ashanti.

  8. Sandra April 13, 2014

she made history? can’t have been that much history when she’s all forgotten now and has no legacy, isn’t a legend or icon and is a flop. but yeah she can keep telling herself she made history. lol
the only reason she even got famous is because queen Aaliyah died

  9. JOHNVIDAL April 13, 2014

    She didn´t make history. Obviously!

  10. Sandra April 13, 2014

How old is she btw? She looks 45

  11. BeYAWNce April 13, 2014

Foolish is a mega hit. I still remember this song peaked #1 for 10 consecutive weeks. (YAWNce could never tho). It will be forever timeless. As for Ashanti, stop clinging to your past honey. Keep it to yourself for nostalgia

  12. Madness April 13, 2014

All I see on this blog is a bunch of beyhive fans and some usual haters. I was never a huge fan but you gotta give props when props is due!!! She made history when she had 3 #1 singles on the charts at the same time!!! Sure it was a decade ago, and Beyoncé still on top of the charts swagger-jackin, but hey it is what it is!!! That Grape Juice knows, what they’re doing when they make these posts. All they gotta do is mention something that Beyoncé does and you b****** swarm to the site!!! It makes me laugh. I am a fan but never a fanatic !!!

    stop living in the past

    • d April 13, 2014

Ironic when people are quick to brag about how long someone has been in the game, or how many records they’ve sold, or how much their tour brings in……..

  14. FutureCIARA April 13, 2014

I like her as an actress, Shes believable! She should continue filming movies

  15. kareem April 13, 2014

    I love you Ashanti

  16. Antonio April 13, 2014

This comment will be taken as hate but oh well. I’m tired of these artists living in the past. You are in 2014. What was hot in 2002 is not hot in 2014; so forget about 2002 and focus on 2014. Yes, certain artists like Ciara, Kelly Rowland, Brandy, Monica and Ashanti were hot in their peak yrs, but they’re music does not appeal to the GP so if they want to remain any once of relevancy, they need to get with the times and make music that’ll appeal the masses and not just gay men and Black women. Release songs the GP will like and keep songs your target audience will love on the albums. Case in point… Ashanti, I Got It could’ve been used simply as an album opener and you should’ve went with Scars as the lead single. Ciara, Body Party could’ve been an album track and something like Livin’ It Up or Overdose could’ve been the lead single. Kelly, KDL and Dirty Laundry were not singles, however Gone, You’ve Changed or This Is Love could’ve been singles and Brandy, Put It Down and Wildest Dreams would’ve worked on Full Moon or Never Say Never but not in 2012 boo boo, so why didn’t you go with something like Without You or No Such Thing as Too Late, songs that would’ve gotten heavy rotation on Urban, Adult Contemporary and Rhythmic radio and could’ve gotten performed at awards shows like Billboard Awards and American Music Awards
