That Grape Juice’s Top 5 Reasons To Watch ‘Empire’

Published: Wednesday 7th Jan 2015 by Sam

Tonight brings with it the much-anticipated premiere of FOX’s new primetime show, ‘Empire’.

Produced by Lee Daniels and led by Oscar nominees Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson, the series is a musical drama aptly centered on the running of a family empire.

Armed with a strong supporting cast, which includes the likes of Naomi Campbell, Raven Symone, and Gabourey Sidibe, the show also benefits from the fact that hitmaker Timbaland signed on to create all of the music featured.

Having watched the first episode ahead of this evening’s debut, we’re super buzzed about what’s to come and here are five reasons why…

It’s An Urban Music TV Show On A Major Network

The success of ‘Scandal’ and ‘How To Get Away With Murder’ are proving that Black talent can (when given the opportunity) lead major network shows to ratings glory.

‘Empire’, with its principally Afro-American cast, reaps the benefits of this and highlights that TV bosses are willing to do away with the archaic “rules” about what can work and instead are committing to the production of more culturally diverse prime-time programming. It’s about time!

It Showcases A Variety Of Character Types

As a freshman show, produced for a mass audience, with much to prove, it was always a given that ‘Empire’ would include a host of familiar character types and storylines. As such, we weren’t surprised to see elements of the mob and hyper-masculinity present, as well as neck-rolling “reads”.

However, in parallel to these are the powerful narratives of a successful Black mogul and the compelling storyline that sees one of his sons (played by Jussie Smollett) dealing with issues surrounding his sexuality.
With the small screen being dominated by stereotypes for so long, ‘Empire’ does a decent job of presenting characters that, in being so layered and multi-dimensional, mirror reality. In that regard, aspects of the show are quite progressive.

It’s Not Ratchet!

In an era where most popular Urban TV centers around shower-rods, table-shaking, and wig snatching, ‘Empire’ is refreshing in that it is quality scripted content.

Don’t get us wrong, we love us some ratchet. Yet, it becomes a problem when that’s the primary representation of a race and culture. Everything needs balance.

We salute FOX for finally doing what’s been long overdue – namely championing an “Urban” show that offers themes that are respectable, relatable, and accessible to the masses.

Taraji P. Henson

We love us some Taraji! Whether she’s tasked with delivering a serious role or serving up the LOL’s, she always makes for a compelling watch. And her turn in ‘Empire’ as mother Cookie Lyon is no different.

For while showcasing her trademark sass, Henson’s character also demonstrates more subdued moments as she tries to bond with her sons…after being in jail for 17 years.

The Overflow Of Gifted New Talent

While anchored by known names, ‘Empire’ introduces the masses to talented newcomers such as Jussie Smollett, Trai Byers, and Bryshere Y. Gray – who all deliver commendable and believable performances.

With such a prominent platform in the show and its parent network, watching them feels like watching the emergence of Urban Hollywood’s next big names.

‘Empire’ airs tonight on FOX at 9pm ET.
