FOX smash ‘Empire’ bulldozed its own ratings record last night.
The hotly anticipated finale saw the show reach electrifying highs, in the process solidifying the first season of the Lee Daniels music drama as one of the most successful in television history.
Details below…
For the tenth week in a row, the Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson led series hit a new viewership high. Yesterday’s penultimate screening was (on average) seen by 16.5 million – up 11% from the 14.9 million that tuned into last week’s episode.
Interestingly, the two-hour/two-episode climax continued the consecutive climb in viewership. For, while 16.5m is the average audience for both episodes, the first instalment was watched by 15.577 million viewers (a season high), while the second hour topped it with 17.5 million.
In the all-important 18-49 adult demo, ‘Empire’ broke another record after registering 6.4 – a 10% rise over last week’s previous season high of 5.8.

Three months.
In the space of just three months, the show has grown into a Pop culture phenomenon and catapulted its stars (many of whom were unknown before) into the stratosphere.
And deservedly so.
Like no show in recent memory, ‘Empire’ has managed to tap into the cultural fabric of the millennial generation and is reaping the rewards accordingly.
Congrats to all involved and bring on season two!
