After a stellar debut season, FOX’s breakaway hit ‘Empire’ wished its inaugural run adieu to the tune of a whopping 17 million viewers.
Only heightening anticipation for its season 2 return, the show’s director – Lee Daniels – announced a slew of new guest stars (Brandy, Alicia Keys, Chris Rock) in addition to increasing its episode load from 12 to 18 for its next-go-round.
Now, fans wondering when they’ll get their first peek at the show’s sophomore run should wonder no more as its premiere date has been officially unveiled (spoilers below):

Season 2 Highlights (as revealed to date):
- Cookie will be busy with two new love interests
- Andre & Rhonda have a baby on the way
- Chris Rock will play a person from the past
- The season will be split into two parts (a la ‘Scandal’) with the first run being 10 episodes and the next being 8

Those spoilers are weak teases. Naturally, they’re keeping the good stuff close to the vest. Over the summer, we’ll learn nothing about the fallout/cover-up of Vernon’s death in Andre’s house or about the coup the landed Lucious in jail. But the timing is perfect. Empire debut right after the Big Brother season finale.
