A five year run atop Nickelodeon’s ratings food chain turned Kenan Thompson & Kel Mitchell into household names via their hit series ‘Kenan & Kel.’
Alas, their road to success led to a place far too dark for Mitchell once the show ended in 2001 and now, fourteen years after their split, he has revealed that he was left feeling suicidal once the final curtains were drawn.
His story below…
The show’s demise left the actor out of work and struggling to find acting gigs because casting directors were unable to look beyond the character he portrayed in it.
I felt like I hit a wall. I was like ‘Okay, I need to figure out what to do in my life.
His problems elevated when the absence of paying performances put his finances in trouble and pushed him towards drugs, alcohol and suicidal thoughts. It didn’t help that his marriage to the other of his two children was also ending and that he was yet to understand just how much losing relatives to gang violence had changed hi,.
Years of despair would seem him find peace after the preacher’s grandson reconnected with God through Christianity.
I was trying to figure it all out on my own, but what I needed to do was turn to Him. Once I found that clarity with Christ, I knew everything would work out.
Today, Kel finds himself on safer ground as the manager of a non-denominational Los Angeles Christian church and motivational speaker as well as serving as the star of the new TV show ‘Game Shakers‘, created by ‘Kenan & Kel’ creative Dan Schneider.
Awww. That’s so sad, but at least he’s doing good now.
Sad. I remember hearing this a while ago. Glad he found that gig on Nickelodeon. If they market it like iCarly he’ll be around for a while.
