In 2002, the Brazilian crime drama ‘City of God‘ impacted theatres six years after the novel it was inspired by was penned and published by Paulo Lins.
This year, Netflix encourages fans of the groundbreaking project to reunite with its cast via ‘Cidade De Deus – 10 Anos Depois.‘
In the project, we learn how the movie changed the way the world viewed Brazil’s issues with crime and racism, the fortunes made by its cast, but how little has changed for those who live in favelas.
Watch its trailer below…
Taking place over the course of over two decades, City of God tells the story of Cidade de Deus (Portuguese for City of God), a lower class quarter west of Rio de Janeiro. The film is told from the viewpoint of a boy named Rocket (Busca pé in Portuguese) who grows up there as a fishmonger’s son, and demonstrates the desperation and violence inherent in the slums. Based on a real story, the movie depicts drug abuse, violent crime, and a boy’s struggle to free himself from the slums’ grasp.

“the fortunes made by its cast” huh??? this line alone makes me curious to see this cause as far as I know the actors are all as broke as they started with the exception maybe of Alice Braga who’s building an US career and Roberta Rodrigues who’s acting in soap operas nowadays
