Retro Rewind: The Spice Girls’ ‘Spice World’

Published: Saturday 10th Dec 2016 by David

As we continue to mourn the death of the superstar, join us as we make our way back to 1997 to celebrate ‘Spice World‘, the movie launched boy the Brit-Pop force The Spice Girls.

Shot to support their album of the same name, the movie sees them walk the line between fact and fiction via a story which seems them take on an evil media juggernaut determined to destroy their reputation.

Built on a budget of $25 million the movie earned $100 million at the box office and helped its parent album debut at #1 on the Official Albums Chart with 192,000 units sold.

Since then, it has sold over 20 million copies worldwide.

More importantly, despite the problematic nature of her “Scary” moniker, the movie saw Melanie B go a long way to fly the flag for under-represented Brits of colour on a global stage.

‘Stylist’ had this to say about the group’s impact:

For generation of women, the Spice Girls flew the flag for sisterhood, female empowerment and feisty independence, showing millions of women and girls that they could do anything they wanted – even if it did involve wearing platform trainers and a crop top. It was a simple, surface take on the movement – accessible rather than academic, and one often accompanied by jokey peace signs, jiggling boobs and plenty of banter. But the message was emphatic – female solidarity and self-belief are powerful beasts and when the two are combined, you can achieve, well, anything you set your mind to.

Do you agree?
