Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature launched to celebrate TV and Film’s glorious past.

Today, we revisit 1999’s ‘Double Platinum‘ which starred Brandy and Diana Ross.

In it, Ross plays a gifted vocalist seeking stardom who abandons her infant daughter to move to New York City. What happens when the daughter (played by Brandy) grows up and meets her idol Olivia King?

Chaos.

For, she has no idea that Olivia and her mother are one and the same.

Watch below…

Brandy’s mother Sonja Norwood acted as one of the movie’s executive-producers via the Norwood Entertainment Group and joined her daughter to watch it become a ratings-rocking success when it impacted ABC on May 16th 1999.

    Poor Brandy,
She used to be the go-to black girl.
But Beyoncé put her career chokehold, then Rihanna came and finished her.

    lol

Not really Beyonce, as brandy’s decline was not the same time as beyonce’s rise. Full moon didn’t sell like never say never, and then she lied about the marriage, which had people not really feeling her anymore.

She’s definitely still around making millions and booked continuously. I wouldn’t ever “poor brandy” a booked multi millionaire

I remember when this movie premiered like it was yesterday. My whole family gathered around the tv to watch it that Sunday night. The movie premiered to 15 million viewers and boosted sales for both Brandy and Diana’s respective albums. Airplay for Almost Doesn’t Count reached the top 10 at radio and had it been released to retail, would’ve been a much bigger hit for Brandy.

I loved this Movie! ! And still do. Brandy discography is definitely legendary status. She’s done so much and has not only impacted us fans but MANY artists in the industry. Yea, soultrain honored her exceptionally well but I think at this point her impact is bigger than her.. I know more is to come… homage wise and music.

I remember growing up watching this movie…watching it again reminds how special brandy tone despite as she got older it grew stronger. I always thought she would have gone the route of continuing acting in movies and dropping albums in between like how Tyrese did

I love Diana Ross. Her song “Missing You” has been on heavy rotation for the past few days in my house. That lady was a true diva. And I’m completely shocked at how she really could sing. I’ve always had it in my mind that Diana couldn’t sing… Chile I’ve been watching all her performances/concerts and she actually could sing, very well. Had e crying on certain performances too.

    • Beyoncé Jackson January 21, 2017

Because she didn’t have a “soulful” churchy voice most people write her off. Diana is a very skilled vocalist and it’s a shame how underrated she is.

      • boi January 21, 2017

Diana is only underrated vocally within a small sector of those who put black singers in the stereotypical box of having to sing “black,” which means you have to sing loud and do all kinds of vocal acrobatics. Most of that small sector of people are normally other blacks who grew up in church and believe that that way of singing is the standard for singing. But, most people in her day, especially mainstream pop listeners, did not underrate her vocal abilities, they revere her vocals and her unique interpretation and delivery of singing.Whitney is the only pop diva with a gospel sound and “black/soulful” styling that was embraced universally as an international Pop icon, like Diana. The rest souful stars with bigger voices, are known or revered as soul icons or stars and aren’t as mainstrean.

I loved this movie! I said it before, Diana surely would’ve been my fav if I was from her time! She’s the first grand diva in my eyes! It was nice to see my Brandy working with so many of her idols!

I just love Bran’s movies! I’m so glad to have had favs that typically made films during their eras (during/ after the release of the music)! When you got the first single, album, performances (during awards season) and on top of all that – a movie! It just didn’t get any better! That’s a good 1.5 – 2 years of nonstop bliss! I was always here for it! “Cinderella”, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Double Platinum” truly remind me of a very special time in Bran’s career … I even stop everything to see Brandy in Tyler Perry’s “Temptation” every time it airs! Sweet Memories! <3
