Retro Rewind: ‘Romeo Must Die (Starring Aaliyah)’

Published: Saturday 4th Feb 2017 by David

Though her short life was stained with pain hidden from her fans, Aaliyah‘s legacy is one which inspires joy in any familiar with the work in music and movies.

Today, in honour of her said work, we dedicate today’s Retro Rewind to her performance in the action-crime thriller ‘Romeo Must Die.’

Grossing $91 million at the box office, the project stood as the star’s big screen endeavour and saw her join Jet Li to tell a story loosely based on the Italian tale ‘Romeo & Juliet.’

Ready to take a journey to the past?

Meet us in the year 2000, below…

The singer was 21 when the movie hit theatres and contributed four songs to its soundtrack which also featured cuts from Destiny’s Child, Chante Moore and Lil Mo as well as Timbaland who produced its stand-out effort ‘Try Again.’

Off topic where’s that post about Kehlani flopping? Why did you delete it? Realised you made a stupid comment about her being more well known than K Michelle. I wrote a reply to that post but when I went to submit the whole topic was removed.

They didn’t say that. They said that She was “seemingly” more well known than K michelle which is why her flopping was a shock. Comprehension is key. They were pointing out that even though Kehlani seems popular K sold more which means all isn’t as it seems. Where did you imbeciles go to school.

Erm how is she seemingly more well known than K Michelle? She isn’t known period. That was what was so dumb. Maybe actually read what I said first before hoping on your high horse acting like you know what you’re talking about.

But how could she be more well known than a reality star who was on love and hip hop Atlanta, don’t they average 4 million views per episode? And she was part of the main cast.

Aaliyah was stunningly beautiful, even more so in person, she literally glowed. My favorite moment of her, was the short but beautifully done “Aaliyah” era, sadly her last, the movie (Queen of the Damned), the music, the looks, visuals, everything was perfect and she looked better than ever, she had such a bright aura, definitely one of a kind.

I remember being excited about the video premiering on MTV’s TRL. Didn’t they also do a “Making the Video” for it?

The film was fun and had a decent soundtrack, but Aaliyah and Jet Li didn’t have much chemistry.

I see that Kehlani post came down real quick lol! That was so disrespectful. As Tyra would say: “Learn from this TGJ!”

Sales don’t mean anything because Aaliyah would open with like sales of 35-50k and still slay

  14. Mark111 February 4, 2017

This was a fun time. I remember we all had celebs crushes, my friends had Britney, Beyonce, Mya, and others while I had Aaliyah. Just a bunch of middle school kids being boys. Lol

Can’t forget that red carpet she made Beyonce look like her maid…. She was unbelievably stunning.
Rip, she would have had a legendary career.

Only because of the rarity of such a coupling in mainstream movies (Asian male lead / Black female lead), I always considered Ninja Assasin with Naomie Harris and Rain to be an updated, international [budget, settings, effects, storyline] reboot of RMD.

    Aaliyah was truly a beauty.

An aside: this movie convinced me to get Jet Li’s ‘Rise to Honor’ video game for PS2 when it came out, and it incorporated [ie ripped off] a lot of scenes from RMD lolololol
