Full story below…
A revival of the cop flick was widely hinted at last year; and now not only is it confirmed but details about its cast, directors, and debut date have been revealed.
Samuel L. Jackson will reprise the title role, one he first took in John Singleton’s initial 2000 update of the 1970s film series.
The veteran will be joined by actor Jessie T. Usher, who will play Shaft’s son. Years of estrangement have separated the familial pair, yet they’ll find themselves teaming up.
Regina Hall, Alexandra Shipp and original Shaft Richard Roundtree will also feature.
Set for release via New Line Cinema on June 14th 2019, the flick will also star rapper Method Man (real name Cliff Smith). He’ll be playing an old friend of Jackson’s character.
Per THR, Tim Story will be directing, while script-writing is being helmed by Kenya Barris and Alex Barnow.

While the initial 70s versions were heavily critiqued for their overt blaxploitation, Jackson’s 2000 turn offered a somewhat less offensive take. Somewhat.
Time will tell what route the reboot go down in the current social climate.
In any case, with the last film having amassed over $100 million on a $46 million budget, it’s safe to say, this revisit will naturally have high commercial expectations.
