Welcome to Retro Rewind, the TGJ original feature designed to celebrate TV and Film’s glorious past and celebrate art from all walks of creative life.
Today, we celebrate the release of ‘Black Girl‘…the 1966 movie about an ambitious Senegalese girl named Gomis who believes she can make a better life for herself in France after she is employed a wealthy woman who asks her to work as a nanny.
Alas, all is not at it seems.
For, the young girl finds herself forced into slavery when she is caught up in a web woven by racism, the after-effects of colonialism and the horrors of years gone by.
Black Girl (1966) is probably the quintessential masterpiece of the area, based in Senegal. https://t.co/7R9H5vLUmx
