Thanks to her controversial comments about the Holocaust, ‘The View’ moderator Whoopi Goldberg has many changing their views on her amid provoked outrage for repeatedly asserting it wasn’t “about race.”
Stated during a segment of the talk show Monday (January 31), Goldberg and co. were addressing how a number of American schools are attempting to remove some of the nation’s more problematic history moments from curricula.
When she referenced the Holocaust, however, Whoopi indicated the genocidal event – which saw an estimated 6 million Jews and 5 million others killed by Nazis – was more of a demonstration of inhumanity than race because it involved “two White groups of people.”
Needless to say, her commentary set off a firestorm of controversy. So much so, she took to Twitter Monday night to apologize.
Backlash quickly ensued after Whoopi’s statement about the Holocaust (as seen above). Among the more notable responses were the U.S. Holocaust Museum and Jonathan Greenblatt, the CEO of the Anti-Defamation League.
“Racism was central to Nazi ideology,” the US Holocaust Museum wrote in a tweet shortly after Goldberg’s comments began circulating. “Jews were not defined by religion, but by race. Nazi racist beliefs fueled genocide and mass murder.”
“No @WhoopiGoldberg, the #Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people — who they deemed to be an inferior race,” he said. “They dehumanized them and used this racist propaganda to justify slaughtering 6 million Jews. Holocaust distortion is dangerous.”
“On today’s show, I said the Holocaust ‘is not about race, but about man’s inhumanity to man.’ I should have said it is about both,” wrote Goldberg on social media Monday. “As Jonathan Greenblatt from the Anti-Defamation League shared, ‘The Holocaust was about the Nazi’s systematic annihilation of the Jewish people — who they deemed to be an inferior race.’ I stand corrected.”

I mean. I’m kinda confused, yes back then Jewish people were NOT considered white. But the fact is, Jewish people ARE white. Their anger seems justifiable considering this happened at time when being Jewish was about race and not religion. But, it’s anger over semantics. Because today you are white. Judaism isn’t hereditary. There are scholarly articles about this topic so argue with your mama not me.
And if you want to argue I ask you. If the holocaust was about race, was the Rwandan genocide also about race? Because that was black on black crime.
I think this whole argument really exposes “race” as an illegitimate social construct that white people use to decide what group of people they want to disenfranchise in any given era.

I watched her Colbert interview and I understand her point of view. I agree with her that the Nazis may have thought of Jews as a whole different race, but it truly wasn’t about that. It was about ethnicity like Whoopi said. It was ethnicity that the Nazis targeted in their laws and propaganda about Jewish people, not race. It’s not hard to understand, but because it’s Whoopi, people want to act different.
