Academy & GRAMMY Award-winning songstress H.E.R. has made no secret of her desire to join the exclusive ranks of stars who have achieved EGOT status – meaning they’ve won at least one EMMY, GRAMMY, OSCAR, and TONY over their careers.
And, if industry excitement is anything to judge by, her opportunity to add the “E” just got pushed full speed ahead thanks to ABC.
See how inside:
In celebration of the 30th anniversary of the release of Disney’s ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ ABC has announced a hybrid special featuring never-before-seen musical performances, brand new sets, and updates takes on costumes inspired by the classic story.
Airing December 15, H.E.R. will portray the animated classic’s leading female character “Belle” in the Hamish Hamilton-directed ABC production (which will also see songs from the original performed in front of a live audience).
Taking to press, the singer-songwriter shared her elation about the announcement.
“I can’t believe I get to be a part of the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ legacy,” H.E.R. said. “The world will see a Black and Filipino Belle! I have always wanted to be a Disney princess, and I get to work with two wonderful directors Hamish Hamilton and my favorite, Jon M. Chu [who will be the executive producer]. It is very surreal and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
Chu echoed the sentiment.
“With her obvious extraordinary talent and stage presence, H.E.R. is the perfect embodiment of our Belle and we are thrilled for audiences to see her in this celebration of creativity,” said Chu. “We were both influenced as storytellers by the original animated movie, so it’s very exciting to collaborate together to honor the artistry of that timeless classic while also inspiring a whole new generation of creators.”
Viewers who miss the live take when it airs on December 15 will be able to stream it on Disney+ starting the next day.
‘Beast’ isn’t the only acting gig the critically acclaimed songstress is attached to. As previously reported, the 25-year-old will make her feature acting debut in the highly anticipated Warner Bros. adaptation of ‘The Color Purple.’

Stay mad whities 🥰💋
Nobody’s mad here, why are you talking sh*t? You’re clearly looking for some confrontation.
“whities” do you have a problem with white color skin people?
Yes. Jealousy.
@Miss Jay Alexander, from the UK, you’re the one who’s going to be mad when it flops. Black-lead movies don’t gross anywhere near as much as white-lead movies.
