‘The Little Mermaid,’ starring Halle Bailey as Ariel, is on track to make an almighty splash at the US box office this Memorial Day Weekend.

Per THR, Disney’s revival of the beloved 1989 film is swimming towards a launch of $125 million – after registering $38 million on its first day in theaters (May 26).
Should the number range hold, it will see ‘The Little Mermaid’s live-action remake arrive with the holidays’ fourth-biggest opening of all time (not adjusted for inflation).
Directed by Rob Marshall, the film – which is receiving rave reviews from critics and theater-goers alike – also stars Jonah Hauer-King, Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, and Awkwafina.

The excellent Previews, her voice and acting is why this movie is doing so well. Not because it’s disney. And Halle will definitely sell come album time because of how much more critically acclaimed her voice is now.

I’m glad Halle got her some shine, but why cant we see her with a black prince too? I’m sick of all this swirl all the time.
This doesn’t have to be about race. Halle wasn’t casted because of race and neither were the other 3 staring roles. This is a racially ambiguous movie, even with the sisters, only 2 are black, 1 Asian, and 3 white. What matters is chemistry and ariel and prince have plenty of that.

Im sure there were auditions for the Prince role too. Id assume that none of the black men who auditioned had the charm of the original prince eric. Highly doubt they were looking for white in particular if any actor could audition.
I think they were going for colorblind like the Brandy Cinderella movie.
$125 million in week one definitely puts TLM on track to gross $700M to $1B as i expected. I really hope it out does its biggest rival ALADDIN which was just OKAY and has no rewatch value at all, it gross a bit less than TLM opening week but still managed $1 Billion.
{The irony is that racism is why these numbers aren’t higher while reverse racism would be why these numbers would probably be just as high if the mermaid was white since the black turn out would be much lower in that reality.}
