The box office performance of ‘Joker: Folie a Deux‘ over the weekend was no joking matter – at least not to execs at Warner Bros. who were undoubtedly stunned to see how critically and commercially panned the set was.
Starring Academy Award winners Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in its leading roles of iconic DC Comics characters The Joker and Harley Quinn, hopes were high for the Todd Phillips-directed film as its predecessor – 2019’s ‘Joker’ – not only swept the succeeding awards season but also laughed its way to over $1 billion in revenue.

Video In-Article Ad (Desktop)Despite an aggressive promotional run that saw its stars engage in quite the media blitz on some of the industry’s biggest outlets, Joker: Folie à Deux’ still opened to $40 million in ticket sales.

Many domestic moviegoers echoed the sentiment with some even taking to social media to bemoan the movie’s plot, musical element, and more.

People aren’t into musicals. That’s why The Color Purple also bombed.
Ehhh it’s depends on what the musical is. The Joker had no business being turned into a musical. It makes no sense. The Color Purple was surrounded by controversy and it was already a legendary film. The Broadway musical has been successful for decades.
There is definitely a place for musicals in the theater. They have to be done right like Hairspray, the Pitch Perfect movies, La La Land, and Wonka. Biggest problem for The Color Purple musical is they were more focused on big name actors instead of the storytelling and other important elements. I was at a test screening watching studio reps go around asking only white people to stay after for a focus group, so the studio didn’t even know their target audience. Problem with Joker 2 is they have a big headed director who largely overestimated the number of fans who would be impressed with his experiment of an already proven formula.
Where’s UHoesFunny at now? I thought it wasn’t gonna flop and I’m a hater? 😆
You were right, the movie was bad
Flop
2 n**-jobs in real life playing 2 n**-jobs. Boring.
The movie really not a bomb at the box office. International gross 81 million. The movie will gross 100 million domestically in due time. If, the Joker movie a bomb at the box office, then Alien movie a bomb at the box office
It’s a 💣 sis born critically and commercially.
Could it be the LADY GAGA Effect?
All I know is the first one did well in the theaters, so it couldn’t be Joaquin Phoenix’s fault entirely.
No you would be wrong. It’s a horrible story with no action that doesn’t make sense at all. All over the place and the music was the worst idea. Messed up the flow and tone of the story. It was everything all around no way can the blame be put on Joaquin.
I never placed blame on Joaquin—I PLACED BLAME & AIM at his Singer/Actress CO-STAR: LGG for the bombing of the movie.
The first 1 was a huge hit so NO BLAME AT ALL ON Joaquin Phoenix.
FLOP!
The movie needs to make 450 million to break even. 🤣 Flop
FLOP
Gaga is doing well. She performed way Better than Bey’s “Austin Powers” that flopped harder than homecoming lol 😂
The movie was not good
Is she finally in her Katy era 🤭
No wonder Lady Gaga seems so mellow and depressed in interviews lately. She knew this s*** was about to be a train wreck. Lets see if her new album flops just like this soundtrack and film did.
