In breaking news, TikTok is officially on the brink of closing in the US after the latest ruling from the US Supreme Court.

Full story below…

For years, the hugely popular social media platform has been subject to much debate in the US, after concerns about its ownership and influence.

A recent ruling established that TikTok would need to close if a buyer for the US side of the business could not be established. Especially in light of it not being particularly clear if said portion of the business was even up for sale.

Contending motions have been made, but ultimately the ban has been upheld.

The ruling reiterated the stance that there is no direct conflict with the First Amendment (as claimed in courter filings). Rather, TikTok being owned by Chinese giant ByteDance and the argued implications of this were deemed central to the matter.

As a result, the law directs ByteDance to sell TikTok by January 19 (this Sunday). Should that not happen by then, web and app stores will be legally banned from making the app available in the US.

President-Elect Donald Trump has suggested that he is making moves to prevent the closure, but in the event he doesn’t, it’s safe to say a new chapter of the digital age will be upon us.

TikTok is one of the most downloaded apps in the world and is used by almost half of the entire US population.
