The first installment of the ‘Wicked‘ film franchise may have already soared into history books thanks to exceeding $680 million at the global box office, but now the Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-led blockbuster is extending its domination to digital streaming platforms.
Already the highest-grossing Broadway musical movie of all time, ‘Wicked’ is on-pace to being the most-streamed film of its ilk after raking in a whopping $70 million in Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) streams in just its first 7 days of availability.
Landing on at-home streamers on December 31, the Jon M. Chu-directed flick reportedly brought in $26 million of that figure on day 1 alone.
For context, that first-week figure is the largest sum Universal Pictures has seen for any theatrical title with a premium release to VOD – setting a record for the legendary film studio.
Over the 40 days ‘Wicked’ was in theaters it raked in $453 million at the domestic box office and $686 million worldwide.
