In a surprise development, Pharrell Williams‘ hotly anticipated movie musical, ‘Golden,’ will not shine on the big screen. For, the film has been scrapped…after being shot.

Eagerly awaited, ‘Golden’ was loosely based on the childhood of Williams and featured an all-star cast including  Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe, Missy Elliott, Quinta Brunson, Anderson .Paak, and Jaboukie Young-White.

However, Variety reports that an impasse between Williams and director Michel Gondry has seen the movie scrapped in its entirety.

Originally set for release on May 5 via Universal Pictures, ‘Golden’ will not be shopped to another distributor and is effectively a wrap.

A joint statement from Williams and Gondry read:

“When all of us got into the editing room we collectively decided there wasn’t a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned. We appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we’re disappointed we can’t deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity again soon.”

Wow.
