Cynthia Erivo continues to have etched her name into history, and this time it’s by way of the Golden Globes.

With the Golden Globes 2026 nominations announced moments ago, the British-Nigerian multihyphenate has become the first Black woman to earn two nominations in the lead actress (comedy or musical) category.

Erivo, who brings Elphaba to life in Jon M. Chu’s blockbuster sequel Wicked: For Good,’ continues to redefine what representation looks like in one of the Globes’ most competitive fields.

Her latest nod follows last year’s recognition for the original ‘Wicked,’ marking a groundbreaking repeat achievement.

The 38-year-old’s game-changing moment comes amidst continued conversation around diversity on the award show circuit.

Indeed, prior to her second nomination, only 12 Black women had ever appeared in the musical/comedy actress lineup, and with just one winner to date: Angela Bassett, honored in 1994 for her iconic turn as Tina Turner in ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It.’

2024 served as the first time more than one Black woman appeared in the category, with Erivo joined by Zendaya for ‘Challengers.’ The award was eventually won by Demi Moore for ‘The Substance.’

Black women previously nominated in the coveted category include legends such as Dorothy Dandridge, Pam Grier, and Beyonce.

The Golden Globes 2026 airs live on CBS and Paramount+ on Sunday, Jan. 11 at 8 p.m. ET.
