He was 48.

No explicit cause of death was given, but Van Der Beek announced in 2024 that he was battling colon cancer.

He was scheduled to appear alongside his ‘Dawson’s Creek’ castmates at a recent reunion, but was unable to attend due to health issues. Instead, he sent in a video message.
