Chuck Norris, legendary actor and martial artist, has died at age 86.

In news that broke Friday (March 20), Norris’ family took to Instagram to confirm he passed away on Thursday (March 19).

“It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the sudden passing of our beloved Chuck Norris yesterday morning,” they said in a post on Instagram. “While we would like to keep the circumstances private, please know that he was surrounded by his family and was at peace. To the world, he was a martial artist, actor, and a symbol of strength. To us, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather, an incredible brother, and the heart of our family. He lived his life with faith, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved,”

A revered martial artist who had a Black Belt in Karate, Taekwondo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, and more, the 86-year-old boasted a film and TV career that spanned over five decades with standouts including ‘The Way of the Dragon’ and – most famously – ‘Walker, Texas Ranger.’

A symbol of American masculinity, Norris will be remembered as one of entertainment’s most celebrated action heroes.
