Fortunately, it wasn’t the only thing he discussed. For he has a bone to pick with Rihanna‘s boyfriend Travis Scott and used the platform to reveal just how he feels about his alleged biting of his style.

Welcome to Retro Rewind, the new TGJ original feature that invites our readers on a journey to Entertainment’s glorious past.

Today, as news of a ‘Fresh Prince of Bel Air’ reboot heats excites the show’s fans we celebrate one of the show’s more powerful scenes.

In it, Will (aptly portrayed by Will Smith) attempts to build a relationship with the father he was abandoned by as a child only to find himself faced with hurt and disappointment when the man (portrayed by Ben Vereen) rejects him.

Showcasing layers African-American characters are often written without,  Will’s cracked delivery of “how come he doesn’t want me” would go on to stand as one of the television’s most memorable (and heartbreaking) lines.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s Actor Roundtable welcomed Will Smith, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Cain to the mix recently to bare all on their careers, their industry as it is today and why they turned roles picked up by the other.

It makes for an extremely interesting watch especially as it arrives as talk of racial discrimination against actors of colour by the Academy Awards heats up after Smith’s role in ‘Concussion’ was overlooked by its committee.

monica-code-red-cover-thatgrapejuice

Despite a solid reception from fans, Monica‘s newest album ‘Code Red’ hasn’t necessarily set the charts ablaze.

Opening at #27 on the Billboard 200 with first week sales of 33k, the numbers came as a surprise to some, yet were expected by others.

For, on the one hand, it’s arguably on-par with the sales of many recent R&B LP’s. And, given the lack of push for lead single ‘Just Right For Me’ (the video for which arrived six months after its premiere), the project’s sales could even be considered…impressive.

However, for others, selling such numbers during the holidays (a traditionally kinder retail climate) is a no-no.

Nonetheless, the Grammy winner insists “New year, New era, New plan.”

And the first order of play for 2016 is the announcement of a second single. Which track is being prepped for the full roll-out? Find out below…

macklemore-ryan-lewis-2016

Three years ago, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis all but owned the musical landscape. Seemingly out of nowhere, the indie duo dominated with hits such as ‘Thrift Shop,’ ‘Can’t Hold Us,’ and seismic smash ‘Same Love.’

The latter, along with their debut album ‘The Heist,’ earned the group Grammys – sparking controversy as they bested popular releases from the likes of Kendrick Lamar to do so.

To weather the storm, the pair took an extended leave of absence from the spotlight and returned last Summer with funkified Hip-Hip ode ‘Downtown.’

The track peaked at a respectable #12 on the Billboard Hot 100, and things have been relatively quiet since then.

All that is set to change though, because the group have formally announced their sophomore album and its release date – which is sooner than some may think.

rick ross tgj 2015 50 cnt

50 Cent may have scored a chuckle or two from fans over the past weeks as he’s mercilessly dissed fellow rapper Rick Ross, but now, from the looks of things, it’s the ‘Biggest Boss’ who will have the last laugh.

Taking to Rolling Stone recently, the ‘Black Market’ beau lit into 50 in a way like no one has before.  Lending commentary on everything from failed business ventures to familial issues, Ross left no stone unturned in handing his nemesis a “master-level read” – a move even the shadiest of misters and mistresses can appreciate.

To add insult to injury, the icing on the cake has now come in the form of an announcement from Epic Records sharing news the officer-turnt-rapper has seen his name added to their coveted roster.
