This week marks the 20th anniversary of Janet Jackson’s blockbuster album, ‘All For You.’
Its colorful and sweet second single, ‘Someone To Call My Lover’, is today’s From The Vault pick.
After the album’s title track broke records left and right all over the world, underperforming was definitely not an option for Ms. Jackson. In all its “tailor-made for radio” glory, ‘Lover’ was issued as the LP’s second offering in 2001.
Produced and written by Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis, and Jackson herself, it peaked at #3 in the US, #11 in the UK and #15 in Australia. Based on a sample of ‘Ventura Highway’ by rock band America, it seduced critics and fans alike with its bright and melodic aura.
Helmed by director extraordinaire Francis Lawrence, the song’s accompanying visual saw Jackson embark on a road trip of sorts, stopping at a bar where she sings and dances with the crowd. Contrary to the choreography-heavy ‘All For You’, this video was all about editorial shots and Jan’s natural charisma.
With this project, the superstar reclaimed her joy and her smile after battling depression – as documented on her previous LP ‘The Velvet Rope’ – and going through a messy divorce a year prior. Though we love ourselves some dancefloor Janet, her positivity is always infectious and remains a huge part of why the world has connected with her at such a level.
With a tell-all documentary coming out in 2022, a new album on the way, as well as possible plans to give the fans the tour that was affected by the global health crisis, Ms. Jackson has much on the way. And as always, we’ll be front row and center to receive what’s to come.
Less than 2 weeks before H.E.R. is set to fight for her first Academy Award, she’s given ‘Fight For You’ another rousing live rendition.
The heart-tugging tune, which is competing in the ‘Best Original Song’ category at the award show’s 93rd annual ceremony (April 25), is set to battle the likes of ‘Hear My Voice’ (from ‘Chicago Seven’), ‘Husavik’ (from ‘European Song Contest’), ‘Io Si’ (from ‘The Life Ahead’), and ‘Speak Now’ (from ‘One Night in Miami’) for the OSCAR gold.
Ahead of the showdown, the GRAMMY winner was spotted on the ‘Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ (April 12). While there, she dished about her dream of EGOT status, her history with the Apollo Theater, and more before launching into a stunning take of ‘Fight’ (originally found aboard the soundtrack of the film ‘Judas & the Black Messiah’).

Industry analysts have already suggested Cardi B‘s latest single, ‘Up,’ will live up to its namesake on the Billboard Hot 100 as it’s set to debut in the tally’s top 5 next week, but the GRAMMY winner is doing her part to ensure the promising premiere.
As the song takes streaming and digital download outlets by storm, B’s taking to the promo trail to increase awareness of the high octane single – her first solo effort since 2019’s ‘Press.’ Visiting ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ Thursday (February 11), Cardi dished on the pressure to follow-up the mega-success of her Megan Thee Stallion-assisted hit, ‘WAP,’ and her to desire to prove she was able to score a Hot 100 hit without the assistance of a feature.
And while fans continue to press her for details on ‘UP’s parent album, she’s redirected attention from her growing discography to her blossoming filmography.
