This week’s From The Vault feature comes from Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim and Mya. On March 27, 2001, the group released a cover of the Labelle classic ‘Lady Marmalade’ for the film ‘Moulin Rouge!’. Produced by Missy Elliott, the song was a monster hit, climbing to #1 in almost every major territory in the world including the US where it won a Grammy Award for ‘Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals’.

Vivacious and powerful, this record was enjoyably inescapable when it was released. All 4 women delivered on their parts and brought something distinctly unique to the table.

The thought of any such collaboration occurring amongst today’s younger crop of singers, however, is almost frightful. Can you imagine Rihanna, Katy Perry, Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj doing something like this? With the exception of Minaj’s contribution, the song would amount to nothing less than blaspheme.

Mariah Carey has yet another reason to celebrate as her ‘Merry Christmas II You’ album has become her 16th gold-certified album in the US. The icon’s 2nd Holiday collection was released on November 2nd and sold over 435k units in stores (with shipments exceeding 500k) after only 8 weeks in the US despite limited promotion. The gold certification was officially issued on January 11th.

These latest figures have taken Carey’s total album sales in the US to 53.2 million since 1991, giving her the highest numbers amongst women in the SoundScan era ahead of Celine Dion (51.1 million), Shania Twain (34 million) and Britney Spears (31.6 million). Moreover, Carey has the 3rd highest album sales of any artist (male or female) in that territory in the last 20 years.

In terms of shipments, the diva has moved over 63.5 million units in the US since her debut in 1990, placing her 3rd amongst women behind only Barbra Streisand (71.5 million) and Madonna (64 million). Legendary.

Sidebar: unlike conventional releases, Carey could promote this album during every Christmas season like she did with her 1st Holiday project. This means that ‘Merry Christmas II You’ has the potential to keep selling at the end of each year, eventually achieving platinum status and beyond. That is the key difference between Christmas records and standard LPs.

This week’s That Grape Juice Cover Star is Megan Vice. The US native turns in a solid rendition of Jessie J‘s banger ‘Do It Like A Dude’.

Check it out Vice’s stripped-back version below:

Though at times sounding somewhat ‘karaoke’ (J’s distinctive adlibs are becoming somewhat her trademark), Megan certainly held her own; delivering, with this performance, a great take, on an awesome song. Good stuff.

Peep Pop pretender Cheryl Cole on the cover of February’s Elle magazine. Ms. Cole’s talent may be an enigma, yet she sure stays posing on these covers. More power to her…I guess.

Tidbit: Cole’s current single ‘The Flood’ is struggling to pass the #18 spot on the Official UK Singles Charts. Ouch.
