Times really are a’changing.

As was potently spotlighted recently, no album prior to (or other than) Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ has hit Platinum status in the US this year. Indeed, whichever way it’s diced or sliced, music sales have been wallowing in the mire for several years now and it appears the American industry has had enough.

Today, it has been announced that from next week, the iconic Billboard 200 album chart will be revising its counting formula to include streams and downloads.

Welcome back to TGJ Replay!

Designed much like our ‘Retro Rewind’ and ‘From the Vault’ features, ‘Replay’ is That Grape Juice‘s newest retrospective segment – a written quest, if you will, to re-spin the gems and jams of yesterday.

Unlike its ‘Rewind’ and ‘Vault’ predecessors, ‘Replay’ looks to dust off and showcase entire albums (and eras) from a library of pop and Urban pop music hits.

With Lifetime Network gaining a bevy of bad reviews for its controversial, unauthorized biography of one of R&B’s most beloved characters, Aaliyah, we thought it a perfect time to shine some light and ode her debut album ‘Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number.’ As the album celebrated its 20th birthday this summer, let’s go back back to the ‘Back & Forth’ singer’s humble beginnings…

In recent times, Jordin Sparks has made headlines more for her romantic life than her music. And by no fault of her own.

Record label drama has seen the American Idol winner take a hiatus of sorts from the charts and focus instead on what she was able to do freely – act.

Now, with the worst behind her, the 24-year-old is re-affixing her attention on music.

This week saw the vocal powerhouse showcase material from her forthcoming album and we must say that we’re surprised.

Renowned for her markedly Pop skew, Sparks appears to have made a 180º turn and is this time aiming for the clubs.

See what we mean below…

Rita Ora remains hard at work on her second studio album (which’ll also dub as her American debut), yet the rising star is smartly staying in the spotlight.

For beyond bagging a bevy of endorsements, as well as a coaching gig on The Voice UK, the Roc Nation priority has also landed the lead single on the soundtrack to new movie ‘Beyond The Lights’.

Christened ‘Grateful’, the track awaits below…

‘Happy’ hitmaker Pharrell Williams continues to ride the wave of success this year.

Fresh from nabbing five nominations at the American Music Awards 2014, the Neptunes frontman appears a-front of the November (Men’s) issue of EBONY magazine.

Interestingly (and aptly given target of publication), the star also gushed about his love for Black women in response to the backlash he received from some for not featuring a darker skinned female on the cover for his album ‘G.I.R.L’.

“I love Black women. If you don’t think I love Black women, then you don’t understand me. I have obsessed over Black women since the days of Jayne Kennedy, Beverly Peele and Roshumba Williams. Those are the women I daydreamed about growing up.”

The November issue of EBONY is on newsstands now.

Roller-coaster.

If there’s any phrase that best captures the recent years of Alexandra Burke‘s career, it’d be exactly that. Roller-coaster.

The X Factor winner has triumphed with a number of chart-topping smashes; yet since parting ways with Simon Cowell and her subsequent record label after that, her journey has been one filled with both promising highs and challenging hurdles.

In an open letter to fans, the vocal powerhouse revealed that while she’s gearing up to release a new EP – it’ll be without the shepherding of former Def Jam juggernaut Kevin Liles. The exec and his KWL team, who manage the likes of Trey Songz, had been working with Burke on her much anticipated US debut. However, she has confirmed that they have now gone their separate ways.

Renown for her super-charged showings, the American Idol alum lived up to her billing – thrilling the thousands in attendance with tracks from her critically acclaimed discography, including ‘Free Yourself’ and ‘When I See You’. Jennifer Hudson‘s new album ‘JHUD’ may be off to a slow start, yet the Grammy and Oscar winning songstress isn’t letting that derail the promo push for the project.

The American Idol alum took to the stage at the Circle Of Sisters 2014 event yesterday at New York’s Madison Square Garden and ensured she delivered a showing that demanded attention.

Backed by a full band, the ‘Dreamgirls’ star performed the track that catapulted her to mainstream stardom ‘And I Am Telling You’.

It appears the song, which was first sung by Jennifer Holliday, is the gift that keeps giving. Because, just as it did upon her initial rendition in 2006, it potently reminds of the talent embedded in Hudson – regardless of sales.

Watch the epic showing below, where her performances of ‘Spotlight’ and new number ‘Bring Back The Music’ also await.
