Justin Timberlake has announced that he is to launch his own record label – Tennman Records – a joint venture with Interscope Records. The ‘My Love’ singer will function as the Los Angeles-based company’s CEO and chairman. International distribution will be handled by Interscope Geffen A&M. Speaking on the label, Timberlake said ‘We are all excited about the talent we have to offer already on our roster and I cannot wait to introduce the world to my new discoveries’. New signings to the label will be revealed in June.
As Justin joins the host of artists who own their own labels, I’m left wondering whether it will work or not. Most of these artists either use it as a means of increasing their own popularity i.e. 50 Cent or simply can’t cut it in their role; in both cases the new signee’s end up suffering. Time will tell if it ends up being a success.
According to reports, Beyonce’s younger sister, Solange, is to take over as her manager once their father, Matthew Knowles, steps down in five years. The singer/songwriter has revealed that she is the heiress to her dad’s Music World empire – which also includes a music label. She has been quoted as saying “In five years I’ll be answering those calls. I’ll be the president and CEO.”
I can imagine most of you are thinking ‘what the hell has Solange ever done?’…me too LOL. However, I can’t knock her hustle; she’s kept her name out there doing movies, presenting and songwriting. She’s probably more successful than she’s given credit for. Maybe it will work. I don’t get it though; isn’t she still trying to make it as an artist?
NY Daily News is reporting that R&B star Alicia Keys has pushed back the release of her third album from June to October. The official reason given by her spokesperson was that there were ‘scheduling conflicts’ with her blossoming acting career. However, it is rumoured that the singer is unhappy with the promotions situation at her label, J Records. Ken Wilson, the promotions director Keys ‘trusted and relied on’ was fired from the Clive Davis owned label.

Whatever the case, there are definite problems over at J Records. Solid albums by previously successful artists such as Fantasia and Monica severely underperformed due to bad promotion. It was as if the label’s artists would pop-up a month before their album would drop. With no single out now, Alicia would have been in the same situation come June. The label need to sort themselves out if they want their artists to actually sell; it’s not good when the top artist isn’t happy. It kinda makes me worry for upcoming J Records releases from Whitney Houston and Jennifer Hudson.

Jive Records is back for the next generation of music.
