Christina Aguilera and the promotional machine behind her movie debut ‘Burlesque’ have pulled out all the stops in ensuring the film opens to big box-office numbers this Holiday season.
After three days of playing to theatres across the US, the projected numbers for the movie’s first week figures ($) have surfaced.
Find out whether Ms. Aguilera’s recent career troubles are to be erased or further worsened after the jump…
According to Deadline, ‘Burlesque’ grossed $2.8 million on its first day of release last Wednesday; with the Thanksgiving weekend boost seeing industry projections placing its final 5-day Holiday run at #3 with $17.8million.
The movie’s predicament needn’t give fans nor critiques reason to celebrate…yet. For, the Screen Jems / Sony produced musical sits in somewhat of an indeterminate position. Put simply, the situation is neither black nor white; more a cloudy grey as at writing.
Why, you may ask? Well, ‘Burlesque’ cost the studio $50million to produce, hence in order for it to be pegged the hit Aguilera needs it to be, this figure (and then some) will need to be made back at the box office. Rare is it for a movie to recoup its entire production budget during the first week on show; rather ‘Burlesque’s’ success is dependant on its performance in the weeks ahead.
With an international release due next month and a string of promotional spots ahead, it’s all still to play for…

Assuming the projection’s right, that really doesn’t seem bad to me for a musical with an untested leading lady competing against both Harry Potter and Disney. Even her hardcore fans haven’t been predicting a smash (well, except the really psycho ones who are best ignored anyway) lol
I doubt they’ll be too disappointed – that’s nearly 1/3 of the budget back first week and they’ll pull in enough worldwide to cover it.

With a $55 million budget ? Yes hun, I call that a flop. They couldn’t even make a third of the money back in the first week. That’s not a good luck, especially with the amount of promotion but into it, which also costs money.
Screen Gems is in the red with this film, sorry.

SAM; can u all do some reserch? the budget for burlesque was $55million
it needs to at least double that to turn a profit, you’re right that nothing can be said yet but this film is luck that most of the films out now have been out for 3-4 weeks.
the test will come in the next 2 wks to see how far it drops. I’m not sure that it will make $55mil domestically
$2.4mil on TGDay is sort of lame

Unsure of whether I should go watch the movie or not I decided to check out some reviews. Some of which read as follows:
1. “Burlesque never even goes terribly, irretrievably wrong. It’s just dishwater dull”
2.”Trash comes in all forms, but rarely in a sequined G-string. That’s all there is to a brain-dead, cliché-riddled pastiche of old Betty Grable movies called Burlesque. ”
3. “The choicest dialogue in Burlesque provokes the sort of laughter that other, intentionally funny films only dream of generating. ” LOL
Which makes me wonder…Didn’t X-tina stans say that this movie was getting critical acclaim. Anywho based on such reviews I will not be watching the movie.

I’m not a STAN for Xtina by no mean, but the movie was GREAT… the acting, singing, dancing, story line, everything… It wasn’t just Xtina, but it was the ENTIRE cast. Xtina didn’t pull this off by herself… People will be quick to call this a flop that have NOT bothered to see the movie at all. This movie will far exceed 55 million dollars. This is Thanksgiving weekend. People are mainly shopping for Christmas gifts, no going to movies… Plus Burlesque is up against the HARRY POTTER movie… I mean come on….

I read some where that it was mainly people in their 50′s going to see the movie. Those are Cher’s fans obviously, and a gross of 2.4-2.8 million on a week of Thanksgiving is a major flop. Especially when movies like Tangle, and Harry Potter took in over 10 million.
The movie is estimated to gross 16 million by the end of the week, but others musicals have been much more successful at the box office.

1st of CONGRATS to Xtina & Cher – I predicted around 20mill. $17.8mill will be great but if it does $10mill they are still on track to surpass 50mill ww.
I love how ppl call this a flop when many movies starring A List actors/actresses opened with less or similar numbers.
The Town opened at NO.1 with 23mill and that went on to gross over 100mill ww.
Julia Roberts Eat Pray Love opened with $12mill – grossed over 100mill
Jennifer Aniston The Switch opened with 8.1mill etc.
Only movies that are based on books, comics etc. will do like 50 – 100mill in its opening week e.g. Harry Potter, Twilight etc.

I saw this movie with my cousin. It was fun! I enjoyed it.
PROS:
- Stanley Tucci was wonderful, as always.
- Cher = statuesque goddess. It’s easy to see why she’s a legend.
- Cam Gigandet and Eric Dane were both delicious to look at.
- Gorgeous, exquisite costumes.
- Fabulous musical numbers.
(And last but not least…)
- Christina! As someone who’s usually pretty indifferent about her, I can honestly say without bias that I was impressed by her performance. Her acting was charming, convincing, and surprisingly natural. I’m not saying she deserves an Oscar nom or anything, but it was easy to see her as Ali (the character she played) and not “Christina Aguilera trying to act.”
Also, she looked AMAZING, which was a pleasant surprise because I’m so used to seeing her look like a hot mess at events. Whoever did her hair and makeup for this movie should be hired as her full-time hair-and-makeup person, because she looked so young and pretty and fresh! Her body looked fantastic as well. I don’t understand why she can’t look like this all the time…
Her voice sounded phenomenal. Really. I’m starting to think she should just quit pop music and do Broadway or something instead, because honestly, her voice is wasted on pop music. The kind of songs that become #1 hits today–Tik Tok, California Gurls, etc.–don’t rely on vocal talent at all, which means that Christina has no competitive advantage in the field. And her voice really is wonderful, so she should find something that can showcase it properly.
CONS:
- The plot sucked, was predictable and full of cliches, etc.
Anyway…overall, I’d recommend it. It won’t blow your mind and change your life, but it’s enjoyable and worth your money.

It’s only a flop if it doesn’t make back the money it cost to produce the film. Between the weekend, international releases, and DVD sales, I’d say this movie will be fine.
Only worry if it makes $3 million the entire run. That would be reason to call it a major flop.

Nobody here needs to be talking crap about this movie if you haven’t seen it! Also, the hating on Christina is so childish. I can tell the people on this blog are twelve years old. I saw the movie and I loved it. The musical numbers blew me away and I agree with another person who said Christina should just leave pop music and do broadway because that woman has a set of pipes that’s too good for the craptastic noise on the radio now. She was very impressive in this movie and she carried it well. For a musical with a first time leading lady, I think $17 million is great. It freakin beat out Faster and Love & Other Drugs which starred more established actors, not to mention it had to compete with Potter and Tangled, on thanksgiving weekend, which are family films.
You people on this site are so damn sad. You just sit around your computer waiting for the girl to fail and hoping she does. Sorry to break it to you but this movie isn’t a flop. #3 debut is very good for this genre and it’s gonna gross more than Glitter, Showgirls, and Crossroads. All movies that it was compared to. I’ve seen all three of these movies and Burlesque was more entertaining than all of them combined. Go on over to yahoo movies and see what viewers had to say about it. It has an overall A- grade. Not to mention, the soundtrack is doing fantastic. So what the hell is all this whining about it being a flop? A flop is debuting at #8 with barely two million dollars, which is pretty much what all these bitter little haters predicted! You people need to analyze your own lives and why the hell you want to see people fail so badly. If Christina Aguilera was the irrelevant flop you say she is, you all wouldn’t be watching her so closely. Contradicting yourselves much?

I saw BURLESQUE and it was AWSEOME! Any negative comments in here are strictly people who have been jealous of Christina’s talent all along and want to see her fail. How sad for you people that your life consists of wishing ill will on people. And with those box office estimates the movie will bring in over $20 million it’s first week making it a definite HIT (especially considering musicals generally don’t fare as well at the box office, but do EXTREMELY well in DVD sales)! Christina was on Conan recently, and where I at one time thought she might be a little “cold” found her utterly charming and enjoyable…Don’t let the detractors keep you away from the movie….you will be REALLY MISSING OUT! And the ones who say “oh, yeah, I’m not going because of the critics (who for the most part have been favorable)” aren’t to be believed. They had the bias towards the movie in the first place. GO, ENJOY YOURSELF. AND LET THE HATERS BOIL!

people are only calling it a fail in hope it will fail because they find christina a threat. its pathetic that people insist in slagging off such a beautiful hearted woman who this year fed over 90million children what did you do? fuck all and what did your favourite singers do who you worship… fuck all… the real cold hearted horrible people are the ones slagging off christina.. the film is doing great no one was expecting it to be a number 1 over harry potter. this film is going to be a long lasting film just like the album is sticking to top 10 itunes like theres no tomorrow.. it even went to no:1 for a few hours and went bk down to no:2 it just keeps rising, it also sold out in walmart and amazon, but amazon have had more stock in. you idiots need to think before you speak before you slag off inocent people like christina. slag off gaga shes the one who insults people who interview her making them feel small and shes completely rude the biggest woman in fashion Anna completely hates lady gaga she had to tell gaga off for acting childish.. beyonce is a money eating machine anything for a quick buck. Cannot wait for burlesque to come out in uk!! so excited!

Burlesque: Best Opening Weekend for Cher
Los Angeles – Burlesque may be facing stiff competition from Harry Potter and Tangled, but the movie musical starring Cher and Christina Aguilera is on its way to making $18 million dollars over the five day holiday frame.
The film, which marks Cher’s first starring role since 1999’s Tea With Mussolini, is expected to take in more than $12 million opening weekend. Burlesque already took in $5 million on Wednesday and Thursday.
Cher’s previous best opening weekend was for The Witches of Eastwick in 1987.
The film cost $50 million to produce and should make that money back in its stateside release. The film is expected to do better in its international release next month.
buh bye!

DEAD @ some xtina haters here and calling her a flop… news flash: she earns more than you and has more talent than any of you haters.. it makes me laugh reading these sad hate comments.. like you think your better than her or something.. get me a break.. if you dont like her then shut up.. easy and simple.. cuz at the end of the day, she is way above all you haters… i suggest to evaluate what your life is right now and her life cuz its so obviously, she is way above you haters..
are you earning like her? do you have the talent to do what she does?
im literally laughing because some are hatin’ but come to think of it, you pretty much dont have a life… so keep on hatin’.. lets see what it does with you life..

I predict it will go over $40 million domestically & pull in a small chunk of change overseas that could add up to say $12 million. Most of its costs will be met in the theaters, but it can recoup the rest in DVD, BlueRay and airing on cable over the next couple years. All in all, it was not a huge success, but for its stars they got what they wanted.

I remember when going to the movies was a treat, a big event. Also, interesting that so many people on here have such hatred toward others. I loved this film. I thought Cher really rocked and she shows she is still hot and still vulnerable and beautiful. Christina’s voice blew me away. And the costumes and set, and Stanley Tucci and the others were great fun. It’s not a film about just one person, but the whole cast makes it what it is. I also agree it was like Cabaret without the Nazis. Burlesque is the revival of a lost art. I hope it makes a bazillion dollars. I enjoyed it as did my cynical Scottish date.
