Mariah Carey Talks ‘New Breed’ Of Divas

Published: Sunday 19th Dec 2010 by Sam

In a recent interview with the UK’s Pride magazine, pregnant diva Mariah Carey offered her views on the ‘new breed of divas’. Check out what the  expectant mother of twins  had to say after the jump…

Via Mariah Daily:

Who do you admire out of the new breed of divas?

I don’t really follow every new act — they come out constantly. There are so many, it’s often hard to keep track, and sometimes they’re here today and gone tomorrow. I admire my friends, like Beyonce and Nicki Minaj — people who seem destined to be doing this for a living with longevity.

While I feel it too soon to to deem Minaj a diva, kudos to Mariah for picking acts with undeniable talent and drive. Then again, a seasoned diva herself, I expect no less from ol’ Mimi. As an acclaimed singer-songwriter (with a career spanning two decades), I’m sure she knows the difference between true talent and flavour of the moment (“eh eh eh”).

Interesting nonetheless would be her views on the likes of Leona, Jennifer Hudson, and the like. For, many argue such singers to be the new breed occupying the stiletto’s once strutted in by the likes of Mariah and Whitney Houston.

Your thoughts?

yet she didn’t mention Leona Lewis (who posed as a threat early on) or Jennifer Hudson who trumps Beyonce with great range. Anywho!

  2. Poisonous December 19, 2010

so true Trucie, Leona totaly knocks it ryt out of the park.

  3. TIMMI December 19, 2010

Obviously Mariah is going to choose those who she is closest to. It’s not a big thing.

    Article-worthy? I’m not sure.

  4. Jayonce December 19, 2010

Yess!! Omg J-Hud is DEFINATELY the new Whitney!
That b**** can belt the BLACK off me!! Girl get it!

  5. Lewis December 19, 2010

It’ss too early for yall to be hatin… dag!

  6. Jayonce December 19, 2010

IS THAT THE DOG FROM PRECIOUS?!

  7. GIMMIE DAT BASS December 19, 2010

Nicki has no talent……and everyone always kisses Beyawnce’s b*** pads just because. Not article worthy. Fail.

  8. sleeper December 19, 2010

the haters are mad mariah knows REAL talent when she sees it go BEY

  9. Boricua December 19, 2010

Jennifer Hudson is NOT the new Whitney…

  10. LDJ_BEY December 19, 2010

Yay at Mariah for mentioning Beyonce. She loves Beyonce just like everyone else. That what makes Beyonce the queen right now.

Lmfao @ Gimmie Dat Bass….Shouldn’t you be helping Ciara sell her “Flop Instinct” album…She’s only gonna do 40k this week….lmfao…BEYONCE WOULD NEVER!!!!

  11. SparkD December 19, 2010

Jennifer is NOT the NEW Whitney because Clive Davis has not completely brought the vocal beast out of her. Jennifer has range—and few people acknowledge that, but I’d love to see more vocal skillfulness along with her belts. Jennifer might trump Beyonce in belting and range (yes, range), but she doesn’t have the control, pitch, or skillfulness that Beyonce has acquired. But God, when she gets it, Whitney better hide—Jen nor Beyonce have beautiful tones/timbres like Mariah or Whitney.

Leona Lewis was marketed as “the new Mariah” by Simon Cowell to get more attention, but her training is more similar to Celine Dion. Now her head voice is the best in the game outside of Mariah—no other diva could mast the song “I Can’t Breathe” like Leona.

  12. LEA December 19, 2010

you mad boricua, Jennifer IS so deal with it. Honestly when she named Nicki Minaj that voided everything else she was going to say after that. Nicki is NO Diva, and her rapping skills are sub-par at best. NEXT

  13. LEA December 19, 2010

Beyonce is overrated as a vocalist and dancer, we don’t need to go over that again …

  14. RAY December 19, 2010

PERSONALLY I THINK THE ONLY PEOPLE AMONG THE NEW CROP OF MAINSTREAM ARTISTES (IE ARTISTES WHO HAVE BEEN ACTIVE SINCE 2000) THAT ARE LIKELY TO BE LEGENDARY ARE

    YES, BEYONCE
    MJB
    ALICIA KEYS
    BRITNEY SPEARS AND
    JENNIFER HUDSON

LEONA IS TALENTED BUT I DOUBT SHE WILL GET THE ATTENTION SHE DESERVES, CHRISTINA IS ALSO TALENTED BUT I AM NOT SURE IF PEOPLE WILL STILL CARE TO FIND OUT WHO SHE WAS IN 2070, AND AS FOR GAGA SHE JUST GOT HERE IF SHE CONTINUES AT THE SAME PACE FOR ABT 10 YRS THEN YES, AND LASTLY RIHANNA COULD BE ON THAT LIST BUT SINCE SHE DOESNT HAVE A GREAT DEAL OF CRITICAL ACCLAIM AM NOT SURE, SHE ISNT A SUPER POWER COMMERCIAL WISE EITHER…HMM AH WELL

  15. SparkD December 19, 2010

    New Breed of Diva:

LEONA – Best Head Voice In The Game; Most pure, pleasant, and beautiful tone/timbre (besides Tamia with purity)

JENNIFER – Most powerful belts in the game (surprisingly high register, but rarely used.)

BEYONCE – Most complete vocals in the game, and vocal theatrics are ridiculous

CHRISTINA – Amazing tone, great ornamentation..is it time to get back your crown?

FANTASIA – Best saaaaanging out of the new breed—her emotions and theatrics are beastly ( she just needs more BEAUTY with that BEAST)

  16. MARIAH 4EVA December 19, 2010

I DONT THINK NICKI SHOULD BE CONSIDERED LEGEND YET,BEYONCE MORE LIKE IT, AND WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE COMPARISONS,BEY ,JHUD,LEONA ALL TALENTED BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMEN,IF WE DONT START SUPPORTING OUR OWN,NONE OF OUR PEOPLE WILL EVER SELL A MILL LIKE TAYLOR JUST DID, SO STOP CREATING FEUDS AND SUPPORT BLACK MUSIC

  17. RAY December 19, 2010

AND YEAH I FORGOT TO ADD FANTASIA, SHE COULD PROBABLY BE LEGENDARY TOO

  18. Info December 19, 2010

All Yall are forgetting the other new set of DIVAS as well. Too many people pay attention to the always in your face singers but not the others.

    Chrisette Michele
    Ledisi
    Meliane Fiona
    Jazmine Sullivan

Please don’t over look these ladies cuz they are important as well.

  19. dboy December 19, 2010

    @mariah 4eva

couldnt have said it better myself

theres a reason why nicki’s pain in the ass is only a has-been lil kim
music isn 1 of our best assetts but God forbid beyonce remains successful cus there’s Jhud, or whitney get a comeback cus there’s leona, whereas caucasians keep multiplying in the industry

  20. SparkD December 19, 2010

    @Info

Ledisi is a beast. Chrisette Michelle consistently sounds amazing in her current live performances, and I heard Leona Lewis last tour, which was weak vocally—and I’m a HUGE Leona fan.

There’s so many other great divas I didn’t need..

But for the IN-YO-FACE-NEW-BREED the game is open because all have their specialties. I don’t think anyone can sell emotion and connection to a song like Fantasia ; but no pop diva is selling entertainment to the fullness like Beyonce. Both are stellar performers, but are totally different. The prior two divas head voices aren’t seeing Leona’s.

  21. SparkD December 19, 2010

Remember the days of the pretty r&b dance girls: Pebbles, Karyn White, Jody Watley, Vanessa Willams. 3 of the 4 could dance and sing. One of the four could saaaaang!

At that time, there were two dominant black queens ruling: Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston

Everybody else had to take a seat. Boy, times haven’t changed with black divas.

  22. John December 19, 2010

People, the answer Mariah made has nothing controversial on it. She simply named two who are closest to her, that´s all. She didn´t say Beyonce is better than the rest or something like that. She said she can´t follow every new act and chose 2. Could have been another 2 different. She for sure knows Nicki is not a diva… just that she sympathizes with her and Beyonce. Not interesting post at all on here. Only that Sam needed to clean Bey´s image a little after this disaster of a week her image had

  23. Traci Summers December 19, 2010

??? I CANT AT THE WORLD. HOW IS NICKI A DIVA. DAMNN PPL ARE ON NICKI’S D*** HARDDDDD

  24. Spunkypoop December 19, 2010

her friends beyonce and nicki Minaj. I’m So sick of it! ( in my lil kim voice) why is it that everybody is using the name friend with Bey!!

  25. Info December 19, 2010

    @SPARKD

Yes u are right about leonas head voice but, dat is about all I personally like from her, Im not a fan of Leona. She can sing real good but, to me she dont have that HMPH about her voice like Fantasia, Beyonce, Mariah, and all the rest of the female singers have. Im used to raspy, raw, power, soulful singers and Leona doesnt do that for me, so me personally I wouldnt put her in the New Divas of Today to tell you the truth. I mean if she got with the right writers and producers and worked on her stage presence, then mayb but, for now I don’t see it. I see….

    Beyonce
    Fantasia
    Jennifer
    Chrisette
    Ledisi
    Melaine
    Jazmine
    Mayb Christina…

But I know theres more talented women out there too, so the list is probably even bigger cuz right now I cant think of the real good singers from other countries.

  26. baba December 19, 2010

    @SPARKD I COULDNT AGREE MORE
FANTASIA IS AMAZING,U REALLY FEEL HER EMOTIONS WHEN SHE SINGS LIKE ITS COMING FROM WITHIN, I THINK CHRISETTE,JILL,JAZMINNE, INDIA ARIE AND MELANIE FIONA ARE JUST AS GOOD AS THE BEYONCE’S, MJB’S, AND ALICIA’S OF THIS WORLD BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY AS AT NOW IT SEEMS ONLY JILL AND INDIA ARE LIKELY TO BE REMEMBERED A CENTURY FROM NOW, ITS TOO EARLY TO SAY FOR CHRISETTE AND CO WE WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT N SEE.
AND @MARIAH FOREVER I COULD AGREE MORE THE BLACK COMMUNITY HAS
LOTS OF TALENT THAT WE COULD PUSH
    LOOK AT
    JILL SCOTT
    CHRISETTE MICHELLE
    MELANIE FIONA
    INDIA ARIE
    JAZMINNE SULLIVAN
    JANELLE MONAE
    MONICA
    BRANDY
    FANTASIA
    CIARA
    RIHANNA
    ALICIA KEYS
    BEYONCE
    MJB
    LEONA
JHUD I COULD GO ON ON, WE ARE JUST SITTING THERE CRITICIZING WHILE PPL LIKE KESHA, AND KATY PERRY ARE SELLING RECORDS, WE NEED TO MAKE THINGS HAPPEN, OR ELSE THE NEXT GENERATION WONT HAVE ANY BLACK FEMALE SINGERS TO LOOK UP TO LIKE WE DO ,ARETHA,TINA AND DIANA

  27. HOLA December 19, 2010

i find it interesting that beyonce’s name has now become synonymous with diva or legend, i doubt Mariah even thought that answer thru enough. The Media has sold Bey as the next big thing since Diana Ross and Tina Turner for a such a long tym that when someone thinks of diva her name automatically pops up,as to whether they actually think she is,is a whole other question, And to make matters worse bey made a song called DIVA. So its glued onto ppls minds.
Although i think Bey has done awesome for herself, she needs to produce that album that would solidify her diva status.
Something like Lauryn Hill’s Miseducation, i mean thats Lauryn only solo album to date but its such a classic, its soo timeless ppl r still jamming to it today, that 1 album was enough to solidify her as a Hip Hop Legend, Bey needs that kinna album

  28. MissImpartial December 19, 2010

THE REASON FOR NO BLACK FEMALE TO BE SLAYING NOW IS BECAUSE THE URBAN SCENE IS NOT SUPPORTING THEM. YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THIS WEBSITE TO FOR EXAMPLE TO SEE HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE HAPPY FOR CIARA OR KERI TO FAIL. BEYONCE IS THE ONLY ONE STANDING NOT COUNTING RIHANNA AS SHE IS POP.
RADIO DOES NOT SUPPORT R’N’B ANYMORE UNLESS IT IS URBAN.
I DON’T LIKE THE SEPARATION IN RADIO INTO CORNERS POP AND URBAN.

IN THE EARLY 2000-2005 R’N’B WAS HUGE THEN IT TOTALLY SHIFTED. THERE WERE THE LIKES OF J.LO, ASHANTI, ALICIA KEYS, DC. REPRESENTING URBAN SCENE.

WHERE NOWADAYS IT’S ONLY POP STARS SUCH AS KESHA, RIHANNA, TAYLOR, AND KATY PERRY, AND GAGA.

  29. the kiddz December 19, 2010

Beyonce is the most important female singer to come along in 20 years, since Mariah Carey.

Beyonce has spun qualities from so many major artists, Michael, Janet, Madonna, Mariah Donna, Tina, Diana, into this near perfect pop star. She took everything to the next level and no, she isn’t the worlds greatest balladeer. She doesn’t have the interpretive brilliance of Barbra Streisand, or the blazing vocals of Aretha, the power of Shirley Bassey; those qualities found their best synthesis in Mariah and Whitney. BUT she is the one to beat and she’s not going anywhere.

  30. MissImpartial December 19, 2010

THE ONLY PEOPLE YOU WILL DESERVE LEGENDARY STATUS ARE:

    BRITNEY SPEARS
    BEYONCE
    CHRISTINA AGUILERA
    PINK
    ALICIA KEYS
MARY J BLIGE( I THOUGHT SHE ALREADY IS CONSIDERED A DIVA)

NICKI WILL NEVER BE AS SHE IS A RAPPER AND HAS NO VOCAL TALENT WHAT SO EVER.

  31. the kiddz December 19, 2010

    @SparkD

“I don’t think anyone can sell emotion and connection to a song like Fantasia” – I sort of agree, I do think that Beyonce can convey the same amount of emotion, though. Her tone is naturally soulful, but songs like Single Ladies don’t showcase it. A friend of mine did a great job showcasing this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rNGfl7cQr9o

  32. king215 December 19, 2010

I USUALLY DONT POST IN THESE BLOGS BUT I AM TODAY..FIRST OF ALL YA’LL ARE NAMING WHO WILL “BE” LEGENDS/DIVAS IN THE FUTURE..AND YA’LL ARE TRYNNA TO FIND ONE REASON OR ANOTHER TO HATE ON SOMEONE..FIRST OF ALL MARY J. HAS BEEN IN DA GAME 20 YEARS IN 2011 SO SHE ALREADY IS A LEGEND!! SO TAKE HER OUT OF THIS “NEW BREED” THING…NUMBER TWO, EVERYBODDY ELSE THAT YA’LL ARE NAMING (BEE, JENNIFER, CHRISTINA, LEONA,FANTASIA, RIHANNA AND ALL DA OTHERS) WILL BE LEGENDS/DIVAS TOO..EVEN IF THEY AREN’T SUCCESSFUL FROM TODAY ON..BACK IN THE DAY, PATTI LA BELLE, GLADYS KNIGHT, AND OTHERS, WASN’T AS BIG AS DIANA ROSS OR ARETHA, BUT TODAY THEY ARE STILL LEGENDS..LEGEND ISN’T ABOUT ALBUM SALES, ITS ABOUT HOW LONG U BEEN IN GAME..WHETHER UR SELLIN OR NOT..SO REALLY ITS NO NEED TO COMPARE WHO WILL BE A LEGEND/DIVA, BECAUSE THEY ALL WILL EVENTUALLY..

  33. the kiddz December 19, 2010

    @MissImpartial

Isn’t Mary J already a Legend? She’s influenced an entire generation of female artists, even Drake is influenced by her.

  34. MissImpartial December 19, 2010

    @KIDDZ

I DID NOT SAY SHE IS NOT. THAT’S WHY I PUT IN BRACKETS SAYING I THOUGHT SHE IS ALREADY CONSIDERED ONE.

  35. the kiddz December 19, 2010

    ^^^
I know, just thought it was kinda weird to include her in a category of females from an entirely different generation.

  36. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

    Shes not lying,
there are so many new acts who comes out and drops number 1s after number 1s….they become cocky and think they are the s***, not realizing they are very easily replaceable…

I wouldnt say Beyonce is on icon status..diva maybe, icon HELL NAWL..

nicki better hope shes still around in the next couple of years..and stop talking s*** about legends…

people may call Mariah a flop, but they forget the broad already sold over 200 million worldwide..shes been in this game for almost 2 decades…nobody has ever replaced Mariah, she has ZERO COMPETITION…

when ur favorite artist been in thiS game for 20 yrs, and has sold over 200million and has the most number 1 single as an artist…
than FEEL FREE TO TALK S***, UNTIL THEN SHUT UR A** UP

  37. the kiddz December 19, 2010

And what about the “Divos”, how come the male artists get no love? Lol

  38. Nichole December 19, 2010

Mariah should have given a more thorough answer on the new breed of talent, and regardless of her answer, I’m sure she pays attention.

Beyonce and Nicki, really? The interviewer didn’t ask her about her “friends,” he/she asked Mariah about the new breed of talent.

If other huge artists like Janet, Madonna, Whitney, Patti, Tina, etc don’t mind answering those questions, then Mariah shouldn’t as well.

I remember one time Mariah said she loved Keyshia Cole. It would be nice to see who else she’s fond of, out of the younger generation of singers.

For the record, J-Hud is not a better singer than Bey. I put her on the same page as Patii, because just like Patti, Jennifer’s voice is too loud and can be annoying at times.

  39. Badd December 19, 2010

    @ GIMMIE DAT BASS:

    I concur.

  42. Driod December 19, 2010

Was there really a need for you to shade rihanna in this post (eh eh eh)

  43. Sade December 19, 2010

Nicki Minaj has no talent, I can’t wait for her to fall the f*** off

  44. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

after reading all the commentts Ive come to one conclusion..some people doesnt know what a legend or icon means..

they assume because the person is very popular, can drop single hits and their album sells that they are a legend or icom..

having hit singles doesnt mean ur an Icon or legend…it takes years of hard work, having more than 1 album going platinum or diamond on a short period of time..and having albums with songs that moves u, and albums/songs that you can still se ur self listening yrs after yrs

that beind said, in a way beyonce is on icon status, she does work her a** off, and has platinum albums…buttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt.the majority of her albums has no meaning..her songs are NOT ICON NOR LEGENG STATUS..
the only album that she has that has meaning, is DENGEROULSY IN LOVE..

  45. the kiddz December 19, 2010

    @RATEDXXX(AKA RATEDX)

Why is there such a need for “meaning” from Beyonce? And how are her songs not iconic? I had no idea there was a criteria songs had to fit in to be considered iconic. But since YOU know what an icon/legend is, please elaborate.

  46. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

    @jewelz
    lol
you’re right Beyonce is here to stay..

I may get on her a** about certain ways she does business..which i dont approve of..

but I got to give the broad props..she works her a** off, not many people can achieve what bey bey has done so far..
yes she had helped achieving those goals, yes she cheated to achieve some of the goals she has…

but shes is one of the best bishes out there..so for that i got to give the broad her props..

  47. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

here come her stans starting s***…

i mean really, is it that damn deep…

people cant state their honest opinion on something without u stans getting all crazy?

    calm the hell down..

if my opinions bothers u stans, well built a bridge and get over it…

cause coming at me with all that crap, IS NOT GONNA MAKE ME CHANGE HOW I FEEL

  48. the kiddz December 19, 2010

Seems like someone can’t answer a simple question. But, of course when they get boxed in a corner, they call the other a stan. How ridiculous

  49. 123456 December 19, 2010

The only flavour of the moment was Ciara while Rihanna is still here. Talent prevails whispers dont

  50. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

I mean really some people need to get a new hobby, cause being stuck so far up somebody a**, and getting mad at everything people say negative about ur fav, that s*** is not natural..

I mean how many times Ive I read that Mariah is a flop, that Gaga is a gimmick, tha Jazmine is a flop who cant sing, that Britney is a gimmick and she has no talent..

u dont see me going all a** s*** and calling people out of their names, because they dont like my favorites or they talk s*** about my favorite..

cause ITS NOT THAT DAMN DEEP..
in the business that my favorites are in, I know not many people goin to like them…thats their opinion..it doesnt matter how many albums u sell, number 1 hits u have, how good u cansing or dance, theres always gonna be somebody whos not gonna like u…

but if ur a** is doing shady s***, be ready to get ur a** call out, i dont give a dam how much u sell how good u are

  51. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

I dont need to answer any of the STANS questions….especially the ones who starting s*** for no damn reason..

if u feel im boxed into a corner, well sweety thats great….dont give a dam how u feel..

again my opinion is the only ones that count..built a bridge and get over it

  52. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

if u feel that beyonce is an icon or a legend..and her songs are great..

    good for u…

but dont come at me sideways and try to start s*** because i dont feel the same way u do..

that s*** makes u look sad and damn near pathetic…

  53. Viki December 19, 2010

Mariah doesn’t know a diva cause she isn’t one herself. A diva is Barbara, Diana, Aretha, Madonna, and Whitney.

Mariah is obviously more dumb then I thought she was, they asked her who are the better divas of today, and the has-been flop heffa named who is closer to her instead. What a dimwit.

    Best Whistle notes>>>Mariah

    Best Tone>>>>Whitney

Best headnotes>>>>Whitney in her prime was a beast

    Best dancer>>>>>Janet

    Best lows>>>>Toni Braxton

  54. the kiddz December 19, 2010

Why are you getting so upset? Nowhere in my question did I come at you “sideways”, I don’t go attacking people on the internet. As you said, it’s not that serious. And there you go calling me a stan again, I could care less about album sales. I merely asked you what makes a song iconic? And why does she need to sing about politics and global warming, songs with “meaning”? That was it. Nowhere did I curse or call you any derogatory names, but I guess.

  55. DION-ISH December 19, 2010

I Wouldnt exactly Consider my Rih Rih a “Diva” sooo that was in no way shade to her far as i say…. *Rolls Neck*

  56. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

    lol
takes alot to get on my nerves…booboo

ur not starting s***? oh please…..ur not a stan? oh please..
who the hell said beyonce has to sing about world hunger, war, politics?

i stated, beyonce may be on iconic status, beyonces songs are not iconic, cause years from now nobody is gonna remember them…they have zero meaning..who the hell is gonna remember I’m a diva, single ladies put a ring on it, it too big its too wide..

now, i had already answered ur question..if u had read my whole comment and try to comprehend it, instead of picking up pieces of it and try to start s***…

  57. Jordan December 19, 2010

im confused as to what makes nicki a diva if she cant sing…

  58. RatedXxX(aka ratedX) December 19, 2010

so damn typical of stans…only pick the negative s*** people say and try to start s***..
and then act like they are not stans….man please..theres no need to lie..

I can undertand is I was calling beyonce ugly, and said she cant sing or dance for s***..

yea u have every right to get mad..

but because u feel beyonce is the s*** and everything she does is great and some people dont feaal that way, theres no need to try to come at therm,,,since its a comment section and they have every right to state their opinion, just like u..

  59. the kiddz December 19, 2010

How again am I starting s***? If I was a stan I would be calling you names for not agreeing with me. Simple, really. And you’ve contradicted yourself in your comments.

“beyonces songs are not iconic, cause years from now nobody is gonna remember them…they have zero meaning”

That’s a bold assumption considering you can’t see into the future. And you pick three songs out of her entire catalog. What about Halo, CIL, etc? And saying SL won’t be remembered is quite foolish considering how big the song was. But, I see where you’re coming from. Now was that so hard?

  60. SparkD December 19, 2010

@TheKiddz Theatrics is not emotions…what Mary J. Blige and Fantasia does is the kind of soul and emotion I’m talking about.

  61. OKAY December 19, 2010

Beyonce is here to stay as for Nicki Minaj she will be irrelevant in the next two years to come.

  62. Yellow Gorillah December 19, 2010

If Nicki Minaj is a Diva

Then RIHANNA is a diva GOODAY!

  63. SparkD December 19, 2010

Just like Mary J. Blige’s marketing team at the defunct Uptown records, gave her the title “queen of hip-hop” soul, Beyonce’s team gave her the title ICON. Her team strategically placed that title on her, because nobody else did.

She’s a mini diva—well, I’ll say diva. She’s been in the game for 12 years. I think Beyonce, Christina, and Britney deserve their titles.

And for Mary J. Blige, there were singers like Mi’chele and Queen Latifah that were blending hip-hop and soul together before she did it. Uptown Records and Puffy were marketing geniuses for giving her a title she lived up to and surpass. I believe Beyonce’s team is calling it as they see it WILL BE. I do believe she will be an iconic figure.

But the influence Mary. J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Janet, Madonna, and Whitney Houston has had over a generation—-I think Beyonce is one of the few that will have that influence.

Mary, Mariah, Madonna, Janet and Whitney have changed whole sounds, genres, images, and so one. It goes beyond being ever present.

  64. Beystanbish December 19, 2010

Bey is here to stay. Stay Mad b******. been ending b****** caruuur since 97. Who gone check her? @ratedrxxxxx or whatever the f*** your name is, I see your pressed ass is here as usual. Is your fave not doing something interesting or what cause girl or boy, you stay in a Bey post.

  65. ~aMaZiNG.Lee~ December 19, 2010

Of course Beyonce’s a diva and soon to be if not already an Icon! Nicki Minaj is nowhere near a Diva. Sorry.

  66. Justice198 December 19, 2010

    @The Kiddz,

I believe you…MJB is already a legend. I mean she’s been out for what 15-18 years now. She takes the crown for the most songs in the upper tier on the R&B side and she has influenced a lot of artist.

I won’t argue with some of these list of artist whom we could push and support. Jill Scott, and the group are in a totally different lane then most of the other artist (and by group I mean, India Aire, Melanie, Marsha, Ledisi, etc) if those artist ever received mainstream success, they would truly shut s*** down. haha

Lauryn Hill actually has the Miseducation and the Unplugged double album out. Unplugged was all brand new material and even in her rapsy voice, she sounded better than a lot of other people that are out now…

But with this interview, I believe Mariah took the nice way out. She didn’t want to upset anyone or forget anyone so she simply mentioned her two friends in the game and I respect her for that.

It’s Christina. No other female in the past decade can command the stage with the vocal heights and prowess that she takes with her everytime. I don’t think that we’ve had a singer who have the pipes, soul and grit all at the same time since Etta James. She will always be underrated, but people will remember her for the right reasons. (Beautiful, Fighter, The Voice Within, Ain’t No Other Man and oh, that James Brown performance)

  71. John December 19, 2010

Mariah didn´t even bother answering the question in a serious way cos she knows there´s no f****** diva today that can come close to her diva status or Whitney´s. Here´s the definition of diva, article with which I totally agree:

5.) She reminds us of what a diva is, and why she’s the last one standing
What’s a diva? Lady Gaga is not a diva. Rihanna is not a diva. A diva is a larger-than-life personality, yes; a woman with charisma beyond measure, but more than anything, she’s a voice, and above all, THE voice. She doesn’t need fancy stage setups, props, pyrotechnics, elaborate costumes, or statement music videos. She doesn’t need to be racy or controversial or reference obscure art scenes and design influences. For the true diva, it’s just her and the microphone, standing on stage, singing her heart out and in turn making yours jump right out of your chest. Mariah is not by any means the only diva, but she’s definitely the only still-relevant, functional diva. Dear Whitney’s been in and out of rehab and reality television, while Cher and Celine have (for the most part) been hiding out in Vegas. Meanwhile, the young crop of power voices are busy running around with their heads chopped off trying to rule the word. By the way, Lady Gaga may have created a strong army of loyal “Little Monsters,” but Mariah Carey had given her fans a pet name way before it was cool, affectionately referring to her following as her “lambs.”

For now, though, Mariah Carey sits happily atop the Diva throne, reminding everyone that not many people can captivate and command an audience without moving an inch quite like her and that sometimes less is more. Except when it comes to glitter, bling and falsettos. In that case, more is always more.

@John: You said it all! When I read that article for the very first time I just thought that I couldn’t agree more. Nothing but the true 🙂

  73. John December 19, 2010

    @Ariana
haha I know. It´s just the truth

  74. Frankyblike December 19, 2010

everyone keeps talking about jeniffer hudson……..shouldnt she at least have a hit record to be considered a diva?

  75. Leo December 19, 2010

@John: That article is partly true but obviously written by a stan. It takes unecessary and incorrect shots at Whitney, Madonna and Celine. Let me show you:

    Whitney
has been out of rehab for 5yrs and has only been in one misguided reality show when obviously she was not well and being pimped by her husband.

Since then, her album, ‘I Look to You has sold 2.5mil cds ww and was #1 in the US and 8 other contries including Canada. it has sold more than Mariah’s MOIA and MCIIY put together with sales left over.

    Whitney’s tour has grossed over $43mil vs Mariah’s $9mil.
I’d say that places Whitney as more ‘relevant’ today than Mariah if we follow this author’s logic.

    Celine
took herself out of the game to play Vegas which has paid her handsomely and to have hits, she wasn’t forced out of music

    Madonna
may not sell well in the US, however, her Celebration GHs sold more WW than both of Mariah’s last 2 cds

so tellt hat author F^ck outta here with that mess. Big up Mariah yes but don’t diss the other true divas.

    Janet
Now, she of all the divas have a problem being relevant on the music scene with several back to back flop albums however, she has been busy wiht one hit move i. e Tyler Perry and one critically acclaimed flop movie, ‘Colored Girls’

Regarding mariah’s answer, she was being coy but Nicki won’t see 3 albums with success and one cd and a bunch of features does not make one a diva!

p.s the author failed to point out that a true diva doesn’t lip sync as extenstively as Mariah does but I digress…

  76. Leo December 19, 2010

    Jennifer Hudson – mini diva
she has one album that only went gold although promotion was cut short due to the death of her family
she is not known outside of the US and I suspect they will have trouble fining material for her that will cross over or be a big hit on r&b statins besides urban ac

Fantasia- mini diva- she is one of the few if only one besides Beyonce and Xtina who can truly command the stage and hold it with no gimmicks

Monica- a mini diva due to her longevity in the bizness but a boring a** performer

Brandy- I don’t know, she’s fallen off so bad I hesitate to even say mini diva, let’s see what her next album brings

Jazmine, Chrisette, Ledisi, Kelly- no ma’am, can sing but no divas

  77. carol December 19, 2010

Jennifer Hudson is not a diva, she can blow but boring stage presence, one album, I don’t think so.

    @ Rated X:

All TheKiddz asked you was to describe what, in YOUR opinion, makes someone an icon. Just a simple question. He didn’t attack you or tell you you don’t have a right to your opinion. Stans force their opinions on others, which he never does, or did in this instance. It’s stupid to just randomly call everyone a stan simply because they don’t agree with your opinion.

Jon Mclaughlin is a great great sanger, he does like alternative rock music. But, its real good. Listen to his version of Beyonces “Smash into you”, its called “Smack into you”. But to tell you da truth there arent really dat much “Divos” in the business of todays generation like it was in the past generation. WE no longer have Boyz II Mens’, Brian Mcknights, Tevin Campbells, Peabo Brysons, Sam Cookes, R.Kellys, we dont have that these days. WE have lil boys dat all wanna have baby voices and all singin bout the samething, with lil musical knowledge. Jus hot beats and good looks.

  85. Anthony The Great December 20, 2010

Her answer would’ve been taken more seriously if she hadn’t said Nicki Minaj. I mean I am a fan of the girl, but I don’t see her a DIVA just yet. I actually have a hard time seeing her as a diva.

jennifer Hudson and Fantasia are very talented, but they are not DIVAs. A diva not only has talent but has power and is influential on other artist.

Almost every new act coming out mentions Beyonce as an influence even some males.

She is talented. She is in command. She knows what she is doing.

And her name stays in everybody’s god damn mouth.

I don’t know why people are so hard on that girl. Just because she is not your typical ballad singer does not mean she is not a DIVA.

And BTW Mariah is not the first icon to point out Beyonce will have longevity. Patti Labelle, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, Prince, and plenty others has said she will have longevity in the industry.

But I think she could mentioned others such as Christina Aguilara(I Know) and Alicia Keys as well.

BTW how has Leona Lewis ever been a threat to Mariah Carey when MC came out years ahead of her. Sit down with that delusional nonsense.

  86. brandon December 20, 2010

im not suprised she said beyonce but nicki i am of course but nicki is like her lil sister/good friend so but if u look up diva it is a way to decribe a female singer which nicki is really a rapper so but if you use the other defention of a diva -like somebody who likes things done a certian way and is very in charge of their business then nicki is one and why do peopl;e keep saying nicki wont be out long u never know anyway nicki has done in a year what most dont accomplish in their whole career especially for a female rapper she had 19 hot 100 entiese and has a album that selling good trust me nicki will be big in the industry like a mogul JUST WATCH

But yes, I listened to “Smack Into You”, and he has a very good voice. Another mainstream male singer with a good voice I can think of is Bruno Mars. I really like that dude. And I agree that this generation is lacking in great male singers in the pop and R&B genre compared to the previous generations. Hell, we’re lacking in great singers, period. If we’re bypassing genre altogether, I’ll say another great singer is Matthew Bellamy of the rock band Muse. He sort of reminds me of Freddie Mercury.

Yea. Todays Singers dont possess for some reason, the VOICES that the singers from the past had, iono wat happened but alot of real singing seems to not be praised in todays generation. There are still cold-stone singers in the world but they’re not being recognized cuz They have their own path, own creations to bring to the world and the world simply dont want to hear it cuz all dey care about is hot beats and abs and a**. So we’re never tuned in on Ledisi, Raheem Devaughn, R. Kelly, Chrisette, Jill Scott, Erykah, Marsha, and so on. Its constantly Rihanna, Keri Hilson, Katy perry, Trey Songz, the dream and so on. And I dont care wat nobody says the only reason these ppl are so much in the light is cuz the trend of music right now. Music right now is wat the great depression was in the 1920s so hopefully Music bounces back right. Now I can Say Beyonce is holdin it done for the mainstream artist cuz she has sumin dat the otha mainstream artist dont and das musical knowledge along wit a killa voice and stage presence. She jus needs to get up on dat real musical knowlege and use it and not care about the trend of music of todays generation. Cuz shes capable of makin great music and bein versatile wit it.

I’m still holding out on hope that this decade things will change for the better, but if it doesn’t, then I might truly give up. Music needs to be about soul and authenticity, not about being the most radio-friendly. Most music on the radio nowadays all sound the same, really. Most of the artists are only popular because of good marketing, that is so true. However, no amount of good marketing cannot ensure a long career and a lasting legacy, so most of those artists will be irrelevant a few years from now.

And I saw that performance, and all I have to say is wow, those women KILLED it. Especially Ledisi. BTW, do you notice how much Marsha looks like Alicia Keys in that performance?

Marsha do resemble alicia now dat she has lost her weight, she looks good too. All 4 of dem ladies put a big ass smile on my face, Ive watched dat performance over and over again watchin lil phyllis hymans, nancy wilsons, and other great vocalist possess those women and show us Real Sangin/Presence is still alive. I think R. Kelly is tryna do dat for the male singers too with his new album. El Debarge is comin back, we jus the rest of the male singers to come on back too and sho these new comers wat da deal is.

O and Bruno Mars is a killa too. have u heard of Kings of leon?

  93. True Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Blue December 20, 2010

^^^ Yeah, I know Kings of Leon. I know Phyllis Hyman as well (granted, it’s only one song of hers I’m familiar with, “You Know How To Love Me”, but I discovered her by listening to old-school radio stations). I love listening to 60s, 70s, 80s,and 90s R&B and pop, as well as rock n roll. I also love music made before that era, like Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Lena Horne, The Andrews Sisters, just a lot of great singers from that era. The great thing was that back then, voice-altering technology didn’t exist, so labels could never fool the public with crappy singers. You had to actually possess talent in order to make it. It helped if you were good-looking too, but it wasn’t necessary as long as you were talented. Nowadays, it’s definitely image over talent. It doesn’t matter if you’re the most talented person in the world, if you don’t fit into a certain mold, most major labels will ignore you. That is sad. Although I kind of blame the public, too. They buy the crap, so obviously they’re helping keep those greedy labels in business. It’s a real shame more people don’t know about truly remarkable artists like Janelle Monáe.

You know I actually feel that Lloyd is an underrated singer. I saw him live about 2 years ago and he was performing at an apple store convention. He has a real nice voice (call me crazy but his voice kinda reminds me of MJ’s circa Thriller). He was pitchy in a few spots tho. And he can actually dance and sing live at the same time as well.

  105. ~aMaZiNG.Lee~ December 20, 2010

Somewhere in My Lifetime is an amazing record, ESPECIALLY when she performs it live. She’s somewhat like Beyonce, in that she brings life into the song EVEN more when she performs live, especially when she was did “Sophisticated Ladies” on Broadway . Her scatting just makes me DIE!

  106. Beyonce Owns Your Fav. December 20, 2010

  107. ~aMaZiNG.Lee~ December 20, 2010

Mario is extremely underrated! I’ve seen him live a couple of times and the dude has so much control over his voice! His “Turning Point” album was such a good album and was by far his best. I’ve seen LLoyd live once at my college’s homecoming and I was rather surprised. But his new song is my guilty pleasure! The key is too high, but I still like it, the harmonies during the verses, in particular!

  108. the kiddz December 20, 2010

Too much soul in one song. It would bring about the end of civilization. Lol

  113. Beyonce Owns Your Fav. December 20, 2010

    YAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSS!

Beyonce and Mariah Carey are a match made in heaven. I’ve sent Solange & Angie several tweets telling them to tell Beyonce to get in the studio w/ Mariah.

Alicia Keys and Beyonce could have been a classic as well if they didn’t do that corny Put it in a Love Song. I believe the only reason they didn’t do a ballad is because Alicia knew she would get outsung on her own album.

  116. True Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ Blue December 20, 2010

  117. the kiddz December 20, 2010

    @BOYF

Hmmm….I really don’t want her doing another musical, though. But, she should record a jazz album. I’ve been wanting one since Work It Out, but I can wait until her voice has really matured.

    @True Blue

Lol! Seriously, for someone who plays the DAMN PIANO; she shouldn’t be off-key in almost all her performances. It just doesn’t add up. I do enjoy her music and the fact that she does everything live. Her unplugged album? No Ma’am.

  118. the kiddz December 20, 2010

If anything, I want to send Beyonce back a generation. Then the true “Vocal Trinity” would be complete “Whitney, Mariah & Beyonce”. Lord knows how much I loathe Celine and her nasally projections. And Alicia even got upstaged on “Put it in a Love Song”, the hip-hop beat completely overcame her.

  119. ~aMaZiNG.Lee~ December 20, 2010

Forgivable in one, two performances, but when it happens almost regularly, you wonder what the hell is going on. And it seems to worsen as she gets older.

Beyonce and Rihanna(although vocally inferior) could make the club banger of the century.

Beyonce and Janelle Monae would be totally cool and unexpected.

    @ TheKiddz:

That’s actually really cool! It’s refreshing to hear people who have real career aspirations other than “be on reality TV and get famous”. Also cool that you play two instruments, something that I unfortunately never got to do. I was offered music lessons when I was younger, but turned them down. Now I look back on that decision with deep regret.

    @ Anthony The Great:

Completely agree. You don’t even realize how many people I run into who actually say Beyoncé can’t sing or isn’t that good of a singer. I think they’re just biased because of her genre, people who automatically classify any mainstream pop musician as being talentless. It’s the same thing with Lady Gaga.

    @ Info:

    Who’s Coko?

  132. lola December 20, 2010

Beyonce is extremely overrated! The only reason why Beyonce is considered the ultimate performer or an amazing singer is because of the hype around her. She has had the best manager and publicist. Not to mention she is basically the only performer who can actually sing and dance at the same time. The only performers we have are Beyonce, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga and Lady Gaga is new while Britney cannot sing at all and lip-syncs. I can’t stand Beyonce’s voice. She has such a common AFRICAN AMERICAN TONE. I’m black myself, and when I hear her sing, all I hear is any ol black woman singing. Her tone isn’t rich, unique, or chilling… her vocals are pretty good but she doesn’t have that type of voice that gives you goose bumps. Singers like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Christina Aguilera, Leona Lewis, and Toni Braxton sing much better than she does and have that special tone and powerhouse, soulful, and theatrical vocals. The divas of today would be

Amy Winehouse- The epitome of soul. She has that raw, classic soulful voice that you would hear from the 50’s, and sings straight from her heart. When she sings, she shows her pain, hurt, and anger. She paints a picture in your head when she’s singing.

Leona Lewis- has such a classically trained voice with crystal clear vocals, perfect breathes, and a nice smooth, sultry, emotional tone

Christina Aguilera- Has a very soulful and strong tone, with high pitched poppish vocals and beautiful vocal arrangements in all of her songs and sings with passion and emotion

Pink- Has a nice rock n roll raspy voice and sings effortlessly and with much depth

Jordin Sparks- Has potential to be even greater. Her voice is so clear and calm, beautiful, light, but powerful, and delightful

Janelle Monae- Is a perfect example of a music artist. She’s extremely creative an dedicated to music. She’s real and goes where no one else dares to go. Her voice is so pure and lovely.

O im the one that actually requested that video comparison! lol so I already know about that video

    @TRUE BLUE

Coko is the lead singer from the girl group SWV

  135. Anthony The Great December 20, 2010

    @True Blue

Me too, but most of the time I don’t even waste my time trying to inform the disbeliever that she can sing. But there have been a few times where I just showed them a clip of her singing on youtube, and they still say things like, “Oh she is Okay, but Alicia Keys and J. Hud out do her.”

  136. theman December 20, 2010

It does’nt matter what sold what ww. Mariahs E=m2 sold more than Whitneys I Look To You and had a number 1 and top 20 hot100 hit.

Whitney did’nt have a hot100 hit at all from her last album.

Whitney was selling out arenas/stadiums. Therefore since her tour was doing well it’s understandable that she would do well in those areas. Mariah was successful with her tour but just on a smaller scale. She sold out Madison Square Garden twice i believe, and Memoirs went gold, with yet another top10 hot100 hit.

So you could look at it both ways. Even tho sales were higher then TEOM’ sold 10 million ww with two number ones and a number 2 and went 6x platinum in the states, that was supposed to be Mariahs comeback even tho she did’nt really go anywhere to me.

So don’t even discuss the relevancy thing.

  137. the kiddz December 20, 2010

    @True Blue

Why, thank you! I learned Piano from my mom and I can somewhat sing (better than you know you, I might add) and I joined my school Orchestra in Middle School. What about you, what are your dreams and aspirations? And Coko was a member of SWV.

  138. theman December 20, 2010

I’m talking about sales in the US.

  139. theman December 20, 2010

    I expected W

  140. theman December 20, 2010

Also 2.5 million for Whitney is just ok, i expected atleast 4 million, people are acting as tho those are huge numbers. I know she did’nt have any major hits but still.

” I can’t stand Beyonce’s voice. She has such a common AFRICAN AMERICAN TONE. I’m black myself, and when I hear her sing, all I hear is any ol black woman singing.”

Just because you’re black doesn’t mean you can stereotype an entire race. You said it yourself, you can’t stand her voice. And that’s fine, but let’s not bring the race card into this, because you just sound ignorant.

  143. Anthony The Great December 20, 2010

    @Lola

And I guess because Christina Aguilara is white her voice is unique, because she also has your typical black voice

  144. Info December 20, 2010

    @LOLA

I have to disagree wit chu on that one. Beyonces voice is very unique from her earthy lows to her metallic highs, Beyonces whole voice is like a Trumpet, similar to Chakas. Who says a singers voice has to be rich and full like Whitney houstons or Mariahs. Arethas aint, Chakas aint, Cokos aint. Its plenty of female singers with metallic tones out there. And Beyonce is Def underrated as a Vocalist, the girl is versatile as hell and knows her voice inside and out. Comes up wit crazy harmonies and unique riffs and runs and has a great since of pitch. She’s actually a better Vocalist than Leona and Christina. Now singer, is opinion, that all comes down to that persons preference, wat they like. I would say beyonce is overexposed and is a underrated singer.

  145. Anthony The Great December 20, 2010

    @THEMAN

And Whitney’s album also wasn’t mainstream and current like Mariah.

I just realized something… you’re more talented than the suckers being played on the radio right now! LOL, I can imagine that it must irk you even more that they can get so successful.

    @ Lola:

Vocal types/tones are not specific to any race. You mentioned Christina, who the last I checked is white but has a more soulful tone commonly associated with black people. How come she doesn’t irk you?

Oh, and this dude wasn’t black, either: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FX_cixaPHbA

  148. Anthony The Great December 20, 2010

Beyonce is on TV One right now.

  149. Chariah Minaj December 20, 2010

MJB is not a new DIVA she has been on top of the Diva list for like 15yrs now, well established.. and mad talented.

Tasia is one of the best she just needs direction and promotion, have her albums and listen to her at least twice a day,

Nicki is talented, anybody who says otherwise must be deaf dumb.
B = Meh sick of her yelling at me on her records and not really saying much.. granted she is talented she needs to sing more and less shouting.

J-hud needs to control those pipes..she’s def too talented to waste it.

  150. BENJAMIN December 20, 2010

Minaj will not last long like these artists are saying, I promise you. When these other female mcs get off their fat asses and back in the studio, it will be game time. Minaj is like a spur-of-the-moment/filler female mc. The gimmicks, costumes, etc. will get boring and outdated. I just don’t see it with her, but perfect timing to capitalize on quick-momentary success though. Get that money while you can.

  151. John December 20, 2010

The thing is Mariah chose to name two of her friends and that´s it. It was an irrelevant interview.
I´m with the person who said Beyonce´s voice is not unique and doesn´t blow your mind like Mariah, whitney, celine and others do or did. She is very good and has control but is nowhere near those divas. For example Xtina is much more unique, but her screaming is just awful. And Celine´s voice went too nasal years ago but in the 90´s it was out of this world, not that versatile as Mariah´s or Whitney´s though. The thing is nowadays there is no mainstream diva with that total package voice like Mariah, Whitney or Celine. And among the 3 Mariah is now the more relevant even if some people don´t like it. Why? Cos she is still doing great music, is the more functional among those 3 now. It doesn´t make her better or something, it is simply a fact. Whitney and Celine will forever be legends no matter what too.

  152. taji December 20, 2010

Mariah is NOT the more relevant out of the 5 divas. She is the most visible as she always has to have a product out there but her sale have been declining for the last 3 years. Whitney chooses not to be out there as she is a semi-recluse but when she steps out she COMMANDS attention. WAtch BET Celebration of Gospel on Jan 30 2011 to see how the crowd reacts to her.

That does not happen to an ‘irrelevant’ artist and I’d bet you money that mariah wouldnot get the same response.

Having said that I’d say that Celine would be the most relevant one of of all the 5 in respect to getting airplay etc but I bet if she toured, she’d make more except than Madonna.

Worldwide, the relevant ones right now are Madonna and then Whitney. Janet has no relevancy WW see how her last 3 albums ddid, Mariah’s last albums all flopped WW.

Having said that , those 5 ledgends/divas are irreplaceable. No one and I mean no one will achieve what they did and that includes Beyonce.

  153. marv December 20, 2010

So far the new breed of divas that im pretty sure will follow the footsteps of our divas would be beyonce and lady gaga. but sorry folks, i dont see a soul that will be the next Mariah, Celine or Whitney.

  154. Justice198 December 20, 2010

I see the Beyonce fans come out in full force to attack, smh.

I, myself, get that Beyonce is truly a diva. There is no question about it. So I don’t think there should be much talk about it though. The girl is making sure she ends up as an icon. She knows what she is doing.

When I think of diva, I think of vocals, I think of stage presence, I think of attitude.

Pink, Christina, Fantasia- they have all had their share of drama mixed with amazing performances and great vocals.

Alot of other singers are high up there too with the vocals and stage presence but stay away from the dramatic (the whole neo-soul group for instance). I will still give them props no matter who tells me that Beyonce or Gaga or Mariah or whoever are the singers of this generation. There IS room for more than one leader in music.

  155. PedroL December 20, 2010

I get the cynicism ….they want her to retire 🙁
