VH1 has completed its quest to crown ‘the ultimate diva’ (based on fan votes) by unveiling its list of the 100 greatest women of music history. The survey comes as their second – the first saw acts Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner take the number 1 and 2 spots respectively while acts like Madonna and Billie Holiday filled out the top 10.
With 6 categories – “All Time”, “90s”, “80s”, “Pop”, “Rock”, and “Hip Hop/R&B” – VH1 has introduced a more comprehensive compilation of divas to include, unlike their original survey, more contemporary performers (i.e. Rihanna, Beyonce, Lady Gaga, etc) and base it on achievements in the past 20 years. Sure to get tongues wagging, the list’s first 20 are set for a televised unveil on tonight’s premiere episode of the five night countdown at 10pm Eastern.

Mariah has never overshadowed Madonna, at the time when Mariah was getting big, Madonna was causing controversy with “Erotica” and the “SEX” book, Madonna is the most constant female singer of all times, she managed herself to stay relevant in the 90′s despite her voice with the invasion of all the biggest voices Whitney, Mariah, Celine ect.. then the teen Pop sensation at the end of the 90′s that overshadows Mariah and other Legends, once again she maintained her name in the Game, making Britney and Christina her followers, now Gaga and once again at the Super Bowl 2012 she shows the world that she is light years ahead of everyone else despite not being the most talented, it has merit.

Madonna really don’t deserve a #1 spot on this list. She’s more of a controversial figure that rely on shock value and gimmicks than a talented artists. There’s so many ways you can display talent, but Madonna had more of a knack for stunning everyone. I think alot of her peers had consistent success (artistically speaking) , where they evolved. Madonna really peaked early in her career (musically), but remained relevant with her stunts throughout the decades. I’d definitely place Whitney, Janet and Mariah ahead of her. I’m glad that Bey placed higher than any of her peers from the 00′s, that makes a lot of sense. I wish Toni, Brandy and Lauryn were alot higher. Adele and Lady Gaga should not be in the top 10.

The thing is Madonna became relevant BEFORE the other top contenders on the list. She ushered Pop into the mainstream. She is NOT the most talented on the list but arguably has the best combination of success, popularity at her peak, longevity, and influence on others. She is the first female artist that I became a fan of at a young age. She has so many unforgettable hit pop songs that stood the test of time. That’s why I can’t argue with her placement.

This is just a weird list. Madonna makes sense being #1, no one touches her success and fame. Celine and Whitney should both be higher though, because their sales aren’t far behind hers. For “impact” reasons, I would add Barbara Streisand and Aretha Franklin to top top 10. Janet, Gaga, Mariah, Adele, Christina and Pink don’t belong in the top 10 at all, although Pink in the top 20 I wouldn’t have a problem with. And I can’t believe Ke$ha, Miley Cyrus and Pussy Cat Dolls are even on this list period. All in all, this list was voted on by too many kids.

I don’t get the shade at all. In the past couple of years, I’ve seen lists that are three times as ridiculous as this one. VH1′s list makes sense, whether you like it or not. I don’t care if your faves are not high enough, but the list is partly accurate, which is more than can be said for most polls lately. Yes, I disagree with some of the artists that ranked very high, but it’s only natural to have less than 100 women on your radar, so of course people wouldn’t agree with every single detail of the list…
Anyway, happy about Christina being in the top 10. She deserved a bit higher imo, but it’s still enough recognition. And I’m also very happy about Aaliyah being in the top 50. She hasn’t released any new music for 11 years, yet she’s still rocking those lists. I wish she didn’t have to go that soon, she had an AMAZING career ahead of her and judging by the masterpiece that was her self-titled album, she had A LOOOT to give…R.I.P.

Reading these comments is hilarious. It just goes to show that people dont’ read or know anything about music.
This list was compiled over the past 20 years in music, not just the last 10. And fans voted, Vh1 didn’t make the list on their own. So to say Janet, Whitney, Mariah and Madonna don’t belong in the Top 5 is RIDICULOUS. These women are the reason that all these other ladies have a list to be on. Whether they’ve had a hit song in the past 5 years doesn’t matter because their relevancy hasn’t faded. Sales figures and #1 songs will fade as they get older, as it did with the greats before them (Aretha, Patti, Diana, Tina, etc). But their impact on the world is still felt today in all the artists they inspired who are on the list.

i will say though, i dont think the list is based solely on fan votes. if it were, i really think katy perry, gaga and definitely Britney would’ve have ranked higher. u know how those Britney fans go hard for her on polls. no offense but Britney has always been more popular than Christina so for Chrsitna to rank above Britney, it couldn’t have been based on votes alone
and i understand legends not placing so high as well, the list mainly captures he music scene of the last 2 decades so no sweat

This list is almost like a slap in the fast to most of these women… I can’t even believe Ke$ha is on this list & her high ranking & then Miley Cyrus… I mean what about Ciara, she’s made strides in her career, what little they have. This list is yet another attempt. But I guess to each its own. The list is still a remarkable step in the right direction. There is too much fussing when it comes to lists like these.

so whitney houstons bodyguard album is the highest selling album with over 40 million which kills everybody else in the top 10 with all of their albums from 1990 to now and she isnt number one???
some of it is understanable like bey but gaga hasnt sold anywhere near what the rest of the top 10 sold so i dont know why she is there bey makes sense she put in work over those years oh!!! and how is dc not top 20 along with the spice girls they sold way more then the others and kesha has sold 3 million!!! and she is higher than cher???? i cant with this list………
