Winning: Michelle Williams Signs New Gospel Record Deal

Published: Thursday 7th Jun 2012 by Sam

After touring the US with critically acclaimed stints in plays ‘Chicago’ and ‘What My Husband Doesn’t Know’, Destiny’s Child graduate Michelle Williams is returning to music. Not just any music, no.

The 31 year old is re-embracing her first love of Gospel and has teamed with a juggernaut in that field to power to her new material.

Details after the jump…

Set for release next January, Williams’ comeback album will be released via Light Records (with distribution via eOne) who she recently inked a deal with.

Speaking on the venture James Robinson, President of Light Records, said in a statement:

“It’s an honor to work with an icon like Michelle Williams and her team. As a fan of her other two inspirational projects, I was drawn to Michelle’s comfort, confidence and genuineness. With her pure heart for God and people, our goal is to continue her brand of love, faith and encouragement through song.”

…with Williams adding:

“I am very excited to partner with Light/eOne. I am honored to follow in the footsteps of Light Record legends, THE WINANS and ANDRAE CROUCH.  When I was a little girl I would listen to them and to be on the same label they once were is amazing! Light/eOne has been very supportive of my vision to inspire and give hope through my music.”

Following the formal announcement, the ‘Do You Know’ singer beamed on Twitter: I’m so excited about this new venture! I’ve accepted what my purpose is….I have peace about it! Discover your purpose luvz!!

For those who don’t know Michelle’s first two albums Heart to Yours and Do You Know charted at #1 and #2 on the Billboard Gospel album chart in 2002 and 2004 respectively.

Heart to Yours stayed on the chart for a total of 42 weeks before making the year-end chart at #6 and was the best-selling gospel album of the year.

Do You Know finished at #25 on the year-end chart.

Both albums were well received by critics (Allmusic gave Heart to Yours 4/5 and Do You Know 3.5/5)

      EXACTLY!!!

I STILL FEEL AS IF DYK WAS HER BEST ALBUM PERIOD!!

I WILL SAY I’M A LITTLE SAD THAT WE WON’T GET ANOTHER POP ALBUM…. THIS TIME AROUND I WAS HOPING FOR A R&B SOUL ALBUM

BUT EITHER WAY I’M FINE WITH WHAT SHE DOES

Then of course in 2008 she released her first pop album Unexpected, which despite great critical reviews, didn’t get a quarter of the commercial success it deserved.

Still, Unexpected produced “We Break the Dawn” (#4 US Dance, #47 UK, #38 Hungary) and “The Greatest” (#1 US Dance), which was listed at #39 on Billboard’s DECADE-END dance chart, just behind “Lose My Breath” ironically.

Hope Gospel is her niche and she finally gets some great success. But is it me or does Michelle look older/stressed?

  5. Bitchplease June 7, 2012

YES SO HAPPY..I SAID SHE NEEDS TO BE THE GOSPEL ARTIST, BEYONCE BE THE POP ARTIST, LETOYA LUCKETT BE THE PURE SOUL AND RNB ARTIST..AND KELLY BE THE HIPHOP AND RNB ARTIST.. Michelle Willlams can be a legendary Gospel singer. Her gospel albums were really successful, praized by critcs and fans.

  9. mobwife June 7, 2012

Good she should return to her Gospel roots! Congrats and I can’t wait to hear new material from her.

  10. Blanco June 7, 2012

I love Michelle. I wish she would just make up her mind and stick with it…first you wanna do gospel, then you wanna do dance/pop…now she wants to go back to gospel. I like her in both genres but I’m sure her audience is getting confused…like where do you want to be

  11. I Judge Flops June 7, 2012

    LMFAOOOO

    BURN IN HELL GIRL

    JK

But seriously this girl is a HEATHEN she always going from gospel to pop and BACK.. I swear if her “Unexpected” album wouldn’t sold well she wouldn’t be worried about gospel. This girl is A MESS.

    HEATHEN HEATHEN HEATHEN

What is wrong with her singing pop exactly?
Shes not promoting drugs s** and alcohol with her pop music sooo…

  12. 80s Baby June 7, 2012

I think this is great news for Michelle. I wish she’d never left gospel in the first place, because this makes her look kinda wishy washy. I mean if her pop songs had performed well would she be returning to gospel? However, I’ll give her the benefit of the doubt that she just had a little soul searching to do and her search took her back to her roots.

I hope her new album goes to number 1, as well as Kelly’s, and I hope Beyonce’s new album produces at least one number 1 hit on the Hot 100. Then I want a Destiny’s Child reunion in 2013!!!

    • lyric commander lee June 8, 2012

i was with u up until the dc3 reunion – thats doesnt need to happed for atlest another ten yerars – during thier 40s after their solo careers have been established and cemented

  13. Bobby June 7, 2012

I totally disagree about it making her appear “wishy-washy”. Why should she be subjected to one genre when she is totally capable of delivering in more than one? Her pop music is great, as is her gospel music. It isn’t as though her pop music promotes everything the bible doesn’t. (This is coming from someone who is not of any certain faith too)

Good for Michelle .. I saw a video of her on TMZ after Beyonce’s Revel Concert and she was looking SMOKING. Good for all these DC girl’s getting they groove on. Go B, Go Kel, Go Michelle, Go LeToya! I c u allll! 🙂

  17. Cruella De Vil June 8, 2012

WHY DOES SHE LOOK LIKE 50CENT IN THIS PIC? LOOOL

  18. MusicBoy June 8, 2012

I’m glad she’s going back to gospel. Everyone has a music style that is their niche and Gospel is Michelle’s.

If only Fantasia would realize Gospel is her niche, she would be very successful as well.

  19. JohnVidal(RIP Whitney-truegreat) June 8, 2012

Why is it that any f****** thing the Destiny´s Child members do is so big and important in Sam´s eyes????????????????? When two of them are flops and the other one is not half as big and talented as Sam wants to make it seem??
The 3 girls are pretty average, being Beyonce at least such an energetic performer.
I have nothing against them so please no need to reply to my comment. i just wanted to say the obvious. Sam is a Destiny´s Child lover (don´t ask me why if he wants to be a respected site) and he just shades every other act on music business. That´s it

    • lyric commander lee June 8, 2012

soooo why do u come to his blog knowing this leave a comment. every person has thier fav and will rep for them – realize and move on

  20. stan June 8, 2012

i personally prefer the “unexpected” michelle, but either way, i’m glad she’s working on new music. it’s been a while.

  21. lyric commander lee June 8, 2012

YASSSSSS! I have been saying this from day 1 that Michelle should have never left gospel. That is where her unique voice dominates and she can really soar – although Unexpected was good, she is no way a dance diva. Had she stuck with gospel, she couldve have probably been on album 5 or 6 right now performing for the many BET Gospel programs and award shows setting her apart from her bandmates. Better late that never tho. Michelle is holding down gospel (hopefully) while kelly is reviving rnb and Bey is doing pop. SOunds like the girls are going in! Im enjoying the veiw – ROWLDAWG 4 LIFE BIOTHCES!
