Selena Gomez Responds To Lorde Criticism: ‘It’s Not Feminism If You’re Tearing Down Other Artists’

Published: Friday 11th Oct 2013 by David

It may have taken her a while, but Selena Gomez has finally responded to comments made by Pop ‘Royal’ Lorde, who hit out at the star in an interview available to read here.

Adding fuel to the criticism that already surrounds Selena and her involvement- or lack of it- in crafting her own messages, Lorde‘s estimation of Selena’s influence on young girls saw the star forced to address her during an interview with Hot 99.5.

What the ‘Come & Get It’ singer had to say for herself?

SIT DOWN CHOLA! Neither you or lorde opinion matters…

    • Selenator October 11, 2013

Mad cause Selena didn’t need to take off her clothes for a multi platinum top 10 hit or to sell out a worldwide arena tour.

      • SLAY ME GODNIKA (ASBEENISH) October 12, 2013

Mad that Stars Dance will never get a gold plaque?

  4. BeyWhoUWanna October 11, 2013

I didn’t know she was that articulate.

  5. CandyWarhol October 11, 2013

Lorde was right. It wouldn’t be bad if Selena wrote the song because she has a right to be objectified by men if she wants to. The problem is that she doesn’t have any control of her music and is literally spreading a message that’s unhealthy for her audience, who are little kids.

    • Selenator October 11, 2013

She has control over her music though. She co-wrote all the bonus tracks for Stars Dance and was in control of the album’s direction and sound. She wasn’t in her previous albums cause she would record songs on her days off from acting. People don’t get that music is a hobby for her and her main focus is acting.

  6. Ariana’sGrand October 11, 2013

Selena is such a sweetheart, but she does need to write more.

    • Savannah October 11, 2013

Does Ariana write? No shade, just asking.

  7. An0thrDream October 11, 2013

Selena is cute, but she reminds me too much of rihanna, a talentless drone manufactured by the wealth of a top Noche label

  12. BEYHIVE_MINAJ October 11, 2013

She didn’t tear you down-She spoke the truth. Your fan base is full of 15- aged kids. The message you are sending to your audience is that you have become a s** kitten-no different from miley, only that you are softer. If she was talking mad s*** and trying to start beef-that would be tearing you down. Get it together girl…

  13. dustin October 11, 2013

lol it really took her all this time to come up with that gem of wisdom?

    girl is DENSE

  14. Lovebird (Prism – 10.22.13) October 11, 2013

  15. Lovebird (Prism – 10.22.13) October 11, 2013

Caca sold 1.2 million by selling her s***** disc for $0.99, Katy made more with just Roar which retailed at $1.29, Here’s your seat _/

  16. wrecking your favs career October 11, 2013

  19. Lovebird (Prism – 10.22.13) October 11, 2013

And yet your fav went bankrupt on her first tour. Katy would never.

  20. cake like lady gaga October 11, 2013

And yet The Born This Way Ball was the second highest grossing tour for 2012,

    WHEN WILL KATY??????????

  21. Rosie October 11, 2013

Selena didn’t lie though about feminism. Borde needs to put her Intro To Women’s Studies book down because she is making herself look like a dumbass. People like her are why no one likes feminists.

  22. Touché October 11, 2013

Everyone has a right to give their opinion but Lorde is to new to the industry to be analyzing the actions of other artists. She really needs to just worry about herself.

  23. IKNOWTHETRUTH October 11, 2013

Two irrelevant chicks going at it. Neither of them are really doing anything life changing for the music scene at this point. But, Selena does have a point. If you’re a feminist, you unite with other females to run the world. Lorde is doing exactly what she stands against, bringing another woman down. So, men can’t do it but women who are “feminists” can and it’s okay? No. Girl bye. Shut up and sing. Or do what you can at least.

  24. Tisha October 11, 2013

Poor child doesn’t know what feminism is considering she needed Justin Bieber to make her music career, and even that didn’t work out for her.

If you telling a man when he’s ready to come and get it then you’re basically saying you’ll be waiting because you ain’t going anywhere.

    • Selenator October 11, 2013

Selena’s most successful album to date was released back when Justin was still on YouTube. Tried it.

  25. Tisha October 11, 2013

Ugh, so many people have no clue what feminism is about on these boards.

    • B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 11, 2013

Clueless. Feminism is not about the blind support of women by other women (or men, since they can be feminist too). Feminism involves criticism. It does not involve unconditional support because you both share the same s** organs. UGH!!!!

Anyway, Lorde gave an opinion. No one was torn down.

      • Tisha October 12, 2013

        THANK YOU!

Woo chile I can breath thanking my stars someone gets it!

These people were depressing the hell out of me.

    • B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 12, 2013

There are a few of us on this site who get it. PLEASE don’t leave! LOL!

  26. #IndustryPussy October 11, 2013

someone messed up and confused this b****. Selena baby, artist- you are not… (barely bright) Pop star- you are…. you, Bieber and Swifty CANNOT FATHOM ARTISTRY UNTIL THE DAYS EACH OF YOU CREATE YOUR OWN MUSIC INSTEAD OF HAND PICKING BEATS & LYRICS FROM YOUR LABEL STAFF…..

    • #IndustryPussy October 11, 2013

and honestly, you can barely sing or dance to being with so you might as well just STAPH!

    • Selenator October 11, 2013

Taylor and Bieber write their own songs dumb b****. Taylor is known most for her songwriting.

    • NT October 11, 2013

But Taylor Swift actually writes the majority of her music about her various relationships though…

  27. Selenator October 11, 2013

TGJ if you’re going to report on Selena please do the research. She co-wrote all the bonus tracks off Stars Dance and has co-wrote songs off her previous albums. She was in complete control of the sound and direction of Stars Dance. Everyone knows acting comes before music which is why she doesn’t write most of her material. Critics understand which is why there is no “criticism” about her involvement in music as you claim.

I’m glad Selena defended herself against Slorde’s confused idea of feminism. She also replaced the Royals cover on her tour for Katy Perry’s Roar, a much better song tbh. She is a class act.

  28. B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 11, 2013

Lorde’s feminism is in no way “confused’ because she stated why Selena’s “Come & Get It” may be problematic. In fact, Lorde’s critique of that song is very much in line with feminist ethics. I think you, and Selena, may not know what feminism is. I don’t say that to mean.

By the way, calling Lorde “Slorde” does very little to bring sympathy to Selena. In fact, it makes your critique of Lorde’s “feminism” even less convincing. Think about it.

  29. Lucy October 11, 2013

This is so stupid, in the original interview Lorde said that she said she loved the song Come and get It, however she just said that she couldn’t stand its message, especially since it was being marketed at young girls. And if people had bothered to listen to the original interview that would of seen that, and that she also used Robin Thicke as an example. She concluding that in most instances with pop music at the moment, you have to put aside any problems you have lyrically and just enjoy the music on a sonic level, because sexism and anti-feminism is common place in the music industry at the moment. So in no way was she tearing down Selena, but rather critiquing the music industry at large.

Secondly i am not sure that Selena fully understands the concepts of feminism, just because Lorde is a female does not mean that it is anti-feminist to critique the message being given in a song by a female artist. Because that would be a double standard which is exactly what feminism is trying to prevent.

    • B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 11, 2013

Finally, someone who posts on TGJ who understands what feminism is. Thank you!

  30. Lucy October 11, 2013

Oh and i love the comment Selena Co-wrote all of the bonus tracks in her album. Its basically saying that the songs Selena writes were not good enough to make the initial album cut.

    • B**** I Can’t Even Spell Welfare October 11, 2013

Isn’t that hilarious?! Like the fact that co-wrote her bonus tracks somehow makes her an artist.

Oh, I forgot. According to @SELENATOR, music is only something she does part-time. Uh yeah, we can tell.
