Billboard’s planned Prince tribute with Madonna has not impressed certain corners of the late singer’s fanbase.
The Pop queen has been tapped to perform at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards and, as at writing, she’s the only act enlisted for the “unmissable” tribute at the May 22nd ceremony.
Angered, a supporter of the Purple one started a petition demanding an amendment to the mono Madge line-up. And it’s gaining traction.

I’m not feeling Madonna headlining, much less, carrying the WHOLE tribute. It doesn’t make sense. She seems an odd and non organic choice.

I get why Madonna was selected; Michael, Prince, Whitney and Madonna were the heavy hitters of the 80’s. And she’s last surviving icon, so why not have another icon tribute another icon. And I don’t think Madonna would do anything to chastise Prince’s legacy. From my understanding they were friends and he has attend her concerts and vice versa and they worked together on her album Like A Prayer. So yeah they were clearly friends. However it would be nice if the The Revolution (Prince’s band) and Sheila E. all came together in addition to Madonna and did something to together. But whatever they do they just need to make sure it’s all females singing his song because Prince has made it known he does not like men singing his song.
But Madonna cannot sing thats why. If we have to hear Princes songs sung on a major platform can it at least be from people who can sing.

Lol, mess. I understand the concern because I can’t imagine Madge being the only artist to tribute Prince at the Billboard Awards. However, she was his peer and alongside him, MJ, Whitney and Janet, defined Pop music for the 80s so it does make sense that she’d be asked to pay tribute. Two out of the aforementioned are dead and the other one doesn’t really mess with the industry anymore. Like a few have mentioned, actually get those who were like family to Prince and actually admired. I’m talking Sheila E, Morris Day, Chaka Khan, Janelle Monae, Beyoncé and those who are very much inspired by him and would treat covering his songs with care like D’Angelo and Maxwell.

I know they were friends and collaborated once on her Like A Prayer album, but when you think of Prince and his musical influence, Madonna is not the first name to come to mind. Alicia Keys covered How Come You Don’t Call Me, Chaka Khan covered I Feel For You, Sinead O’Connor covered Nothing Compares 2 U, Meli’sa Morgan covered Do Me Baby, Mariah Carey covered The Beautiful Ones with Dru Hill, Cyndi Lauper covered When U Were Mine. He wrote Yo Mister for Patti LaBelle, The Glamorous Life for Sheila E., Sugar Walls for Sheena Easton, as well as dueted with her on his hit U Got the Look, Manic Monday for The Bangles, S** Shooter for Apollonia 6. All of these ladies are still among us and it would be dope that they would perform the hits they covered or he wrote for them. Madonna’s Love Song, her duet with Prince, was not even released as a single, so it will be interesting to see what she performs.

Madonna cannot sing and put on a real tribute music wise like Gaga has showed she can, so I understand this.
But it is also true that there´s something beautiful and special about it being Madonna, as this big (bigger than any of your favorites are now, if you don´t want to admit that it´s just your own delusion) artist and icon that debuted in the 90s and slayed next to Prince, Whitney, Michael, U2 and so on (WOW it´s incredible to see the decline, those names compared to what we have now lol) and she is a little bit like the last one in many senses.
Yes someone like Janelle Monae, someone incredibly talented, would be a better fit, but I think we´ll get more of that in other upcoming shows.

Madonna is going to be amazing, she always is! I’m glad they chose an iconic 80’s pop star to pay tribute to him.
After all, just recently, Prince arranged a special performance for Madonna when she was in his hometown during her Rebel Heart Tour.
I’m sure there will be a collaboration of other performers who were influenced by Prince and his music, but say what you will about Madonna, she is the highest grossing pop star in the world and has broken every record in the industry….it’s going to be a great spectacle!!
