As we reported here, John Legend‘s ‘Darkness & Light,’ released December 2nd, was greeted with critical acclaim from some of music’s most respected critics. Unfortunately, that fanfare was not echoed commercially.
24 hours after its premiere, industry analysts predicted the set – featuring the hit ‘Love Me Now’ – would land the crooner his lowest first week sales to date. And, despite a number of promotional appearances in support of the project to turn the tide, it appears analysts were right.
Forecasted to move 35,000-45,000, tuck in to find out exactly where Mr. Legend’s latest landed on the week’s refreshed chart:
First Week Sales: 38,900 SPS
Physical Sales: 26, 300
Debut Placement: #14
Not only do the figures above give Legend his lowest first week sales to date, they also grant him his lowest first week placement on the Billboard 200.

Darkness and light is an amazing piece of art and i think it’s the first time i care that much for one of his album… the lack of promo tho
John has literally been on everything to promote the album. Good Morning America, big boy, breakfast club, watch what happens live, Jimmy Fallon, Kimmel, Trevor Noah, about be in LaLa Land. lol it’s not about real vocals anymore. It’s about Bryson tillers, Tory Lanez, Drake and Migos right now.
I know artist are supposed to grow, but can he go back to his , “were just ordinary people” days

Nah but pure sales have been pretty decent for the last few weeks. He should’ve done a lot better. He should have promoted his album a lot more. Maybe a few of his singles will catch on.
With pure sales alone he still would have debuted at this position.
That’s what happens when you think just because you collab with Meghan Waists-Trainor that you’re gonna be backed by a certain persuasion. Same happened to Usher. You lose your audience that way. Stick to your roots.
Meagan trainor didn’t make him relevant again it was All of me that even got this new generation talking and let’s face it he had the robin thicke curse – drop a successful single and ride the wave for his next album
Sorry but he didn’t blow up in mainstream until “All Of Me” was released. His collabo with Megan Trainor had nothing to do with anything.

Omg y’all acting like he was this huge star before . He was never a mainstream star it was after all of me that he became mainstream other than that he was just an artist or a singer .
Who cares if the album didn’t do that well? People don’t know real music anymore and people just download it for free. It was a great album, congrats John!
John will be just fine. His last album opened with extremely low numbers & chart placement, then he had his breakout hit ‘All Of Me’, and his album was certified Gold at the end of it all. His current single has cracked the top 5 on the R&B charts, the top 10 on the R&B/Hip Hop charts, and has jumped to #23 on the Hot 100. John has never been a huge out-the-box seller, his albums sell over time.
Still one of the best albums released this year. Goes to show… sales don’t equate to quality
