‘Look What You Made Me Do,’ the first single from Swift’s forthcoming album, ‘Reputation,’ was just released Friday (August 25th) and, in less than 24 hours, shot to the top of iTunes sales charts. Its accompanying lyric video on Youtube garnered a whopping 19 million views in that same timeframe (shattering the record previously held by The Chainsmokers’ song ‘Something Just Like This’).
As if that’s not enough, the tune’s official music video – unveiled at last night’s MTV VMAs – has NOT been on VEVO for a full 24 hours and has already unseated the previous record-holder, Adele. As you may recall, Addy’s 2015 comeback hit, ‘Hello,’ earned a jaw-dropping 27.7 million views its first full day of availability on VEVO.
As of time reported, Taylor is sitting at 29.8 million.
P.S. – #LWYMMD also added Spotify records to its lengthy resume of carnage as well. Ed Sheeran‘s ‘Shape of You’ scribbled its name in history books back in March when it nabbed an impressive 6.8 million listens on the streaming giant in just 24 hours.
Taylor’s latest earned over 10 million in the same timeframe. Ay yi yi!

Adele´s success is way more real and impacting anyway. A Vevo record or a streaming record cannot compare to MONUMENTAL wordwide sales. Everywhere. Adele is not a visual artist to begin with. Taylor is, and would be nothing without smoke and mirrors. Because it sure isn´t due to this song (or pretty much any single by her) being great.

I understand what you’re saying, TRUST ME…but music certainly has its phases…Whitney Houston’s self-titled debut album is the blueprint for everything Mariah, Celine and now Adele are doing and have done…most artists don’t sell in a CAREER what Whitney sold on ONE album..they just don’t lol…Whitney’s The Bodyguard and Michael’s Thriller (the blueprint for every male solo artist since) are the top selling male and female albums worldwide EVER…I understand exactly what you’re saying, but remember…when BLACK artists get the right machine behind them like Taylor has now, we sell like NO ONE HAS EVER IN THE HISTORY OF MUSIC…when Madonna was crafting her sophomore album, she wanted to sell like Thriller…get the respect of Prince and Michael…remember that! And when Michael and Quincy were crafting Thriller, they combined all the genres blacks created in the first place! Tina Turner got the right machine behind her and sold 25 million copies of Private Dancer…and the music was SUBLIME
I agree with everything you said but just want to add that since the days of Whitney and Michael the population (prospect-able consumers) has more than quadrupled so there Whitney and Michael accomplished those record-breaking numbers with only a fraction of the number music consumers available today.
Think about it from a karma / longetivity standpoing. If an artist puts out crap music (and gets away with selling the ish) it will bite them in the @zz come album sales and future single sales time. Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Madonna (in her prime), Celine (in her prime), Whitney (in her prime) etc would NEVER put out garbage like that and use gimmicks to sell it. Taylor is taking advantage of the fact that the new generation of music listeners do not know anything about quality music but forgetting about the fact the new generation of music listeners do not really spend a lot of cash on music like old-school music consumers did. In todays world you have to appease new and old in order to make huge profits.

I am not trying to be shady by any means but please educate me on how people like you tally sales these days. Is it by the actual dollar amount or just the amount of units sold (regardless of price)? I’m old-school and I look at sales based on dollar amount but things have changed drastically (I guess). Anybody can be #1 “sales-wise” if they have the right label and investors behind them but whatever happened to return on investment?????? As an investor, I would not back Taylor’s new rubbish music if someone had a gun to my head because I know I would not see the longevity (royalty money) a year from now or any year in the future. As a music consumer you too are an investor (unintentionally) so whatever amount ($0.50 cents to $10 bucks) you invest in her music it has zero investment value.

She is going to have #1 song come next week. To be honest Taylor is another one of these bland artists who get by off of mediocre material and industry politics as wholesome pop star. Her album will sale at least go platinum first week like her previous three. But it does not change my thoughts on Taylor at all. But I do respect that she can still sell amazing numbers after over a decade into her career.
