Grammy Awards 2008 Coverage

The 50th Annual Grammy Awards took place tonight at Los Angeles’ Staples Center. Muisc’s biggest stars were out in full force for the industry’s most prestigous event. Check out performances from the show below, as well as That Grape Juice’s take on them afterward:

The performances were a mixed bag for me:

Standouts IMO were Kanye West; I really moved by his performance of ‘Stronger’ and ‘Dear Mama’. I also was impressed by Amy Winehouse; clearly in good spirits, Amy showed why she is considered one of the best things to happen to the music industry. Alicia showed out at the end with her great performance of ‘No One’.

The highlight of the Beyonce / Tina performance, for me, was the lip synched intro. Now before the stans jump out at me lol, I respect both immensely for their contributions to the industry and would consider myself fans of them both, however the performance sounded a lot better on paper. I can’t put my finger on why, but I was left distinctly underwhelmed.

Passable / so-so performances included Rihanna and Fergie; although the latter surprised me with her live vocals.

Where the hell was much-speculated Janet Jackson performance? Michael too, for that matter. With both dropping albums in the coming weeks, a serious promo opportunity has been blown.

All in all, I can’t help but be left with a salty taste in my mouth after tonight’s show. Definitely a case of the show not matching up to the hype that preceded it.

What do you think of the performances?
