Mariah’s ‘Bye Bye’ Tanking

Published: Tuesday 24th Jun 2008 by Sam
Mariah's 'Bye Bye' Tanking It would that seem in between the quickie marriage to Nick Cannon, questionable live performances etc, Mariah Carey’s ‘E=MC²’ is in relative free-fall. Though the set has sold over a million copies since its release back in April, things aren’t looking too good for the LP at present.

Currently sitting at #21 on the Billboard 200, the album’s second single ‘Bye Bye’ only peaked at #19 on the Hot 100, and, even with a physical release this week, isn’t even top 40 in the UK mid week charts.
I’m interested to hear what you guys think is the reason for this….

    so what.wow.the woman has
18 number 1#s.most artist cant even get into the top 40.i think that it was not a song a great song choice for the second single.but i love the lovin you long time

That’s b/c the video had nothing to do with the song. the video was all about her making out with NC. Come on now. What does her hugging up with him in the pool have to do with the song. She just put some
    sh– together on a fly.

for me there are several facts…

first the song quite deserve to be a single but not the second one… It should be out near the end of the era to close it.

secondly the song itself if quite boring because it’s equal from the start to the end. it’s supposed to be emotional but it doesn’t sound emotional because the song is way too overproduced and sounds a bit formated. Mariah should do a piano version + gospel singers for that song to have a real impact.

third the video. Well I dunno what people think but for me the video shows Mimi, Nick and her marketing time more than the emotional thing. It’s too much
and when she holds the mic… comon it just look fake. I rather see a simple video showing Mariah turning the page of a photobook wich sum up her story, her lost and everything (related to the song) and then @ the en Nick enter on the room closing the photobook and leave with Mariah. It could mean u lost people but life is still going on…

and then the performances… Mariah should try to make this song more genuine live. I don’t talk about lip sync. But less arangement for more real instruments would be great. That’s the problem of the whole album IMO : ballads and love songs are too close to the mid-tempo songs.

I lOVE I’LL BE LOVIN U LONG TIME AND I HOPE IT WILL BE A REAL SUMMER HIT !

The chickens are coming home to roost.

She has not done any promotion for the album in the US since the end of May; do you honestly expect an unpromoted album to succeed on the charts for very long? I wonder if she may appear at the BET Awards tonight; it would be a great place to launch her latest single, I’ll Be Lovin’ U Long Time.

Mariah and Madonna’s albums have both been sinking on the charts because neither have done any promotion lately and they both had weak second singles. They need to get back on their grind if they hope to achieve big numbers.

Is anyone else as excited as I am for the BET Awards tonight?

    By the way, Mado

It’s a stupid time to release it as a single, nobody wants to be listening to that in the summer.

It’s a nice song, I like it, but it’s also not very radio friendly.

She needs to release “Side Effects”.

Now you know Mariah doesn’t have a hit until she gets the darkest skinned brotha to rap a remix to her songs. Mariah is the queen of remix hits.

  8. HPFriendsAddict June 24, 2008

Bye Bye was a stupid second choice for a single. She’s trying to recreate another We Belong Together-type hit & it’s just not working out for Mimi.

It was also kind of annoying.

bad single choices, the labels should have been released MIGRATE as the second single so that it will not kill the momentum of the album, the album has a lot of single material, its just a matter or choices single to be released

From the words of my grandmother, “Chile, put some clothes on.”

  11. Eric P June 24, 2008

Mariah is really making me mad this time around lol, I love E=MC2, and Bye Bye isn’t doing as well as her other singles because it was released way too early, if it was going to be a single at all. Migrate was the OBVIOUS best choice for the second single, I don’t know what she was thinking lol.

  12. Anonymous June 24, 2008

    maybe because that song stinks.

i love MiMi but that boring ass song sucks real real hard.

  13. Mark June 24, 2008

Awful second single choice, it should have been Lovin’ U Long Time, followed by Migrate, & definitely Side Effects in there somewhere…

  15. TOOKIE June 24, 2008

    SHE IS TOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OLD SHE NEEDS TO MAKE SONGS ON HER LEVEL..TO OLD TO BE WEARIN THOSE CLOTHES..
    ALL THEM WRINKLES…..
FOR REAL TALK TONE IT DOWN

  16. Anonymous June 24, 2008

no1 cares thats the real reason. the ‘marriage’ left a salty taste in people’s mouths including mine.
the second single shud’ve been migrate its sooo obvious!

  17. Anonymous June 24, 2008

lol I think its sooo funny how he makes a whole post about mariahs single not doing well when it happens to allot of other artist and its not a big deal. Mariah will rebound and yea Bye Bye was never gonna be a huge hit. But the album is filled with huge hits. So I’d like what he has to say when she scores another #1 from this album which WILL happen watchh

  18. Anonymous June 24, 2008

Ok we are talking about a woman who’s career has seen it’s highs and lows but for the most part the good has out weighed the bad. Another platinum album is not bad for some one almost two decades into their career. We tend to expect a 1 hit all the time which will not happen. Honestly the wrong choice for a single. Also she selling better than a lot of divas right now but you make no mention of the positive when it comes to MC lately as I see but all you wanna see is the negative which says something about you.

  19. Anonymous June 24, 2008

her dumba** should have released migrate as the second single that song had #1 summer hit written all over it…what was she thinking??

  20. Anonymous June 24, 2008

S*** single frin a mediocre album. I think she should have released Migrate or For The Record, as they are the only decent tracks on the albumm.

  21. SweetSugarShack June 24, 2008

Definitely wasn’t the best choice for a second single. After the success of “Touch My Body”, Ms. Cannon should have went a completely different direction. With so many uptempo tracks on the album, why take us from fondling to crying about dead loved ones? IMO, it just wasn’t a good idea.

  22. Mikey June 24, 2008

Exactly why this site is becoming a bit annoying. Sam your so quick to make a post talking about how MC’s not doing well. When the truth is MC is doing really well. She scored yet another top 20 hit so give it a rest. Your so extra nowadays, you always hating on Mariah now. Let’s talk about how your girl Michelle’s new song isn’t a hit or the fact that her album wont be on either.

  23. Anonymous June 24, 2008

boring somng. crap song in my opinion. never liked it. especially after a boring touch my body song, it was kinda like… erm, there are better songs to be released on the album… Migrate, Cruise Control, Stay In Lobve, For the Record…

the video was CRAP aswell…. sorry, it just was… her and nick… what was nick doing in the video?

Loving you long time SHOULD NOT BE RELEASED! IT WILL TANK ASWEL!

The album is not that bad, but these single choice are gonna ruin it even more…

my 4 singles from the album would be…

    Cruise Control
    Migrate
    For the Record and
    I Stay In Love

  24. Xx.Black*Butterfly.xX June 24, 2008

In my opinion, ‘Bye Bye’ is a bad single choice even more when there are songs like ‘For The Record’, ‘Love Story’, or OF COURSE ‘Migrate’, i think ‘Ill be loving you long time’ is just Ok, but it will be a lil better than ‘Bye Bye’ not too much better.
And her last performances were very dissapointed, and that dind’t help the record to go well i think .. =S
Sorry if my english is not 100% perfect, im from Spain xD
    Great Blog ! ( L )

  25. thirtydaes June 24, 2008

bye bye was a horrible choice for a single at all, especially the second single. migrate was a nobrainer slam dunk, then for the record or love story. the album won’t recover. sorry mimi…i still love you though!

  26. Son of Baldwin June 24, 2008

I find Mariah’s entire album an uninspired duplication of her previous efforts. It’s no surprise at ALL that “Bye Bye” is going bye-bye.

  27. Anonymous June 24, 2008

I actually like Bye Bye but i agree with most of the people in here its shouldnt have been the second single. “That Chick” has summer hit all over it.

    Single order should have been
    Migrate
    Touch My Body
    That Chick
    Stay In Love
    For the Record

  28. jer. June 24, 2008

What was the point of posting this? The song underperformed. You’re an asshole. i can make true statements too! wow!

  29. Anonymous June 25, 2008

migrate shouldve been released! in fact e=mc2 has a lot of songs for the summer i understand why she chose bye bye but i still think it was wrong because the song is quite boring

  30. Mi June 25, 2008

Bye Bye it’s not a “We Belong Together”. Ok. But is a great song. Maybe not for single. But a good song. Makes me cry and all of you are an assholes, like this blog now. Mariah is the most succesfull female artist ever with 18 number 1 hits. Michelle Williams is a flop singer like “We Break The Dawn” is flop. Bye Bye is another top 20 hit. HIT. Not FLOP. F*** you all!

  31. Isaiah D. June 25, 2008

Okay, heres my look on it. Im like the biggest Mariah Carey fan i know [lol] and im a STRAIGHT guy you know. If you look at Mariah’s work from the past, best example being Butterfly, she really didnt have the depth lyrically that she had on that album. Like people really felt her songs before because they were deep, they like touched people. Honestly this was a good concept but its wack compared to her other work. Dont get me wrong i still listen to the song but it isnt up to par with what shes able to do. Honestly i think she should go back at what i think is her best album, Butterfly. There was what i thought all potential #1’s [i.e, Breakdown, Whenever You Call, Honey]. It was like the perfect blend of R&B, Soul, and a hip hop feel to. There are some songs on her newest LP that are hit-worthy [ex. Cruise Control, Side Effects, and Love Story]. If she were to come out with Love Story, i think she should make it an acoustic version, but thats because i like the acoustic version lol. Basically if she goes back lyrically and performance wise, she’ll be back to the Mariah we all know and (still) love

  32. Anonymous June 28, 2008

I just love Mariah Carey! Her voice is just precious! I love the E=MC2! I think that what happens is that she has done about everything with her voice and beautiful songs, that people are expecting even more from her. But let’s be honest, there is no women singer in this world that can sing or write liker her and have #1’s in almost all the cd’s she has. Nobody has been able to do this ever in history!!!! So let’s show some respect for this diva, she is has a gifted voice no matter ehat she sings.. God bless you MC and We are LAMBS forever!!

    This Is My Opinion:
Bye Bye Is Not A Strong Single Choice. However, Planned Properly, I Could Still Have Been A Success. For Instance, They Released Bye BYe Whilst Touch My Body Was Still In The Top Ten Of The Billboard Hot 100. Also They Released Bye Bye to US Radio And Digital Retailers At The Same Time, Which is unusual, as most singles in the US receive at least a months worth of airplay befor being released as downloads, in order to help chart positions. To sum up, although Bye Bye was not an out-of-this-world success, and although it was not a brilliant single choice it could have achieved at least Top 10 status if the release was handled more carefully. In my opinion, if they wanted to score Mariah’s 19th US number-one single, Migrate should have been released. It has that Hip-Hop vibe that the US is feeling at the moment, plus T-Pain makes an appearance on the song, and he is extremely popular in the US
