Official: Janet Jackson Parts With Def Jam

Published: Monday 22nd Sep 2008 by Sam
Apologies for the slowish updates. Business as usual from here on out. A lot to look forward to this week….the Ashanti and Ne-Yo interviews (definitely) and much more.

Anyway, in an exclusive video blog for our affiliate site Rap-Up.com, hit-maker Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins reveals that Pop starlet Janet Jackson has officially severed ties with label Island Def Jam, after one album – this years’ ‘Discipline’. Check it out:

With Janet having been so vocal about her displeasure with her relationship with the label, this hardly comes as a surprise. Here’s hoping that with the success of Janet’s ‘Rock Witchu’ tour, things are on the look-up for Ms. Jackson (if you’re nasty!…).

Your thoughts?

I think she did what she had too…she needs someone who still believe in her as a performer…Def Jam wasn’t really interested in her..i guess…anyway i’ll luv her forever even if she won’t release any other hits cause i can still dance to her old hits!

GREAT CD, WRONG LABEL, I MEAN COME ON, THEY DROPPED THE BALL ON MARIAH THIS GO ROUND TOO, SO SHYT, I'D BE OUT TOO! CONGRATS ON HER TOUR, HOPEFULLY SHE DOES SOMETHING, MAYBE INDEPENDENT, IDK, JUST DO ANOTHER GREAT CD LIKE DISCIPLINE, BETTER PROMO AND SINGLES, CUZ OMG IT COULD BEEN 'FEEDBACK' WITH GREAT PROMO, THEN 'LUV' AND A TOSS UP BET. '2NITE' AND 'ROLLERCOASTER', EVEN 'WHAT'S UR NAME', IDK ABOUT A SLOWER SONG BUT THOSE, SERIOUSLY, 'FEEDBACK' WAS A SMASH, 'LUV' WAS A FAN FAV, '2NITE' WAS IN S** AND THE CITY, 'ROLLERCOASTER' WAS JUST AMAZING AND 'WHAT'S UR NAME' IS JUST SO SUMMER TO ME, DOUBT A HUGE HIT BUT SUMTHIN FOR R&B RADIO!

luves me some janet! she can relax, she has so many classics that the fans can play for decades!

  6. Anonymous September 22, 2008

I think this is for the best, no matter how good your music is (and Discipline was good!!) it will go nowhere without good label support. I think she will find it again, it will just take some time. Right now this tour is the best thing she could be doing for her career!!

Darkchild said it best, an artist of her caliber and with the longevity she’s had, her label should have been behind her 100%. That’s a big loss for them.

Good move Janet! She needs to start her own label. She’s too big of an artist to deal w/ these money hungry record labels. They don’t care about the artist anymore. Doesn’t matter that she’s been in the game 30 years. People are dumb.

Def Jam supported Janet at the beginning. A lot of money was spent on promoting Feedback and letting people know her album was coming out. Janet’s sales were low and that is why they cancelled all further promo for the album. With a single like Feedback she should have been able to come closer to Mariah or Beyonce’s opening sales but Janet has lost a lot of her public appeal. I hope she releases a live tour DVD so people know that she still has it as a legendary dancer and performer.

Hate to say it Anonymous, but you’re right… I love Janet to death and I went to a club last night…asked the dj to play JAnets “Rock Wichu” and the dj said ” I dont play Janet here!” I was like “Whaaaat!” and it was a GAY club! ARE YOU SERIOUS!?!?! Needless to say, I wont be going there again…why people write Janet off like this? If she was a WHITE WOMAN, none of this would have made a big issue. I love my black women! They go through so much and still keep going! GOn Janet!

well I went 2 her show this wknd – AMAZING, shes the nest & I WILL ALWAYS SUPPORT HER-good luck JANET!

I like Rodney’s plan for a Janet, Dark Child and Flyte Time collabo. That would be the hotness as indicated by Feedback and LUV on discipline.

  14. Anonymous September 22, 2008

Sorry but I think she should fall back from recording for a while before jumping right back into the music scene. This was a supposed to be a big comeback for Janet and it didn’t pan out the way many hoped. With her fan base Janet should easily be able to squeeze a platinum no matter what label she’s on. That means the masses were not at the stores looking for a Janet album. With that said the tour is doing well that is what her fans want the entertainment that Janet brings.

SHE DOING RITE NOW BY TOURING…WHICH SHE SHOULD HAVE DONE BEFORE RELEASING ANY CDs…BUT JANET ALWAYS GOING TO MAKE HER MONEY BUY TOURING THAT WHY SHE WASNT WORRIED ABOUT DEF JAM THERE LOST

  16. Anonymous September 22, 2008

Why is everybody blaming the label? If your stuff is appealing, you can release a CD on PEEWEES Label and get the people to buy it. It was a commercial flop with plenty promotion. She’s a bit tired. Stop blaming Jermaine and Def Jam. If her touring is her strong point, maybe she should do that for a while.

    News Flash Janet,

You still look good for your age, but you need to kill some of your overtly sexual lyrics and images. You do not have to prove to the world that you have grown into a woman. We get that. Therefore, stop giving interviews about your sexual desires, stop taking provocative photo shoots, and stop saying nasty things in your song.

Even Madonna knew to tone it down when she got older. It’s just not a good look. Stop being rebellious and try to get the public to forget about your Super Bowl incident even if you were wrongfully mistreated. You know that because you are a black woman and not a white man (Justin Timberlake), you need to do more to get the public’s forgiveness.

Therefore, put your clothes back on, give clean interviews and sing about dancing so that you can get back on top.

  22. Anonymous September 22, 2008

Can you post the Ashanti interview tomorrow?

Def Jam didnt promote Janet properly anyway so it’s good she left

  23. Anonymous September 22, 2008

All you people who think u can put out a record on any no name label and it will sell don’t know anything about business. You have to put money into marketing, advertising and promotions. If u half ass it, you get half ass results. Janet got half assed promotion. I live in DC and there are tons of spots where you see posters of whose cd is coming out in the next couple of weeks. I didn’t see one Janet Discipline poster, but a few weeks later Mariah’s were put up. There was no reason for IDJ not to support Janet knowing they would have a harder time with her than Mariah, but they decided otherwise and got less than stellar results which is to be expected with the little effort they put forth. Again, go Janet!!! Anyway, check out this remix of Rock With U featuring Plies: http://www.zshare.net/audio/1923822461f74fd6/

The sooner she leave that label the better.

  25. TILTY September 23, 2008

maybe mariah is next to leave idj, her e=mc2 is her last album with an option to do one last album, but things arent getting well to between she and la reid, i heard there having a dis-agreement on single choices just like jant too..

  26. Anonymous September 23, 2008

Promotion counts for, dare I say, half of an album’s success. Discipline’s promotion was very poor. The older, but not die-hard, fans weren’t aware of her new album, and the young kids weren’t introduced to her music via radio or much of MTV, so albums sales tanked. I didn’t think the album was her comeback in terms of quality, but it still deserved to go platinum.

  27. Anonymous September 23, 2008

    its good the left

SHE IS STILL HOT! and she needs good label
    def jam sucks big time

    I LOVE U JANET

  28. The King Of Cool September 23, 2008

Good luck to Janet. I wish her the best. She’s still amazing. She just needs to get her act straightened out. She hasn’t always made the right choices. I do hope things will turn around for her. She’s gorgeous and talented.
