One of music’s biggest Icons, Mariah Carey, has released her long-awaited video for ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’. The video was directed by Hype Williams, who reportedly clashed with MC’s label over the concept and production of the clip. ‘I Want To Know What Love Is’, which is said to be the album’s “first official single”, failed to climb pass #60 on the Billboard Hot 100 despite being successful on the Adult Contemporary format by peaking at #10 on said chart.
Why Mariah…why? In the words of the diva herself “who approved this?!” This easily ranks as one of the worst videos in her entire career. The song itself is already corny to the bone but the supporting clip is even worse! The CGI, the cliche appeal of the onlookers, the lighting and of course the horribly edited green screen effects; every element was of utterly poor taste. The only reason that I won’t hold Mariah herself responsible for this mess is because of her continued expressions of disgust toward this song being chosen as a single. I applaud her for not going Naomi Campbell-crazy and attacking everyone on the set when she saw the finished product.
As a matter of fact, I will forget that I even saw this video. It is officially being placed into the box at the back of my mind along with the Rihanna’s ‘The Wait Is Ova’ and Beyonce’s ‘Sweet Dreams’ clips.
Note: the guy at the 2:12 mark is from my country!
Sam note: Just saw this now. Hot A** Mess. Mimi, no….just no.
This is definitely her worse video. It just looks cheesy and lame. Can we say low budget! I don’t even know why they released this video at this point, the song is dead and the album is on life support.
In Contrast to Whitney’s video I look to you, this video is an epic fail. I see MC tried to go for the less is more look h/e with the fake background, fake arena with the added choir just added to the overall cheesiness of the video, the people were essential but could’ve been more insightful opposed to just standing there smiling, holding hands and all. Loved her make it through the rain video- she should have based the concept of IWKWLI around a similar concept unfortunate we got an underproduced & underwhelming video for a song that has great potential to become a bonafide hit. MC needs to start taking herself seriously, either that or someone is deliberately trying to run MC’s career in the gutter….and it’s working.
I love it, it’s refreshing to see something completly diffrent from her than the typical Brett Ratner videos where all her shots are the same, this song is a national anthem in it’s original form and her version so it make sperfect sence that the video is set in a stadium whwere you would sing an anthem, ii think it’s beauitufl and i love that compute r game look, it’s totally different for her, i like! 🙂
luv the video
OMG YES SHE DID A VIDEO FOR THIS SONG!!!
It looks cheap but its all good cause everyones videos are cheap these days!!!
Guess what seeing this video has made me like the song AGAIN!!!
So I give it a 6/10
Was very difficult did it in a real stadium????? Hype Williams is your worst video Brett Rader forever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I liked it a lot…simple, pretty, nice video … great song, it went well together…
It wouldn’t be a Mariah video without the crowd gazing up at her as though she were god’s gift to humanity, the vain b****! LOL
Yeah, cheesefest all the way.
6/10
so so… but she looks very pretty in the video!
1) Who in the hell gave this b******* 6/10 above?? This mess looks worse than something a common everyday youtuber has edited on their own!
2) Hype Williams? Really?!?!? Wow.. Double WOW! Definitely far from any of the successes of his previous work. Hype, you would have been better off capturing moments of her performing this live & putting them all together….
3) Mariah is too damn old & has been in this industry too damn long to have other people call the shots for her. She really needs to consider calling up Clive Davis so that he can get it right the way Whitney & J-Hud have been doing. Mariah also needs to take some serious time off to get to know who her audience is…
Remix album better drop real soon….
OK, look. I know what Hype was going for here, and while he failed I would still give him props for not doing the same exact thing he does every video. I thought it was sweet, and I also appreciated that there was a gay male couple of color in the video, too. Not her best, but nowhere near as bad as you are all making it out to be.
HORRIBLE,TERRILE,HIDEOUS,CHEAP,LAME!!!!
that s*** hurted my poor eyes!!
what the f*** mariah?!!!
TERRIBLE*
Whatever you say…
It’s more important that I LIKE IT… :)))
Scuse you Trent but Sweet Dreams was a good video and for you to put this s*** in the same category is sad.
SMGDH
This wouldve been a better video if it was simply a live performance with a REAL choir & audience used as the official video…(i.e. The Oprah performance would have sooted just fine for the official video)…
Trent U R Lame. Sweet Dreams is a great clip, compared to this. Sam I dont see why you need this guy in the first place
What in the f*** is going on with this woman’s career? Why is her label making her produce s***** music! I have to blow the smoke from ya’ll eyes! I feel like her label is not doing her justice by making these horrible ass videos! Mariah really needs to go back to when she was singing like she meant it! I’m soooooooooo f****** tried of watered down ass music from her, she need to sing like somebody got a got damn knife to her throat! B**** sing like you used to!
at least she looked good…not a great video, but they were trying for the 90s feel…
Why do you keep on going out about this being the “first official single”?? She NEVER said that. The only person who called it that was Roger Friedman, a journalist. Just last week she was talking about how please she was Obsessed has gone platinum.
But yes, the video is pants. Shame on Hype Williams!
