Unique performer Kelis recently sat down with Popbytes where she discussed her upcoming album. The artist also shared her thoughts about Rihanna, who has been accused of ”swagger jacking” her style, as well as Lady GaGa. Kelis’ new album hits stores in 2010.
As one of the people who has followed Kelis’ career for quite some time, I definitely see elements of her style in both Rihanna’s music and her fashion choices. From the Pop/Rock-infused Hip-Hop beats to her edgy hair styles (see the Bossy video), many acts have incorporated elements of her appeal into their artistry. Nevertheless, I respect how Kelis addressed the issue without being overtly ‘catty’ or disrespectful. Good stuff.

IMO, Rihanna swagger jacked Fefe Dobson more than Kelis, but she definitely borrowed heavily from both.
Im no Rihanna fan….but I will tell you this, if she did indeed get inspiration from Kelis…she RAN with it. Cuz now, Kelis couldn’t touch Rihanna style with a 100 ft pole.

I wouldn’t say Kelis gets no credit. She’s been honored by Glamour, Trace, Vogue UK, was muse to Matthew Williamson and Jeremy Scott. People just have short term memories. It’s been years since Kelis was on the scene, so people forget. These days you have to constantly be in peoples faces.
I don’t think Rihanna has jacked anyone. I just think her stylists have used Kelis and others as an inspiration for her looks. Kelis’ stylist Dickey has styled her hair. It’s not like Rihanna decides her looks, so all the back and forth is dumb. I like how Kelis handled it. Very mature and wise and respectful. She’s grown and a 10 year vet.
Kelis’ career has suffered in the US due to problems with labels. You have to remember back in 99, no one knew what to do with her. And she’s never gotten that huge push. But she’s still managed to have several international top 10’s and a handful of pop hits here.

Rihanna hasnt made no influence in music. Lemme refresh YOUR memory.. Kelis cut her hair in “BOSSY” music video in 2006, which is 3 years ago. A year later, Rihanna cuts her hair, starts to dress like Kelis, and trying to look like her.
The point is Kelis stated that she was paying homage to Salt n’Pepa but with her own twist callin it “Salt n’ Pepa 2010″. Rihanna just straight up copied Kelis’ style and not even giving her credit. Kelis made a bigger impact than Rihanna because if it wasn’t for Kelis, Rihanna would still be biting Beyonce.
ts funny how people acting like Kelis is irrelevant. Friendly reminder, Kelis is much more relevant and much more respected than your fave Rihanna.
