After initially announcing that ‘Love Over Me’ and ‘One In A Lifetime’ were to serve as dual lead singles from Monica’s forthcoming ‘Still Standing’ LP, her label J Records have done a 180 and revealed that the track ‘Everything’ will instead now be the record’s first single. The decision was made after the 29 year old’s fans bombarded label execs with requests for the song to be the lead single, a want shared by Monica herself – as highlighted on her BET reality series also titled ‘Still Standing’.
While ‘Everything’ is undoubtedly a great track, it most certainly doesn’t strike me as single material in the slightest. It’s not because it’s not a good song (though the ad-libbing is a bit much and all over the place at times). However it just doesn’t possess that certain something Monica so clearly needs right now – a radio/chart-friendly track, which manages to sound contemporary, yet also incorporates her trademark sound. She’ll no doubt appeal to her fans with this one, yet as history has taught many an artist, sometimes fans just aren’t enough to ensure a well-selling record. Ever-important to capture and convert is the casual listener. It’ll be interesting to see how this fares nontheless.

What strikes me as shocking and disapointing is that we can tell this is a classic and great vocal and art peice that has been presented yet we are still only concerned with her putting out something that is like a Beyonce or Rihanna or COMMERCIAL. THIS is a CLASSIC vocal and arrangement and originally i would of had this as 1st single just as a statement of “MONICA is back and her vocal game is better than ever”, however after hearing Love All Over Me it comes across more 1st single friendly than “Everything” as well as making the same vocal statement.
I actually believe that the label may go with Timbalands theory of pushing a single out there to gain recognition then follow with another song.
Now that everything is 1st single I feel Love All Over should come as 3rd single.

It’s not about trying to appeal to a “pop audience, it’s about appealing to your core fan base. And Monica’s fan base is R&b lovers. And if you watch her show u will see she do have another single to follow this up with and its called Love All Over Me. So i think the label released this to let people know that Monica is back and she’s doing what she do best and that’s using her god-given talent. She doesn’t need a gimmick to generate sales.

Who are these “fans” that voted for this song to be the first single? Are these the same “fans” that will be downloading her album when it leaks instead of buying it? I’m just sayin’ because I am a Monica fan (sans Makings of Me) and I would not vote for this song to be a single. Singles are meant to draw interest, introduce the artist, and promote. Remember Destiny Fullfilled? Lose My Breath was crazy club hard and the rest of the album was like R&B ballads. Total scam but people sure bought the album because that song was everywhere. Just because something is Urban pop or crosses over doesn’t mean it’s a gimmick. She could sing her heart out on a pop ballad or epic ballad just as easily as this track. Leona does it very well.

What numerous people are forgetting is Monica wants to do an album that is a reflection of who she is. Monica’s most notorious hits have been ballads. Most of the up-tempo songs she has done have not been hits like her ballads. People Monica can sing! She is not trying to appeal to people who are not on the R&B level she is. I really don’t think she cares about the pop charts. We cannot compare her to Beyonce Rihanna or Lady Gaga. (Lady Gaga is another one with an amazing and soulful voice, who does much better when she is not wearing the hand me downs of Grace Jones). I understand what Monica is setting out to do. I hope people will support her efforts. We live in a time where people do not sing anymore. There are very few female artist who can blow likd this. I miss Kelly Price, Deborah C** and Tamia. Taima’s Between Friends was a classic album and there were not gimmicks, She just sang. So I must say I like this song it’s a big ballad. Will it hit number one? I believe it will soar on the R&B charts. It will slowly climb up the top 50 for Pop.

I think its right to question whether or not this song is a single kind of song. For some artists the answer would be an easy “No,” but for someone like Monica the answer is “yes.” I think its important to keep in mind what kind of artist Monica is and has been, and I think this song makes sense for her. While I agree that songs have to be radio friendly, there is something to be said for songs that become big just because they got a lot of publicity. Here I think Amerie’s song “Heard ’em all” (and career for that matter) are great examples of the importance of the work of the record label in helping songs become hits–great songs but no real push by A&R specifically and the record label more generally. I think Monica has brought soulful vocals back into R&B music (or at least reintroduced as a viable option for recording artists) and reminds me of the 90’s (a la SWV, Xscape, Karyn White). Often R&B artists are so concerned these days with cross-over appeal that soulful R&B ballads have become few and far in between. Using the sample from “Silly” by Denise Williams was a nice choice, and reminds me much of Angie Stone’s “I Wish I Didn’t Miss You” in that it draws on an old classic to create a new one. This will be a hit (not a number one necessarily) if Monica’s is out there singing the song at as many venues as you can, and if J Records really puts support behind the song. These days those two things go hand in hand in making a song a hit, especially a ballad. It may be worth while to attach the song to some soundtrack of some sort in addition to the album. Keep in mind the success of songs like “Ordinary People” by John Legend and “Love” by Keyshia Cole. This song definitely has potential, there is just little room for mistakes.

I have to disagree with you Sam, I was actually hoping she would go with this one or “Betcha.” It is a nice smooth mid-tempo that shows elegant melody with supurb vocal, something that we don’t see that much on urban radio, it is all about a club hit with a stupid catch-phrase. I think there are too many people in the label that are losing touch of what is good music and are procrastinating. Makes me kinda wish I had their job because I truly believe I could do it better. Forget trying to crossover or trying to compete with Rihanna or Beyonce’s material, I don’t want to hear more of the same. Music is supposed to mean something, and this song MEANS SOMETHING. Everything has always stood out to me, I think it will do fine as a single if they get it out and the video is right.
