Alexandra Burke Switches Single Choice

Published: Saturday 13th Mar 2010 by Sam

After it initially being confirmed that Pop sensation Alexandra Burke would be releasing ‘The Silence’, as the 3rd single from her Platinum selling debut ‘Overcome’, the singer has revealed her team have opted for another song. Speaking on Twitter, Burke said:

Ok.So maybe its time to say what the new single is going to be.. Some of you may know, and some may not. Well, I’m happy with it. Hope U r…

Its.. ‘All Night Long’ Feat Pitbull …xx

Hmm. As mentioned many a time, I’m a sucker for ‘The Silence’, as well as ‘Nothing But The Girl‘, hence would have preferred either of those. That said, I can see why the label would have opted for this – with its catchy, radio-ready nature. It must be said, though; why they’d opt for yet another feature – particularly Pitbull (sorry folks, I just don’t get the hype) is beyond me – particularly here in the UK. That is unless they’re hoping to release the song as her debut US release – which may or may not work. Time will tell…

For those who haven’t heard the track yet, check it out here.

Love both versions of the song but I can see the long term plan. The pitbull version will obviously be released in the states so they have to release it in the UK as well.Hope it does well, she will be on Ant and Dec this evening ITV 8pm.

  2. Mia March 13, 2010

sorry man. this chick is too ugly to be a popstar. song is whack as hell.

  3. Tha Phoenix March 13, 2010

Well they’ve shot the vid for th The Silence, so that’ll probably come out after All Night Long. I like both so this isn’t a problem for me…

  4. Ben March 13, 2010

Mia is really Toya from Toyas world and for some reason she hates Alex with a passion. She will go from forum to forum dissing Alex.It is funny that she always comments about Alex’s looks and yet no one has seen a picture of her face.I can never understand the mentality of one black women calling anyone ugly as in this society women are always judged badly for their looks.Alex is a beautiful sister and the song will be a world wide hit from the US to the UK.

  5. antertain March 13, 2010

I need a slow jam banger from Alex.
Her Soulful rasp is wasted on tooooooo many up-tempo’s.
She fun and all that but the girl can sang so i need a single to reflect that.
    All we’ve had is Hallelujah

Some background- Brandy was dropped from Sony Epic. A few weeks later is was announced that Alexandra Burke was signed in America to Sony Epic. I can only speculate that Sony is hoping to market Alexandra in the same way as they attempted with Brandy- Pop with a tinge of RnB. They were unsuccessful with Brandy. I see similarities in both singers as they are both dark skinned Black women, amazing voices and not classically beautiful. My fear is that Sony will be unsuccessful with Alexandra. Her look, her voice and image is not taylored for Pop radio. She will be recieved by an American audience with hesitation. Again, she’s not classically beautiful and her persona doesn’t equate female empowerment or artistic freedom (Beyonce and Lady GaGa) She will be lost in the crowd e.g. Leona Lewis in America- same thing. Young American girls are not going to want to be her and young American guys are not going to fantasize about her. Alexandra simply needs to be re-imaged and re-packaged before crossing the Pond.

    ephriamv, agreed 100%.

  8. OSO_Deluxe Edition March 13, 2010

    EPHRIAMV I agree with you…….
but I think that she can have some success with the right music anyone can. (Sean Kingston did it)….
and I think she looks beautiful and kind of cute she just needs better music…less generic boring sh*t!

  9. Sam March 13, 2010

I think Bad Boys and All Night Long are really good radio friendly songs.I think what will help Alex in the US are two things she is a great performer, on stage she dances and sings so well and she has an incrediible voice.Another thing I like about her is that she is such a lady, well spoken and appealing which I think will work in having crossover appeal. She will be as comfortable on David Letterman as she would be on 106 and Park.I think if Alex was going to have problems anywhere being brown skinned it would be Europe but Western and Eastern Europe have given her a good response.Plus Michelle Obama is the cover girl and role model of choice for the nation these days which is a big help for Alex being a brown sister who is very beautiful.Sometimes I think we as black people show our own insecurities and sense of inferiority making these issues out to be big.Alex has a great voice, is a realy good dancer and has the right backing.

  10. Tha Phoenix March 13, 2010

@Sam I couldn’t agree more with you. In this Post-Obama era, anything is possible for us and we should maintain a positive attitude.

Imagine if someone had told Dr MLT that his ideas would never pan out and he should just give up. We wouldn’t have made the leaps and bounds we have today…

    LOL… sorry typo…

SAM- You make a great point, but in looking at America’s track record in reference to Black women, particulariy light skinned Black women in the music entertainment industry, light skinned Black woman have been 10x more successful than darker skinned Black women. The current top of charts Black women in music righ now are Beyonce and Alicia Keys, both light skinned and exotic-looking. The last successful Black dark skinned popstar I remember as being wildly successful was Lauren Hill. America is image-obsessed, beauty-obsessed and unfortunately in American Black culture, there’s a sub-culture mindset of lighter skinned Black women being more attractive and better-looking than their darker counterparts. I think the American music industry reinforces that mind set with music video images and objectified light skinned Black women constantly being featured. Europe seems to have a better appreciation for darker skinned Black women in music- it’s not surprising how successful Kelly Rowland has been with her “Love Takes Over” track. Ironically, not much success in her own country with the track.

  13. Marie March 13, 2010

Tha Phoenix and Sam thank God for your common sense and pride. It is disgusting in this day and age that anyone is fixated on skin tone and not talent especially another black person. It does show insecurity and doubting ourselves. We black people have OVERCOME so many obstacles and will continue to do so.This week alone we were represented at the Oscars by not one NOT TWO BUT THREE dark skinned sisters who brough tears to my eyes.Monique, Oprah Winfrey and Gabby Sidebe. We wiill continue to take on the world and have to stop trying to tear each other down we are better than that.Alexandra Burke is the real deal and she will be an International star because of how talented she is.I love my Black people but we have to stop the negativity and lift each other up.PEACE

  14. Sam March 13, 2010

We need to just stop this and now, this is not the sixties. It is time to step out of the mentality of feeling inferior and feeding of our insecurities about skin tone.We as black people have OVERCOME so much and will continue to do so.Look at white people Lady Gaga and Kesha are ugly but you never hear them insult them they support thier own.Sadly it is some people who want to cling onto these issues and not move on.Alexandra Burke is the real deal and has not just the talent but the work ethic to go far. There is a buzz about her American launch that I have not seen in a long time.I agree the Queen Bee is Michelle Obama and lets not forget this week at the Oscars three brown sisters Oprah, Monique and Gabby took their place at the ceremony and id us proud. We need to stop trying to make this issue bigger than it is , if anything has got Beyonce and Alicia where they are is that they are both song writers and performers who have the strongest work ethic arund at the moment.Get used to seeing and hearing Alexandra Burke as Bad Boys and All Night Long will soon be everywhere.

  15. Tha Phoenix March 13, 2010

@Sam … do you have any idea of when she’s gonna be released there? I’ve been trying to find out, but there’s just rumours of a summer release…

Bad Boys would be a HUGE summer song…

  16. Sam March 13, 2010

She is releasing All Night Long in the UK next month and her first tv apperance will be tonight.I think her promotion in the UK will be finished by early May.I am sure Bad Boys will go to US radio in late April and Alex will be in America in May for promo. It is also possible that All night Long will be the first US release depending on how it does here. For her Brit fans are FloRida and Pitbull considered good crossover artists that will get Alex radio interest.

  17. SparkD March 13, 2010

I don’t buy any of this light skin / dark skin crap is Alex is promoted properly. And even if that was true because she’s British, she can get away with being “popish” in the U.S.

And don’t you guys remember when Brandy was what NO OTHER BLACK YOUNG WOMAN did since Whitney and Diana Ross…And she did it with BROWN SKIN and BRAIDS.

Alex can make it. She just has to get the right promotion…She’s already different: Dark and British.

And yes, Michelle Obama is changing the image of beauty and acceptance of black diversity.

  18. SparkD March 13, 2010

Excuse my typos…I was too pissed over this colorism crap!

  19. Tha Phoenix March 13, 2010

    @Sam… thanx…

    xo

  20. Alex March 13, 2010

Both are great songs but its about time she releases a ballad. All Night Long could’ve followed The Silence.

  21. Ben March 13, 2010

If it was white people talking about things like this we would be up in arms.We really have along way to go and it makes me very sad.People should think before they just write anything and think about what dark skinned people must think reading this.We face enough racism and should never turn it against each other.Look at how Chelsea Handler went off on Beyonce and Howard Stern insulted Gabby Sidibe we need to stop lowering ourselves to that level.Uplifting and validation is what we need to do especiallly those amoungst us who are truly talented, work hard and have something special and that is the beautiful Alexandra Burke.Love the song and she is going all the way to the top-rant over.

  22. johnsmith March 13, 2010

i agree 100% and MARIE, alexandra is way darker then oprah, monique etc. alex’s personality is horid. shes loud, she laughs with a horrible chesty sound. shes quite annoying. and americans won’t apreciate that. and she’ll have stiff competition eg beyonce rihanna and lady gaga. and every1’s going on like byeonce is more succesfull then brandy and kelly rowland because shes light. shes more succesfull becauses she wayy n i mean wayy more talented. i’m a big kelly rowland/alexandra fan so my opinion’s arent biased .

  23. SparkD March 13, 2010

EXCUUUUUUUUUSE! American’s sure did appreciate Brandy with brown skin and braids…America sure did appreciate Tracey Chapman…They appreciated Lauryn.

All were well-promoted. Jody Watley was appreciated. Get over this dark skin stuff—and Alex isn’t all the way black anyway.

  24. Ben March 13, 2010

Either way, I look forward to it. She is a great piece of talent right now. I just can’t wait till she hits the states.

  25. Sam March 14, 2010

johnsmith you are no way an Alex fan if you call her personality horrid, claim she is annoying and say she has a horrid laugh what are you 10 years old.You have never met Alex she is a beautiful girl and has bags of talent, are you just jealous and threatened by another sister who is going to do great things. Those who have met Alex always compliment her on how nice, genuine and kind she is, you have never met her so shut the hell up.Beyonce remains at the top of her game because she is a workoholic who never misses an oppurtunity to push her brand.Brandy had a long reign as a Pop Princess so why mention her she waa a tv and film star as well, I think her legal problems had more to do with her career stalling not being darker skinned.

  26. johnsmith March 14, 2010

i’m a fan i voted for her 8 timses on x f actor lol i don’t know 1 black, white orr asian person that likes alex most loved her on x factor but hate her now its really sad. they don’t mind her music but they could never watch her interviews . shes lucky america relys on radio airplay because they won’t like her personality. and of course i’m not jelous i want her to do great. JLs n cheryl cole r getting everything right. alex’s managements getting evrything wrong. how is she gonna last if she keeps dueting? and looking at brandys record sales shes nothing special shes a better actor.

  27. stacey March 14, 2010

Lauryn wasnt apreciated. where is she now? she had 1 amazing album 1 average albums . 1 huge single and 16 flops. if ur gonna compare alex to “another dark skin” women. whitneys the most successfull. but whitneys quite light skin

  28. Sam March 14, 2010

Just sit down Johnsmith you sound like a loon, what a stupid comment you dont know anyone who likes Alex, maybe it is because you obviously have no friends.Alex is a gracious, ladylike person with a bubbly personality maybe you are just weak and feel intimidated by someone who is confident.Cheryl Cole cannot sing how is her management getting anything right by canceling any oppurtunity for her to sing live, her career is based on smoke and mirrors not talent.JLS are a boyband with no competition and of course have cornered the t*** market-get a clue.Sean Paul,Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk, Akon, P-diddy, Mr Hudson, Drake have only had hits with featured artists why should Alex not do the same.Do not forget Beyonces debut where her two biggest hits were with Jay-z and Sean Paul.Brandy had aot of success stop throwing shade on her
she is ranked as one of the biggest selling female artists in America having sold 10 million albums in America and 25 million worldwide-only speak when you know what you are talking about johnsmith.

  29. Ben March 14, 2010

  30. Marie March 14, 2010

Surely if we are all fans of Alex we need to discuss her music. We already know that there are fans of other acts that troll onto all the Alex forums. We need to just ignore them and discuss the songs.I think both versions of All Night Long are great and I can see the remix version going to No 1 as it is not on the album.Pitbull also has a song with Akon being released in the UK so it will give the song a high profile. The UK Top 40 has alot of songs with acts teaming up why is the standard different for Alex. She is being groomed to be an International act and has to appeal to a wide rnage of people.Just be pleased that good acts want to work with her.I like Neyo, FloRida and Pitbull, it is funny that the same people who insult Alex about doing duets do not insult Mariah Carey, Kesha and Akon for doing the same thing.

  31. Phillip March 14, 2010

Calm down people, this is a music thread not politics, world hunger etc. Not a fan of Pitbull but he knows how to bring fire when needed. He sounds good on the song, does anyone know when it will be released. It is a shame that people just cant be happy for Alex and wish her all the best and further success.

  32. johnsmith March 14, 2010

brandy was huge last decade. shes had minor sucess this decade and what ever i’m just not getting my hopes up so i don’t get too dissapointed, shes dissapointed me enough . hallelujah don’t count either. most winners singles do good. ur knocking cheryl cole for miming. but didnt cheryl cole show up alex on the x factor by singing live!. alex is the only person to mime on x factor apart from britney but that was predictable. even leon sang live its just an opinion though. i have nothing to be threatened about, its the other artists in MUSIC that should feel threatened, but i doubt theyve even heard of alex neway. pitbull probably never even met alex. just like neyo didnt.

  33. Phillip March 14, 2010

Why is your own life so empty that you have to hate on Alex.Cheryl Cole blatently mimed on X-factor a 2 year old could see that.Alex sang live to a backing track, you are not only no fan you are pathetic.Alex is getting a good buzz and attention on American websites and blogs and will have a great career.Neyo and Alex have met so what if they recorded GNGM seperately what a poor excuse for a man you are.

  34. Marie March 14, 2010

Again we know that Alex has trolls who are just crazy, just ignore them.It seems to be a few people who are obsessed with her and are very stupid and ignorant.Mia/Toya,liyak, chelsie/Arsene Wenger/Lady Macbeth and now Johnsmith. It is very funny that they claim to hate her or like her and have no interest in her but follow everything she does.It is too sad when an adult behaves with so much spite and envy towards someone they dont know. All Night Long is a No 1 hit in the making that is all that matters.

  35. Tha Phoenix March 14, 2010

@Ben, I couldn’t agree with you more. I think people will really like her, she’s fun and has a great personality… And for a new artist she can perform far better than any other new artist ne I’ve seen in a while (with the exception, of course, of Lady Gaga)…

PLUS Jay Z and B have already said they’re going to do all they can to help her break the States, and once you have them on your side…

  36. Steve March 15, 2010

This song has it all vocally she sounds great, Pitbull does not overpower the song and sounds good, the beat is fresh. No 1 hit for Alexandra cant wait for this to be released.Alexandra is a beautiful girl haters get lost.

  37. Kyle March 15, 2010

The haters are going to hate regardless of what Alex does, it’s a shame they spend their free time trying to put others down but that’s nobodies fault than their own. Alex’s a very talented singer, dancer and a wonderful person, but for some people that’s not enough and it’s a shame they can’t get behind a home-grown talent the likes of which could compete on the international stage.

This song is awesome. I, like many other fans, was disappointed when I found out it’d be the next single rather than ‘The Silence’, but the remix sounds awesome. The tracks been cut down so it’s not too long, the instrumentals been polished to perfection and the inclusion of Pitbull makes the track more gender balanced and club friendly. This is going to be a big hit, nothing less than Alex deserves.

As for the chat about Alex’s looks, as a straight guy I find her very attractive. She’s got a great body and a decent face. She’s by no means perfect, but I don’t see that as a disadvantage. She’s not going to blend into the crowd because, unlike almost every other popstar, she’s not some brainless barbie. Provided she keeps her head screwed on tight she’s going to go far and be an internationally acclaimed artist.

I wish her the best of luck.

  38. Mark March 17, 2010

Great post Kyle, Alex has it all and deserves all her success. Her UK, IRELAND AND EUROPE SALES have been great.I think she needs to start doing small gigs up and down the country though because we have to start hearing that voice more. She is a beautiful person on the inside and out haters need to get a clue and leave her alone.I am so excited to watch her career go from strength to strength. It was hard not getting the Silence as the next track but All Night Long rules and will be No 1 for sure.

  39. Mike March 17, 2010

I just cannot get into Alexandra. She just seems so fake, IMO and seems like she’ll do whatever for success. I could see her cracking America but I’m not sure just how well she can. Leona cracked America because she had a HUGE single and HUGE promotion.

@ephriamv, Leona’s problem exists within her labels. Syco makes all decisions regarding Leona’s American singles despite the fact that J Records own her American contract. I Got You was supposed to be released here, they lined up promo for it and Simon’s crew went against it, wanting to see how it would do elsewhere before so they cancelled it and apparently won’t be releasing it.

Her “second” single is going to be announced and released soon and they’re also looking for new producers to work with her for her new album, which she has begun work on and should be released sometime after her European/Asian tour and before the US leg of her tour.

So it’s not necessarily that Leona got lost in the crowd, it’s just that she’s only released Happy from her current album and nothing else and Happy didn’t necessarily have hit written all over it, especially in today’s music market. She just hasn’t been given a chance by her label right now.

    Anyways…

  40. Phillip March 18, 2010

Mike considering you have never met Alex what a stupid comment, please tell us all he examples of Alex being fake.If she was desperate for success why is she not dating sports stars, popstars or falling out of night clubs half naked just to get press attention. Her career is very important to her and that is why she works so hard at it.I am not surprised you are so bitter seeing as you are a Leona fanboy.I suppose you do not have much to be Happy about.

  41. Tha Phoenix March 18, 2010

@ Mike, my friend met her during the X factor and apparently she’s the nicest person. She spent almost an hour outside in the cold speaking to my mate and her friends (back when barely anyone knew where the house was) and was apparently friendly, sweet and so down to earth.

I think people will really warm to her…

  42. Christian April 22, 2010

Just a little something a bud of mine “in the know” shared with me you all might find interesting…part of the “Bad Boys” delay in America was due to the surprising success of Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” song. Rihanna’s “return” had been counted out and dismissed, so in a calculated chess-like move, her song with similar subject matter was rushed ahead of Alex’s. Had to have been someone who knew it was to be her 1st single in the US and knew she’d arrive late Spring. Ironically, Alex’s hero Beyonce’s hubby, Jay Z, handles Rihanna. My bud said at his office (here in NYC) they were rooting for Alex and saw this as foul play. So Rihanna could not perform it “Idol” even though IT’S NUMBER #1, and Simon and Co. are simply waiting for “Rude Boy” to lose it’s steam. And the hair change was because test markets and A & R research done on Alex showed that many thought she looked like Keri Hilson, so an overhaul was needed to make her not be so “common”. Lastly, she is more than likely to be launched on “Idol Gives Back” as Simon’s new finding.
