The music world came to a standstill last night, as Lady GaGa‘s eagerly awaited video for ‘Telephone’ premièred. Many however, regardless of their take on the clip, were somewhat baffled as to the it’s narrative. To shed some light on the matter, the 23 year old superstar explained the premise behind the Beyonce assisted video to E! News. Check out what she had to say below:

If anyone is wondering what this video is about. In Paparazzi, She gets revenge for her boyfriend throwing her off the ledge by killing him and she goes to jail. In this video, she helps Beyonce kill her abusive boyfriend. They kill everyone in the dinner to make it seem like the food killed everyone and they escape.

I don’t really get why some of you are having such a hard time understanding the meaning behind it. It seems very self explanatory people. Beyonce bails Gaga out of jail, and Gaga helps Beyonce kill her ass slapping abusive boyfriend played by Tyrese. Gaga a*** her in killing him but ends up killing the whole dinner while she was at it. They both set of riding into the sunset like a modern day Bonnie and Clyde or Laverne and Shirley. It’s really not that hard folks. Watch the damn thing again.
Besides the blatant tacky advertisements, The video was really creative. Gaga has got to be praised for her vision. While all the other artists including her Honey Bey are making recession specials, Gaga is making classic Pop art videos for her time. Her videos will all go down as one of the best. And will looked at as Pop classics.

i think the video is too busy. too much of everything. there were scenes that could be left out. the leopard leotard for example. it doesn’t fit. the director got lost in it. still, better than most of the recent videos. but to say the music world was in a standstill! LMAO! i was sleeping

All idiots ! the idea behind the video & the song is the fear of suffocation (every song of Lady GaGa ‘Fame Monster’ represents one fear), in the lyrics you can get that she’s feeling oppressed by her boyfriend who calls her all the time, the Telephone is like a prison and she’d rather stay on the dancefloor & dance (=freedom), that’s for the song, the video it is the same : you have the jail to confirm the whole idea, but the fear is represented by the constant presence of the media (Diet Coke hair style, cigarettes on the glasses, Poison TV, sandwich & fast food junk in the P**** Wagon, Virgin mobile, Polaroid …), at the end everybody dies because of that, and then you see Gaga & Bee dancing in American Flag clothes => that represents the US not caring (=so dancing and pretending that nobody dies) about the fact that the society ‘can’t breathe’ under that daily media pressure, it’s all about ‘BUY EAT BUY EAT AND DIE’, I might have gone too far but HEY that’s what I got from Telephone.

The concept isnt exactly hard to understand:
Well the gist of the video is she is in prison, I am assuming from where “Paparazzi” ends. Her lover (Beyonce) bails her out and they plot to kill her boyfriend (Tyrese). Gaga suggests they kill everyone (“Once you kill the cow you have to make a burger”) but asks Beyonce if she is sure. She says yes (“Broken mirror….blah,blah,blah”), so they poison everybody and runs off to be together and “never come back”. & the concept of the Song is being to busy to give a certain someone any satisfaction.
See Gaga killed her boyfriend in “Paparazzi” and Gaga helps her “HoneyBee” kill hers so they can be together forever.

WTF? Did any of you actually watch the clip in this post that was suppose to explain the video?! The whole busting out of jail and killing an abusive BF was the obvious explanation that no one had any trouble understanding… In the clip where Gaga explains it, she says that she wanted to take make a commentary on the idea that “America is full of young people that are inundated with information and technology and turn it into something that was more of a commentary on the kind of country that we are”. That was what Gaga claims the video was about… Did any of you get that out of this silly video?

This video is all about society and pop culture. Look deeper love muffins. Gaga is making you analyze stereotypes in our society…gender identity, women, gay rights, and etc. Tyrese did a tour last year that only allowed women to come excluding his gay fanbase…thats the symbolism behind his being in it. Gaga and Beyonce are taking back women’s ability to own their sexuality and not be told what they have to do with it. The killing people is symbolic of killing the mentalities of our culture and what we think and perceive to be gender and sexual norms and etc….AND It is a dedication to the King of Pop…both these ladies are at the top of the industry no matter what people at thatgrapejuice say…not just GAGA but BEYONCE too. They both have subtle moments of MJ movement qualities…LOOK DEEPER LOVEMUFFINS…BEFORE YOU JUDGE.

I don’t understand why for some people it is so hard to understand this video and its concept. I also do not understand the uproar about product placement. Surely there is some of that, also was in her previous video for “Bad Romance” and in numerous other music videos around. The advertising however does not run the show – and more likely it allowed Gaga and Beyonce to do a short movie type video rather than just a typical length music video. I would say it’s good thinking and I would do the same if I was them. As long as there is content and depth and a good concept, artistry always wins. Bravo Gaga and Beyonce, “Telephone” is an amazing video with so many references to pop culture, movies, gender identity, addiction, etc. It’s a very unique package of information if one chooses to see it. I find it silly that people go on complaining on sites that the video does not take place in a club and why is this cos she sings about her heart being on the dancefloor. Yup, that would have made a really interesting video, eh? Not. What I love about Gaga is that she is like modern day surrealist. She combines things in a very interesting way and gives new meaning to things and topics. She’s a true artist who isn’t just after fame but wants to add value to her body of work by inserting deep concepts and thoughts. That’s admirable in a world were so many people go on living lives as shallow fame addicts who do the expected rather than the unexpected.
This is a perfect example of the dumbing of America. Everyone is ragging on her for the product placements and violence. First, is it really that much more violent than many other videos out there talking about cop killers, gang killings, etc? Come on.
Now..as far as the meaning and product placements. Hello! The whole point of the song is talking about “OBSESSION.” Someone keeps calling, especially in our modern day of constantly being reachable, by text, phone, etc. We’re also inundated with products everywhere. Commercials, ads, etc. I can’t even watch a video on Youtube without first having to watch an ad. We’ve become obsessed, as a nation, with products (ie consumerism, aka capitalism). I mean, she and B are even wearing Americana clothes in the last dance after the cafe ‘murders.’
I think the whole thing is a fun, campy, kitcshy commentary on our modern capitalist society…AND I LOVE IT!

I can’t believe no one can go beyond the shallow meaning of her video (the boyfriend killing and such)! Well, in the diner scene, when everyone dressed in American-themed outfits is parading around dancing, the peoplle surrounding them are dead. Implying that the government is slowly killing us and just going on their merry way like nothings happening. Also, notice how she covers her left eye when she serves the poison…. the right eye is symbolic for good and the left is symbolic for evil. Since she’s covering her left eye and has only the right visible, she’s also implying that the government is putting on a facade, making themselves seem like the good guys, and once they gain your trust, they’ll destroy you. (Tyrese trusts that the food is not tainted, but it is, and he dies)
