In a recent blog post on VIBE.com, Island Def Jam A&R worker Bu Thiam has stated that Rihanna’s upcoming release is set to be on the same level as Michael Jackson’s iconic ‘Thriller’ album. Rihanna is coming along incredibly. I’m trying to push her to where every song will be a hit from 1 to 12. I’m talking about NO album fillers. Our bar for this album is Michael Jackson’s Thriller. We got smashes from Stargate, Ester Dean, Mel & Mus and Rock City. We’re definitely going in with Ne-Yo, The-Dream and other writers and producers that have always been a part of her creative process since day one. She’s great to work with and very hands on with every song that’s being written and produced. She has visual concepts for just about every song. I don’t think he was trying to convey that they are trying to MATCH “Thriller” but that their aim is “Thriller” as in “Thriller” is the album of all albums, so any artist would reach for the most successful album of ALL TIME!
However, I don’t think that they should be hyping the album like they’re doing. Although I think the album will be a banger, I NEVER think it’s a good idea to go to the extreme when talking about an upcoming album. It’s just an all around terrible strategy. I mean they hyped the s*** outta “Rated R,” including the stans, but it the sales were/are VERY lackluster. Don’t get me wrong, I loved “Rated R” That s*** was FIYAH and one of my favs of 2009, but if people would have calmed down prior to the release (stans), then 2.5 million so far wouldn’t be so bad.

OOOSHII: He wasn’t ‘banned’ in the UK. He was just in the UK earlier this year for Fashion week! His WORK VISA was denied. A lot of entertainers who have felonies on their record get denied intitially and have to reapply. Which is what he is doing. The tour was post poned, not canceled.

Most of the music that are on mixtapes is better than the ish they play on the radio now a days.Chris is smart, he is keeping his fans pleased by constantly releasing music. Mixtapes are a great way to keep your music out their and build your fan base. ‘In My Zone’ was downloaded more than 2 mil times, and ‘Fan of a Fan’ is at half a mill. He first mixtape was in 2007, so it’s obvious it’s reaching an audience. Besides, his first mixtape was in 2007 so it’s not like he is only doing mixtapes now.
Drake made a name for himself with his mixtapes, and he is now the hottest rapper in the game right now. So I don’t understand why people wanna diss mixtape artist or artist who make them, it’s an easy way to expand your fanbase.

No doubt Rihanna should aspire to greatness (though to be honest, I’m not expecting much from her).
But if indeed she surpasses Michael Jackson in record sales and/or awards, it’s a sign that our standards, the public’s’ standards, have dropped so low that someone with close-to-zilch talent can even sell and win as many awards as a legend —- and not just any legend, the greatest entertainer of the century (that’s not debatable).
I stopped watching all award shows because they’re really just popularity contests at this point. No one is judging the ART, the message in their work, the intent of their work, the craftsmanship, the ingenuity. Instead, they focus on the numbers and the dollar signs $$$. Quantity does not trump Quality. Rihanna may have quantity, but the quality of her art and the quality of her ability is low-grade.
For her sake, I hope this isn’t just hype and that she’s actually trying to cultivate whatever artistic potential she has in her.

I think they are talking about the ALBUM, not the SONG. And although Michael didn’t write all his songs, he still wrote a fair amount and had creative control over his music, something that cannot be said for Rihanna.
And comparing Rihanna’s upcoming album to Thriller is stupid, no matter how they meant it. Even if it turns out to be her most successful album in her career, it will NEVER match Thriller in either commercial or critical success. That’s not even an opinion, that is a FACT. You don’t have to be an MJ fan to realize how ludicrous it is to expect Rihanna to touch a bar that has been set so ridiculously high and hasn’t even been touched by pop stars that are ten times more talented and successful than she is. Michael himself never topped Thriller, so what makes Rihanna’s handlers think she can? I think she has chops, but the music industry is totally different than it was during Thriller. For one thing it was a time of record stores and you had to be a serious hacker to download so an artist made more money, reported more sales. Secondly peoples attention span for anything was longer than it is not. Having said all that I wish her and anyone who can truly sing and is willingly to work at it the best of luck. There can be another song which may reach the heights of Thriller, but there will only be one Thriller.
