Last night we previewed the Glee cast’s take on Whitney Houston‘s 2009 smash ‘I Look To You’. The full version of the hit TV show’s spin on the song, fronted by Amber Riley (‘Mercedes’) has surfaced. It’s set to air on TV this coming Tuesday.

Amber nailed it! Though interestingly, the grit of Whitney’s ‘new voice’ armours the original with an authenticity and conviction which this markedly more Pop sounding take can’t compete with. Still, a great, great effort.
Folks, don’t sleep on these Glee covers. They oft can sound on-par / better than the originals (see: Madonna’s ‘4 Minutes‘).

now Amber has a nice voice and did a good job. im just mad they took all the Soul out of the song and made it very Pop! Still good tho.

She’s got a big voice but she sounds a bit like she sings out of her nose sometimes. Whitney’s version is just about 1000x deeper.

Where ‘s the soul? where are the gospel flourishes that are signature Whtiney? where is the authenticity? when whitney sings, ‘I didn’t know if I was gon make it, now I LIFT my head’ you feel her and know that she is singing from a deep place.
Mercedes is just belting out notes with no feeling or passing.
No denying this girl can sing but she leaves me cold. Whitney’s live and recorded version should not be touched.

She NEEDS a record deal. Her voice is so pure and soulful. No she doesn’t have the experience that Whitney has but the girl has an incredible voice! RANGE for YEARS.

Clearly Amber can sing! If you listen to her versions in the show of bust my windows, hate on me and the boy is mine she does the songs justice, when she sang a snip of MJ on Jonathan ross she showed she could sing.
Now, She isn’t whitney! Its hard to sing whitney because a big part is tone and Amber doesnt have the same tone, but this doesnt mean she cant sing.
Charine can sing but for me her voice is generic and she sings by numbers. I like to hear a voice that without the glitzy videos you know who’s singing, that you can hear a ad lib, run that is unique to the singer and not some one that can sing the song exactly as you hear it

Amber Riley is too often sidelined in Glee it is starting to get really annoying how the black cast and black singers are not given due respect on that show.Where is the Whitney, Aretha, Beyonce and Michael Jackson episode.I hope that director gets real as Black music is the heartbeat of all music.
I think they were just surpressing Amber’s voice out of respect for Whitey. I actually am a HUGE fan of GLEE and has watched her SANG! songs like “Bust the windows” and “Beautiful” with the Heart & Soul that seems to be missing from this serving.
