Mariah Carey released her new Holiday collection, ‘Merry Christmas II You’, today. The record, which serves as the long-awaited followup to the diva’s first seasonal album, ‘Merry Christmas’, includes covers of several classics as well as four new songs.
Vocally astounding and musically profound, this record features a true return to form for Carey who unleashes her unmatched voice on songs such as ‘The First Noel’ and ‘Christmas Time Is In The Air Again’. Furthermore, her Opera-singing mother even makes an appearance on ‘O Come All ye Faithful’/’Hallelujah Chorus’.

Yes, I have already bought my copy. After listening to it, it doesn’t so much serve as a sequal to the first MC (1994), but more of continuation and a re-affirming of her place in the industry, her peers, fans and critics musically and vocally.
Many people will say “Ohh she’s whisperin on all the songs and can’t sing” but those people are the ones that listen to first 30 seconds, form an opinion and keep moving. Mariah is SANGING on this album more so than the last 5 years! On “When Christmas Comes” her vocals are FULL and very “Stay The Night”, and lyrically content was written ll by her. “Christmas Time Is In The Air Again” her voice is understated yet still is Mariah with the full yet airy falsetto, melisma and vocal delivery. The belted note she sustains clearly at the end is all the more appreciated. “O Come All Ye Faithful” has her just belting it out with her mom and they really take it to Church! “One Child” shows Mariah’s somewriting ability, the song sounds like an old stardard. “Charlie Brown Christmas” is a great slice of everyone’s childhood.
Born Is The King should have been a full track. Its knocks very HARD, some say too hard (sensual) but I don’t mind..it has a STRONG Butterfly vibe, and that melody is insane…plus its a welcome suprise!
The music is mature, lush, and CLASSIC!
Only thing I can find wrong (and its hard) are the two songs she’s alread done. The O Holy Night version is from 2000 and seem kinda pointless and done already. Plus it shows the slight difference in her singing style, but it is good to have it on CD. All I Want For Christmas was nice, but it was almost IDENTICAL to the original one with a HARDER bass line and a few extra ad libs thown in for good measure.

Sleeper you are DELUSIONAL if you think Whitney is better than Mariah nowadays. If I recall correctly (which, SPOILER ALERT: I am), people in Europe walked out on Whitney’s concert in massive numbers. Mariah can still sing. Just YouTube any 2010 concert performance by Whitney. It’s sad and shameful.
But this isn’t about Whitney vs. Mariah – just about Mariah being the queen of Christmas. This album is phenomenal!

She sounded very exhausted on this CD.
Many of the songs, one can clearly hear her voice changing (not speaking of high notes). The first Noel, I think is the main song her voice starts off heavy as if she had a cold and half way though it, sounds like the song was completed when her cold had ended. It gets really beautiful at the end. Same with the song that features some vocals by her mom. When her voice is rested and not congested by weight issues & partying; it can be extremely beautiful. This Xmas CD is filled mostly with very slow (boring) songs that almost sounds as if they were originally written years ago as just regular slow songs with a few minor changes to add the words “Jesus Christ; Christmas; Holiday; etc. The few cover songs she does are …

She should not have done another x mas album. WORST DECISION OF THE DECADE. She sounds weak, bored, uninspired on her new CD.
