It looks like Mariah Carey will have the last laugh this Christmas. The diva’s new Holiday collection, ‘Merry Christmas II You’, has been experiencing increasing sales in the last 3 weeks and has rebounded to #14 with a 43% growth on the album charts. In fact, the record has sold over 60k copies this week, outselling the 56k that it sold when it debuted on the tally.
To date, ‘Merry Christmas II You’ has sold over 226k despite Carey only doing one live televised performance to promote the project. However, this recent success may be attributed to the record-breaking success of her ‘Oh Santa’ single which ascended to the #1 spot on the Adult Contemporary chart after only 2 weeks; the fastest rise of any song to top of that tally in history.
Things aren’t looking so ‘merry’ for Ne-Yo, though. After getting off to a surprisingly strong start on last week’s tally, the singer’s ‘Libra Scale’ LP has plummeted from #8 to #39, selling only a meager 29,209 copies (a 75% decrease from its initial 117k units sold).
Kanye West and Nicki Minaj also experienced a 2nd week slump was they both sold 106,003 (down 80%) and 102,395 (down 72%) copies respectively this week . Moreover, Rihanna’s ‘Loud’ barely hung onto the #10 position as it sold less than 70k units at retail outlets, bringing its total to an underwhelming 418k to date.
New albums on the lineup this week include Jazmine Sullivan’s ‘Love Me Back’ which enters at #15 with 57,325 sold and Chrisette Michele’s ‘Let Freedom Reign’ at the #24 spot with 43,874 in sales. Of course. Finally, the Black Eyed Peas ‘The Beginning’ had a disappointing debut with 117,066 copies sold, position it at #6.

It seems as if the industry has become more about competing for the top spot rather than delivering substantial music. Top Billboard positions don’t necessarily dictate that your career is over, it only explains the popularity of that artist and how much airplay they receive. Many artist go on to release material and have a fair amount of airplay. Look at Pink for example, she just garnered her third number 1 hit and has been out for the past 11 years! It’s about the formula the artist creates and how they choose to promote their project. The music industry has become a fickle battlefield…That’s why things have become so complicated for most artist these days, because they feel like if they don’t reach the #1 spot, then it’s over. As an individual artist , there are many entertainment outlets to expose your talents to a different and sometimes, wider audience. You just have to think outside the box, sometimes and be ready to put in hard work. 🙂

Ok, so completely exaggerated Mariah’s “success.” That is not that great, honey. Yes, I love me some Mariah and I love the album; if anyone can do an ENTIRE Christmas album, it’s MARIAH. However, the success of this album is just a smidgen away from being labeled as a FLOP, because Black Friday has already passed and her sales haven’t skyrocketed as you CLAIMED they would and Christmas is only a mere 20 days away. Sorry.
I’m not really shocked by Ne-yo LACK OF success. And although I do like his album, it’s just not up to par with his previous albums.
I actually think Rihanna is doing rather well, but still not good enough. Not to mention, it’s a WHOLE lot lower than her stans’ predictions. I wouldn’t call it a FLOP, but it damn sure is LACKLUSTER!
Kanye’s slump was a bit more than I expected. I knew it would fall but not as much as it did. I just think people aren’t really feeling his new album. I like it, because I’m a hardcore Kanye fan, but this album isn’t his best.

Look at at when MC first released Merry Christmas and the album sales i think it was somewhere around 45k i think look at it today CERTIFIED 5xplatinum after what like 15 or 16 years. All i want for christmas peaked at 83 on the charts and that was YEARS after the album came out. people educate yourselfs before you speak. Lol

And Amazing.Lee is right about critics, their opinions are no more important or special than yours and mine. The only difference is that they get paid to publish their opinions. Sometimes though if you follow a particular critic or blog and their tastes/line of thinking is the same as yours, their opinion can be helpful, but overall you’re not gonna decide to buy/not buy an album because a critic says it’s good or bad. When it comes to art, quality can’t be proven. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure and vice-versa. There are some albums that are critically acclaimed that I personally find highly overrated and some that are way underrated to me.
And very few critics know how to properly review music. Most of them are either overly biased or they just don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.

mariahs album is doing exactly what they wanted it to. shes not super hot, so shes not gonna pull susan boyle #’s, but shes selling consistently high. the fact that she sold 60k in its 4th/5th week and Kanye sold 100 in ints 2nd MUST tell you something… that shes put out a solid album.

Mariah has a full, amazing, selling album. She can promote this and her other Xmas album for another 20yrs if she wanted to…Oh yes, Slay Mariah.

To me Mrs.Carey kilt this album. This album is classic, her album is stellar. Think of it this way she has sold more than artists that are debuting on the charts now, her album has been out for about 5 wks, this one 15 yrs. later has outsold her first one in it’s first week out. She has had the number1 & number2 Holidays singles, she’s broken records on the AC radio format in a matter of two short wks. She went from 12 to 1. That is huge. The woman is a force to be reckoned with period, oh and look for her sales to keep on increasing. Susan’s album isn’t a Christmas album, and Jackie is coming off huge exposure & a huge television show. They cater to middle America. Mariahs sales are fantastic, and is selling extremely well. The album is great.
Also, look at this way Rihanna has had two huge singles & she’s sold 67k her 3rd wk, Mariah who has a concept Christmas album has sold 60k, almost about the same as Rihanna so that says alot. The woman is a megastar, and has been doing her damn thing since she’s hit the scene, i’m glad Trent made a big deal about it, because he should have, notice that the haters had to compare Mariahs album to two of the top selling ones which aren’t Christmas albums, she’s genius.

Not to mention Christmas albums comes back every year on charts and sales continue to go higher! Oh Santa! has gotten to number one already on US Adult contemporary and Holiday Charts! It’s number 18 on Bubbling Hot 100 and I’m pretty sure it’ll crack in the Hot 100 next week! The music video for Oh Santa! has been successful to topping charts in the UK! In Asia, the album is experiencing success too, most notably in Malaysia, Korea, and the Philippines! I hope sales in Japan picks up as the holidays gets closer!
