ABC aired Mariah Carey’s ‘Merry Christmas To You’ Christmas special last evening. The icon thrilled viewers with an extensive setlist of Holiday tunes from both her Christmas albums, ‘Merry Christmas’ and ‘Merry Christmas II You’.

This show was definitely a spectacle. However, the giant elephant in the room was the amount of dubbing done to some of Carey’s vocals. She was clearly singing live for most of the show but, in some cases, the post-production editing was far too obvious.
In fact, the dubbing made it difficult to tell whether Carey was singing live at some points, especially when mixed with her overly dramatic facial expressions (see the end of ‘O Come All Ye Faithful’). Still, on most occasions, there was no doubt that Carey was giving her all and displayed the full glory of her voice, particularly on ‘Oh Holy Night’.
All in all, it was a truly enjoyable show and proved why Carey remains the best singer in the game today. Next time, though, she should give Beyonce’s people a call so that they can assist with the post-production dubbing.

90% of that boring show was lipped. You would think after 20 years, 18#1 hits etc, Mariah would have learned some performance skills at least. She has no stage presence and she lipped mostly all of it. Can’t be the best when you are fake

For the most part Mariah was singing but by it being edited for tv it looked different. Charlie Brown, Oh Santa, When Christmas Comes, Oh Come Oh Ye Faithful were all live from what i could tell. Anyway its good to see Mariah Happy and enjoying her ALREADY legendary career

I don’t ever want Trent to come for Whitney or any true singer who goes live. No shade against Mariah but Trent makes it hard for her with his biased overhyping. The lipping was too much and you know it.
Mariah has to work on that, with 20yrs in the business, she should not be doing that much lipping and she wasn’t dancing so no excuse.
So sad i can only say these worlds about a fallen star. None of these songs was live. I can’t wait for this era ends. Mariah needs to take care of your live out of the spolights for a moment.

I think the only song that was clearly dubbed was When Christmas comes, the rest of the songs -including the duet w/ her mom- were live. You can hear her breathing and she was even a bit off at times on o holy night. She really sang her ass off during the special, I truly enjoyed it!

The only song Beyonce pre-records is “Get Me Bodied” except for the I Am.. Tour version. You can tell that was live Because she sings it a tad bit slower and in a different Key. But the one at the BET AWARDS and THE BEYONCE EXPERIENCE was pre recorded.
And when Beyonce is not going to sing live she usually doesn’t have a mic in her hand she takes it away from her mouth instead of mimicking.

Anybody who actually saw her live knows that she was SINGING LIVE and in FULL EFFECT.
The only songs she didn’t sing live were Video Phone and Baby Boy and she wasn’t even holding a mic through those performance.

It was a fun show….lots of personality but I agree with Trent….the post production editing was amateur…..its something thats done on all tv specials FOR EVERY ARTIST. But again Trent is right in saying that Beyonce’s people do it best!!!
Celine’s people back in the day did amazing jobs too but I just think this might have been a lil rushed. But she was in fact singing live for most of the show. Yeah she lipped some high notes but I kinda don’t mind especially for a tv special.

y’all say she was lipping? the only one that they should have just skipped because of the lipping was When Christmas Comes (whcih is probably the hardest vocal to pull off!), which ANY vocalist would need if your singing that strongly throughout a whole concert. I think parts of Oh Holy Night were lipped as well.
fact remains, Mariah killed these vocals, as she always has and always does. Only era she fell flat was E=MC2 because she was so thin and was going through a miscarriage/family planning that it all stressed her out.
Beyonce is good, but no one should deny that she lips just like everyone else. Her post-promo team is the best and covers it up.

Finally nice to hear Mariah singing some new songs instead of the usual Hero, Always Be My Baby, We Belong Together…….. I agree that some parts she was lip syncing but definteley not 90% like some of you ignorant people are stating. Mariah has come light years ahead of the major 3 divas, herself, Celine and Whitney and she should be proud that she’s still relevant in today’s industry of young female singers! This woman was born to make music and born to be a star 🙂

You can tell she was singing live just like you said you can hear her breathing & she did kinda mess up on one of the songs & it wasn’t hard to tell. Even though I haven’t been feeling Mariah since “The Constipation of Moo Moo” I can say one thing she got me this time around with this Christmas special those whistle fast runs was off the hook. First: I love Mariah. Always have, always will. But the majority of last night’s show was dubbed/lip synched. It was obvious. This has been her style for a while too.

Well I for one was at the taping of the show and it was recorded live……..as far as lipping. Every single artist at one time or another has lipped! It is impossible for them to sing live

It was painfully clear that Mariah wasn’t singing live! She has the stage presence of a tree. I honestly like alot of Mariah’s music, but watching her bring the songs to life is always disappointing. I was bored out of my mind, throughout all of the show. She’s just a dull gal! Whitney, Celine, Christina and Jennifer Hudson (who I don’t particularly care for) have so much more energy and natural carisma on stage. I haven’t seen Whitney lip sync – ever, in my entire life. If she has I’m certain that it wasn’t through an entire show. Mariah was a huge stiff mountain that didn’t move at all. She should be singing live. Ok since my Queen was lipping so badly then tell me if there is any sing that can’t out sing Mariah in this era point out 1 . Coz last time I check they use mc 4 all the high notes in the song stand up for cancer. And come to think off it , beyonce was there with many more of todays strong vocals. And mariah was the only vocalist their from 90’s. The thing is she can cope with all of them old schools and new schools. But the question is can they cope with her or reach the highest note as she does ? Nope. Not in a fucken million years
